旅行の話に戻ります。エジンバラでの３日目。２日目に夫とわたしがフォトウォークをしている間ご一緒していたお友達ご夫婦はエジンバラの中心地からバスで Leith に行かれたのですが、カフェなどが並んで素敵なはずが Leith の大きなショッピングモールに出てしまったそうで、少し下調べをして素敵なはずの辺りに車で一緒に行ってみることになりました。ちょうどこの日は土曜日でリースでマーケットが出る日でしたので、まずはマーケットをぐるっと見てみました。小さなマーケットで５分くらいで見終えてしまうくらいでしたが、可愛いイタリアのお嬢さんが地元のチーズやサラミなどを売っておられたので少し買ってみました。おばあさまと一緒に売られていたのですが、おばあさまは英語が全然話せないようでただただ声を出して笑っておられました（笑）。
Back to our holiday. On the 3rd day in Edinburgh, our friends and we drove to Leith. On the day before, while my husband and I were taking the Photo Walk, our friends took a bus from the centre of Edinburgh city to take a look at Leith, but they got off at a large mall instead of where cafes are along the river, which is supposed to be the nice part. It was a Saturday and it was a market day in Leith so we first visited the market. It was very small and took only 5 minutes to look at all the stalls but we stopped at this place, where a charming young Italian girl was selling cheese, salami, ham etc from the region of Italy she is from. Her grandmother (I think) was also there but she didn’t speak any English, she just kept laughing. We tried a few things and bought a few things like cheese and salami.

事前に調べてピックアップしていたカフェ、Roseleaf Bar Cafe でランチ。
We had lunch at “Roseleaf Bar Cafe” that I had on my ‘places to go’ list.
カウンター席しか空いていなかったので、カウンター席で。喉が渇いていたので、まずはフレッシュのリンゴジュース、美味しかったです！
We sat at the counter stools as there were no tables available. I was thirsty so I ordered fresh apple juice and it was delicious.
ラギオールのナイフ。イギリスの小さなカフェではこれまで見たことがない気がしますが、気づかなかっただけ？
They use Lagiole’s knifes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in small cafes in England before but maybe I just never noticed. Before our food was served a table became available so we moved from the counter.
わたしは、ビーフバーガーにしました。イギリスで何度かビーフバーガを食べましたが、焼き加減を聞かれたことは今回は１度もなかったです、必ず完全なウェルダンで全くピンクがない状態で出てきました。ここもそうでしたが、塩加減がよく、お肉も臭みなく旨味があるお肉でおいしかったですし、バンズも美味しかったです。添えてあるフライドポテトはちょっと揚げ過ぎな感じでしたが、許容範囲。
I had a beef burger. I had a few beef burgers in the UK on this holiday but I was never asked how I’d like it and it always came as very very well done, there was no pinkness at all whatsoever. Still, at least, this was seasoned perfectly, the beef was good quality, no gamyness and had good flavour. The bun was very good, too. The fried potato was a little overdone but OK.

お友達が何を召し上がったのだったか。毎回写真を撮るのが気恥ずかしくて（他に撮っている人はいないので）撮りませんでした。お友達のランチが美味しかったのかどうかも覚えていませんが、わたしのバーガーはとっても美味しかったです。
I didn’t take photos of what our friends ordered. I feel a little embarrassed to take photos of food when nobody else is taking so I didn’t take many of other people’s food. I don’t even remember if they liked what they had but mine was really good.
最近は英国でも美味しいものにありつけますが、行き当たりばったりで入るとダメなことも多いような気がします。下調べして行った方が成功率が高い。
Recently, maybe in the last 6 or 7 years, I noticed that it’s getting easier to get good food in the UK. However, if we just take a chance without researching, the chances are that it’s not often good. I find that if I research in advance and pick a place that has good reputation, we have a much higher chance of getting good food.
この日は、この後ぶらぶらしていると雨が降ってきたので、他のカフェで紅茶やコーヒーを飲んで、雨が止んだ頃車に戻って借りていた家まで戻りました。少し雨が降った後はまたお天気になり、家の中は暑いくらいになっていて、今回の旅行では１日のうちに四季があると言われる典型的な英国のお天気が多かったです。
After lunch, we walked a little, then it started to rain – so we went in a cafe and had tea/coffee to wait for it to stop, then drove back home. After the little rain, it got sunny again and I remember the house was very hot when we got back. This trip we had many of these days where you have “four seasons in one day”.
