書き忘れていたことがあり、少し遡ります。フォートウィリアムでも２泊したので、到着した翌日はドライブに出かけました。この日も朝のうちは曇っていましたが、後半はお天気が良くなって暑いくらいになりました。

I forgot to write about the day after we arrived in Fort William.  As we stayed there 2 nights, we went out for a drive on our 2nd day.  It started with very grey sky but then it turned out to be a hot and beautiful day.

行き先は、フォートウィリアムから１時間半くらいのところにあるネス湖。スコットランドってどんなところですか？とおっしゃる方がとても多くてほとんどスコットランドのことをご存じない方が多いのに驚きましたが、そんな方でもネス湖はネッシーでご存じではと思います。２０年前にも行きました。湖の側の山はとてもなだらかで高くないですし、お天気があまり良くなかったせいもあるのでしょうが暗いイメージで、すごく美しい景色ということもないかな。

We drive to Loch Ness, which was about an hour and a half’s drive from Fort William.  We were there when we had a holiday in Scotland 20 years ago but wanted to visit again.  Many of my friends asked me what sort of a place Scotland was and had no idea, which surprised me, but I’m sure even they’ve heard of Loch Ness.  I cannot say it’s a beautiful place to be honest.  Maybe because the weather wasn’t good when we were there but it seems like just a very dark lake with very low mountains (or hills).

途中で寄った、the Commando Memorial、第二次世界大戦で亡くなった兵士さんたちのメモリアル。この時は空は雲に覆われていました。

We stopped at the Commando Memorial to get a few shots of the view.  The sky was almost all covered with low clouds then.

 

 

 

ダートモアでも見かけますが、スコットランド中で見かけたハリエニシダ（ゴース）。

We saw these gorse everywhere in Scotland.

 

 

肝心のネス湖の写真があまりなかったです、お天気が良くなかったのもありますが、写真を撮れる場所が見つけられなかったような。

Then the weather changed.

その後お天気が良くなって、暑いくらいに。

写真を撮り忘れてしまったのですが、ネス湖のあと近くの町インバネスのM＆Sのカフェで軽いランチをしました。そして、ランチの後でネス湖近くにあるトマーティンというウイスキー蒸溜所に行きました。１９８０年代に不況で経営が悪化したそうですが、１９８５年に宝酒造が出資することで閉鎖の危機を乗り切ったそうです。

I forgot to take a photo but we had a quick light lunch at the cafe in M&S in Inverness.   We then went to visit theTomatin Whisky Distillery.  Apparently they were almost forced to shut down in 1980s with the recession but an investment from Takara Shuzo (from Japan) saved it.

 

スコットランドではアルコールをほんの一口でも口にしたら車を運転してはいけないので、テイスティングも運転している夫は出来ずわたしが代わりに（笑）。ツアーもあまり時間がなかったので短いビデオだけ拝見しました。

In Scotland, there is zero allowance for alcohol for driving so my husband wasn’t able to taste any of their whiskies so I had to do it for him.  We didn’t have enough time to take their full tour so we just watched a short video which gave an overview of the distillery and the processes used in making their whisky. 

 

テイスティングはこの３種類。わたしはスコッチは嫌いではないもののそれほど飲むわけでもないのでどれが美味しいのかわからず（どれも美味しかった）。夫は１２年ものを買っていました。このウイスキーは、エジンバラ近郊で借りた家でみんなでちびちびと飲んで、残りは義弟のところに。

I tasted these 3.  Although I like single malt Scotch whisky, I’m not a connoisseur and couldn’t tell which one I liked best – they all tasted very good.  My husband decided to get their 12 year one, which was enjoyed by us and our friends/families at the house we stayed in later on near Edinburgh.

Then we headed back to our house.

 

 

 

 

Cragganmore distillery にも寄って、もう１本ウイスキーを購入。こちらは、シンガポールに持ち帰って夫がちびちびと楽しんで飲んでいます。

But we stopped at a second distillery – Craggannore – as well and bought a bottle of their whisky, which we brought back to Singapore and is being enjoyed very much by my husband.
