今日は、高島屋にある「マ・メゾン」でアメリカ人のお友達とランチをご一緒しました。前回ご一緒したのは多分クリスマス休暇に出られる前だったので、半年ぶりになると思います。ご旅行が多く、会わなかった間にアメリカ、ベトナム、アブダビ、インドにご旅行されました。いつもお忙しそう。

I had lunch with an American friend in “Ma Maison” in Takashimaya.  The last time when we got together, it was before she went off to the US for her Christmas holidays, so it’s probably been 6months since I saw her last.  During those 6  months, she travelled to the US, Vietnam, Abu Dhabi and India.

「マ・メゾン」は元々名古屋発祥なのですね。日本に住んでいた頃は聞いたことがなかったので、全国的に広がったのは比較的最近なのでしょうか？シンガポールには随分前からあったようですが、少し前にできた高島屋のビルの中の店舗に行ってきました。わたしは一度だけマンダリンギャラリーのマ・メゾンのとんかつのお店に入ったことがありますが、その時食べたトンカツはお肉がすごく薄くてほとんど衣で美味しくなく、また行こうとは思わなかったのですが、こちらのお店はメニューも豊富ですし一人でランチもよくされるようなので、と便利かと思い、「すごく美味しいということではなくてアメリカのダイナーレベルだけど」と提案してみました。

I wasn’t familiar with Ma Maison but it is from Nagoya, Japan, originally.  I guess it’s spread all over Japan relatively recently.  I think they’ve been in Singapore for quite a while but the one in Takashimaya is relatively new.  I have eaten in their Tonkatsu restaurant in Mandarin Gallery, but I wasn’t impressed.  The tonkatsu I had was very thin with lots of coating and quite tough.  I prefer Tonkichi’s fillet cutlet.  Anyway, I thought this might be a useful place to know for my friend because she seems to have lunch alone sometimes and this restaurant has a lot of items on their menu.  It’s not known for fabulous food, it’s more like “Diners” in the US, somewhere you can take your children or go alone for a quick lunch or dinner.

普通のビーフカレーが食べたかったのですがなかったので、トンカツカレーセットにしました。お友達も同じ。

I wanted to have normal beef curry but they didn’t have it so decided to have Katsu Curry (curry with tonkatsu).  My friend had the same.  We had the set lunch so it came with corn soup, a salad and tea/coffee or ice cream.

カツカレー。

 

 

トンカツ部分は以前マンダリンギャラリーで食べたものより美味しかったです。（でも、わたしはヒレカツの方が好きなので、とん吉の方が好みですが。）カレーはもっと甘みも辛味もあるカレーが好きですね。ここのカレーは比較的塩分強めで甘みはほとんど感じられず、あまり辛くもなかったです。でも、まぁ、ファミレスの食事と思えば普通に美味しくいただけました。外から見ると安っぽく見えましたが、中の雰囲気は思っていたより良かったです。

Tonkatsu was better than what I had in Manderin Gallery’s branch – but I still prefer the Fillet one in Tonkichi as tonakatsu.  Curry was on a salty side and didn’t taste very sweet or spicy.  Typical Japanese curry in general tastes sweet and spicy at the same time.  It was OK as a Diner’s curry.  Interior was nicer than I expected from the outside of the restaurant, which I personally think looks very cheap.

他に、コーヒーか紅茶かアイスクリームがつきます。わたしはアイスティーを、お友達はアイスクリーム（チョコレート）を選びました。お友達は、アイスクリームは全部入らないのでシェアーしないかと聞いてくださったので、「大丈夫、日本のランチセットに出てくるアイスクリームは大抵すごく少しだから。」とお伝えしていたのですが、実物が出てきたところ「ほんと、少しね、良かった！」とおっしゃっていました（笑）。初めてアメリカ人のお友達のお家に食事にお招きいただいて、食後のデザートに日本人が思う大きさの２倍くらいのスクープが３つも出て来てびっくりしたことがありましたが、アメリカではなんでも量が多いですものね。アイスクリームも、美味しいとおっしゃっていました。お会計は、多分、１人２０ドルちょっとだったと思います。

So, this lunch set included tea or coffee or ice cream.  I chose ice tea but my friend doesn’t drink tea or coffeee.  She asked me if I would share her ice cream but I told her she didn’t need to worry, it was going to be a very small portion – and it was.  In Japan, usually, if it’s a part of a set, ice cream comes just as 1 very small scoop.  I remember when my husband and I were invited by our American friend at the time, they gave us ice cream as a dessert – 3 huuuuge scoops of it.  The portions of everything are huge in the US comparing to Japan.  Anyway, my friend said her ice cream (it was chocolate ice cream) was delicious.  I cannot remember exactly how much but I think the bill was a little more than S$20 per person.

美味しいものが好きな方なので、いつもどのレストランが美味しかったという話題になるのですが、シンガポールのレストランは高いのにがっかりすることが多いとおっしゃっていました。本当に、そう思います。最初からがっかりしたり、１度目は美味しかったのに２度目でがっかりしたり。。。いつ行っても何を食べても美味しい、というところはほとんど思いつきません。そんな中でどこが良かったか情報交換したり、旅行の話をお聞きしたり、キャッチアップすることが多すぎてあっという間に２時間。

This friend loves good food so we often talk about the restaurants we’d been to when we get together.  She told me she is often disappointed by the restaurants here and I totally agree.  I cannot think of many (if any) restaurants where I feel whatever you order and whenever you go it’s always delicious.   2 hours went quickly while we exchanged our information of restaurants, talked about our holidays we’ve had and we are going to have.  So much to catch up!

わたしが旅行から戻るのと入れ違いにご旅行に出られるので、次回お目にかかれるのは８月か９月か。そうこうしているうちに、またあっという間に１年が過ぎてしまいます。

Just before I come back from our holiday, she will be leaving for her holiday in the US, so I guess it’ll be August or September when we get together next.  A year flies so fast…
