先日、キッチンでお茶の用意をしていたときに夫が窓の外を指差して「あれ、なに？」というので見てみると、きつつきっぽい鳥が家の前のグリーンで地面をつついていました。調べてみたところ、多分、グリーン・ウッドペッカー、だと思います。雄は頭が赤いのですが、雌は赤くないらしいです。ウッドペッカーなのですが他のウッドペッカーのように木を突くことは少なく、土にいる蟻を食べるのだそう。

A few days ago, when we were making tea in the kitchen, my husband said “What is that?” pointing outside the window and when I looked there was a bird that looked like a woodpecker, which was pecking the ground in the green area in front of our house.  We looked it up online and we think it was Green Woodpecker.  The male green woodpeckers have red heads but females don’t.  Apparently, although they are called ‘woodpeckers’, they tend to eat ants on the ground rather than pecking at a tree trunk.
