今朝、やっと洗濯機と乾燥機が届きました！いえ、オーダーして１週間弱で届いたのですが、オーダーが遅かったのです。もっと大事なことでしなくてはいけないことが多すぎて、値が張るのでしっかり調べてから買わなくてはいけないものについては先送りになっていました。洗濯機も乾燥機も賢いのを買ったようなのですが（夫任せ）、なぜかプログラム通りにすると乾燥に「３時間半」かかったりするのです。なぜなのかは謎ですが、色々触って無理やり１時間で終わらせていますが、３時間半ってなに？！

Yay! A washing machine & a tumble drier arrived!! It hasn’t taken that long since we placed the orders, I think it was less than 1 week, it’s just that there have been so many other higher priority things to do that we hadn’t been able to place orders – because these things are expensive and you need time to research which ones to buy. I left it to my husband to choose and he bought “premium products” according to the people who came to install them, but when we set the programme according to what we were washing, it said it was going to take 3 and a half hours to wash! We changed the programme sort of according to the time it takes rather than what was the type of washing to make it to an hour, I don’t understand why anything takes 3.5 hours!

とにかく、そんな訳で、やっと家でお洗濯が出来ました。すぐ近くにコインランドリーはありますが、寒いし面倒なのでしばらくお洗濯物を貯めていたので、今日は３回回しました。

Anyway, as we finally have a washing machine and a tumble drier, we can finally do washing! There is a laundrette near us and we’ve used it but it’s cold there and takes time (and lots of one pound coins) so we hadn’t done washing for a while – we had 3 loads to do once the new machine was in.

お洗濯の合間に近くのパブで遅いランチを食べて（いつものプラウマンズをシェアー）、お買い物。お買い物と言っても夕食のお買い物と必要な日用品（今日はアイロンとアイロン台）。

In between washing, we had lunch in a nearby pub – just a Ploughman’s to share – and did some more shopping (just food and household stuff, nothing exciting, just things we need like an iron and an ironing board).

比較的早めに家に戻り、夕食の準備まで特にしなくてはいけないこともなかったので、お茶を飲みながら「クリスマスキャロル」（今 BBC1 で放映されている怖いバージョン，あまり評判が良くない模様）を１部見て、夕食の後またもう１部見ました。

As we were home relatively early and there wasn’t anything we had to do other than washing and cooking dinner, we watched 1 episode of Christmas Carol (BBC1 – not good review so far…) before dinner, then another one after dinner.

今日の夕食は、ヨークシャープディングとソーセージと茹で野菜。本当は Toad In The Hole というヨークシャープディングの生地とソーセージを一緒に焼くものを作ろうと夫が言ったのですが、生地がべちゃっとしてしまうのが嫌で別に焼きました。オーブンの温度が少し高すぎたらしく、ヨークシャープディングはちょっとカリカリになりすぎた感じ。まだオーブンをあまり使っていないので，慣れるまでしばらくかかりそうです。そして、さて、グレービーを作ろうと思ったらグレービーの素を買っていませんでした。なんてこと！グレービーの素がなくても作れない訳ではないのですが、気付いたときは遅すぎてそれからでは時間的に，無理な状況でした。グレービーなしで全然気分が出ません、残念！

So, today’s dinner was sausages, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. My husband suggested Toad In The Hole, but I find Yorkshire pudding becomes a little soggy in the middle when you cook it with sausages so I suggested to cook them separately. The oven temperature was probably too high, and the Yorkshire pudding became a little too crispy. We haven’t used this oven much yet, so it’ll take a while to get used to it. The shocking thing was that just when we were going to make gravy we realised we didn’t buy Bisto. We usually cheat and use Bisto for gravy. We could have made it properly if we knew we didn’t have it but by the time we realised it it was too late, everything was nearly ready. It wasn’t the same without gravy! So sad!

ソーセージ３本は多すぎたので，１本ずつ残して冷凍しました。ソーセージサンドになる予定。

3 sausages was too many, so we left 1 each and froze them – they’ll be used for sausage sandwiches.

ずっと同じテーブルセッティングで飽きてきました。ダイニングルームのものはまだ開けていない箱がほとんどですが、テーブルクロスの箱はたまたま見つかったので開けてあります。洗濯ができなかったので使っていませんでしたが，そろそろ使おうかな。

I’m getting tired of the same table setting. Most boxes from the dining room haven’t been opened but we did open the box of some tablecloths. I haven’t used one until now because we didn’t have a washing machine, but I think we’ll start using them now.

さて、いよいよ、明日はクリスマスイブですね。

Now, tomorrow is Christmas Eve.

わたしたちにとっては、今年はちょっと変な感じのクリスマス。気候もクリスマスらしい寒さですし、街に出る機会も多いのである意味ではクリスマスムードを感じていますが、家族やお友達とパーティーをしていないので別の意味ではあまりクリスマスらしさを感じられずにいます。昔香港で西洋人のお友達が多かったときには、クリスマスの前から１月初めにかけてはお互いに呼んだり呼ばれたりして気分が盛り上がりましたし、シンガポールでは日本人のお友達と集まっていたのを懐かしく思い出します。ここは車で出かけなくてはいけないのであまりお酒を飲めないのもありますし、この時期みなさんご家族との集まる準備でお忙しいですし、わたしたちも企画する余裕がなく、ちょっと寂しい感じもします。来年は何かしら企画できますように。

For us, this Christmas is a little strange one. With the right sort of weather and being out in towns with decorations, we feel more Christmassy in that sense. However, we haven’t had any Christmas parties with families and friends, which usually makes you feel more Christmassy. When we lived in Hong Kong we had many non-Japanese friends, whom we got together with for drinks and meals before and after Christmas, I used to enjoy them so much. In Singapore, most of my friends were Japanese but I used to host a little party or two with my friends before Christmas and that made me feel a little Christmassy, I miss all that. Here, you need to drive so it’s difficult to have a party with drinks and also everyone is busy with thse preparation for family gatherings this time of year. We ourselves were also too buy to organise anything, so I do miss the parties we had in Hong Kong and Singapore. Hopefully we will be organised enough so we can do something next year.

が、明日から３泊で大好きなデボンのホテルに泊まりに行きます。ホテルは綺麗にクリスマスのデコレーションがされているはずですし、クリスマスらしい気分に浸れるのではないかと思っています。

However, we are going to go and stay at one of our favourite hotels in the world in Devon for 3 nights from tomorrow. I know the hotel is decorated beautifully, so we’ll be able to enjoy the feeling of Christmas there.

最後までイギリスに越してきて初めてのクリスマスは家で過ごそうかどうしようか迷いましたが、まだ家の中もすっきりしていませんし、オーブンにも慣れていませんし、しばらく忙しかったので２人でのんびりすることにしました。

We couldn’t decide until a few weeks ago what to do with Christmas. In a way we wanted to spend it at our new home but we knew it won’t be as tidy as we would like, we haven’t got used to the oven etc so in the end we decided to go away and relax.

日本は明日がクリスマス本番という感じですよね。お子さんがおられないご夫婦はきっとクリスマスはほとんど関係ないと思いますが、お子さんがいらっしゃるご家庭ではやはりちょっとしたイベントですよね。みなさん、楽しいクリスマスをお過ごしくださいませ。

Tomorrow (well, actually it’s already today) is Christmas to Japanese people as they tend to celebrate it on Christmas Eve. Those who don’t have children probably don’t do anything much but those with children, I guess, would be celebrating it with presents and cakes.
