（とっくに日付は変わっていますが）今日（土曜日）はプラザシンガプーラに用があったので、プラザシンガプーラの Nam Nam でランチをしました。揚げ春巻き、ポークミンチのスパイシーなヌードル（インスタントラーメンにスパイシーなソースがかかっているもの）、バーンミーを夫とシェア。飲み物は、ライムのスパークリング。バーンミーは初めてベジタリアンにしてみたのですが、しいたけを煮たものの味が中華すぎて違和感があったので、抜いて食べました。

We needed to go to Plaza Singapura today (Saturday – the date has already changed but I haven’t gone to bed yet) so we had lunch at Nam Nam.  We shared Deep-fried spring rolls, Spicy noodles with mince pork and Vietnamese Sandwich and had a glass of Lime Sparkling each.  We had a vegetarian sandwich for the first time but I didn’t like the shiitake mushroom’s.  I don’t mind shiitake but I didn’t think it went well with the sandwich.

買い物というのは、実はミシン。と言ってもわたしは縫い物は余り出来ないので、カード作りに使いたくて安いものを買うつもりでした。ところが、ほとんどチョイスがなく、欲しいと思っていたタイプのものは高すぎてあきらめました。縫い物に使うなら良いですが、カードの飾り縫いに使うだけなのに高級なものは必要ないですしね〜。アメリカなら１万円ちょっとであるようなミシンが、ここでは７、８万円するようでした。

The reason why we needed to go to Plaza Singapura was because I wanted to buy a new sewing machine.  It’s not that I do any proper sewing, I just wanted one to use for card making, but what I wanted was so expensive.  There were only a few choices and they seem so expensive for what they are.  The one I wanted is only about US120, but here it cost 7 to 8 times that!  I didn’t feel I can justify the cost just for card making.

ちなみに、ミシンは一応持ってはいるのです。なぜ買ったのか覚えていませんが、日本で習い事先で親しくなったタイ人のお友達が簡単な洋服の作り方を教えてくださったときに使って（２５年以上前のこと。。。）、その後、香港で一度縫い物が出来るお友達と着物や帯の生地でバッグを作ろうということになって使ったことがありましたが、わたしはほとんどなにもせずお友達が試作品を作ってくださったのだったと思います。（その時のブログを読んで、はて、その後、ちゃんとしたバッグは作ったのだったっけ？？検索しても出てこないということは、試作だけで終わってしまったのだったのかな？）それも２００８年８月のことなので９年も前のこと。以来一度もミシンを使ったことはありませんでした。

I do have a sewing machine, a very old one that I bought in Japan when we were living there.  I don’t remember why I bought it, I guess I wanted to be able to sew, but a Thai friend I had in Japan was very good at sewing and I did use it when she taught me how to make some simple clothes.  That was more than 25 years ago.  Then, in Hong Kong, a friend of mine who could sew and I decided that we wanted to make a bag using some of my kimono or/and obi fabric and we made a small trial bag using normal cotton fabric.  I say “we” but I think it was my friend who did most of the work.  (I wonder if we made a real one using kimono or obi fabric after that, I cannot find any blog post so I’m guessing we never made it.)  That was in August 2008, so 9 years ago.

新しいミシンは余りに高いのに驚いて諦めましたが、スティッチをしないとどうにも格好がつかないな〜、と思うカードを途中までたくさん作っていたので、９年ぶりにミシンを出してみることにしました。埃をとって、ボビンに糸を巻くところから（すっかりやり方を忘れていたのでネット検索してやっとです）。上糸もセットして恐る恐るスイッチを入れて見たらちゃんとスイッチが入り、ちゃんと動きました！手元を照らす小さな電気さえもちゃんとつきました！いやぁ、さすがは日本製、と夫とびっくり。上糸が強すぎて縫い目が変ですがそれは９年前からそうで、上糸を一番強い状態にセットしていてもそうなのでこれ以上調節出来ないのですが、カードに使うには十分なのでとりあえずこれで我慢。

So, I gave up the idea of buying a new sewing machine – but I’d already started to make many cards that needed the addition of some stitches as finishing touches, so I decided to challenge myself (it was a huge challenge for me!) to use the one I’ve had for more than 25 years (probably 30 years…).  So I dusted it off, searched on the internet for how to thread a bobbin and threaded one, threaded the machine, turned the switch on –  and it worked!  Even the little light works!  Most of the electric appliances that we buy in Hong Kong and Singapore break in less than 5 or 6 years.  Well done Japan!!

It doesn’t stitch properly – even 9 years ago it didn’t.  The upper thread tension is too strong so the stitches don’t look right but its good enough for cards.
