シチリア１０日目、シラクーサで過ごした１週間の土曜日は、ノートという街の近郊にあるワイナリーの予約を入れていたので、早めに出てワイナリーの前にノートの街に行くことにしました。シラクーサ近郊には見所がたくさんあって、是非行きたいと思っていた街もたくさんあったので、この方法が一番効率良い方法でした。
On the 10th day in Sicily, which was a Saturday, we had a booking of a winery visit at 11.30 so we visited Noto before then. As I’ve written many times, there are so many places people say “you must visit” around Syracuse, this was the most efficient way of using our time.
ノートもやはりラグーサやモディカ同様１６９３年の大地震の大打撃を受けたところで、崩壊してしまった街を捨ててそこから南１０キロほどのところにある高台に新しい街が作られたそうです。後期バロック様式の建物が並ぶ、ここもやはりユネスコ世界遺産。
Noto was also destroyed by the major earthquake in 1693 like Ragusa and Modica and they built new town on top of a hill about 10km south from the old destroyed town. This is also a master piece of Sicilian Baroque and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
借りていたヴィラからは１時間弱のところにあります。街が見えてきました。
車を停めて、カテドラルまで歩きます。
２０年前の１９９６年にクーポラが壊れたため（１９９０年の地震で構造が弱っていたためと感が得られています）何年もかけて修復され、２００７年に修復工事が終わってきれいになっています。
The cathedral dome collapsed in 1996 as a result of unremedied structural weakening caused by an earthquake in 1990. It has since been rebuilt and was reopened in 2007.
カテドラルの向かいにあるのは、ドゥチェツィ館で市役所の建物。The building in front of the Cathedral is Town Hall.
借りていたヴィラのオーナーさんもオススメで、どのガイドブックにも必ず載っている、シチリア菓子やグラニータ、ジェラートなどが美味しいと評判の「カフェ・シチリア」。外席は満席だったので、中の席でさくっとアイスカッサータとカノーロを夫とシェアー。本当は色々お菓子を買ってみたかったのですが混んでいましたし、日持ちもしないかもしれないと泣く泣く諦めました。
This is the famous “Caffe Sicilia”, which is recommended by the owners of the villa we rented and is probably in every guidebook about Sicily. Their sweets (cookies, pastries, granita, gelato etc) ate supposed to be the best. I would have loved to buy some of them but it was quite busy and I find it overwhelming looking at all the selections of the sweets so we didn’t. We did have Ice Cassata and Canolo to share with my husband in the cafe inside, as the outside seats were all occupied.
美しい街と評判のノート、華やかな印象を受けました。駐車場を探すのに時間がかかってしまい、ワイナリーに向かう時間が迫ってしまったのであまりゆっくり出来ず残念でした。次回はゆっくりと訪れてみたいと思う街でした。
I’ve read a lot of praise of Noto and it was a very beautiful and elegant looking town. Unfortunately it took us a while to find a parking spot and we had an appointment with a winery later in the morning, so we weren’t able to spend a lot of time there. I’d love to spend more time next time when we have a chance to visit.
