毎年、日本の皆さんのインスタにガレット・デ・ロワがたくさんアップされるこの時期、わたしも食べたいと思うのですが、去年、一昨年は近くで買えるところを見つけることが出来ず、ロンドンからデリバリーという手もあることはあるのですがお値段があまりに高くて諦めました。なので、最後に食べたのは３年前、シンガポールでですが、そのときはPから始まる某チェーン店のものを買ったら卵臭くて食べらないくらい酷かった。なので、まともなものを食べるのは多分４年ぶりかそれ以上振り。

Every year this time of year I see a lot of “Galette des Rois” on Instagram and I feel like having one but I hadn’t found any shop where they we can get one around here.  We could have one delivered from London but it seems too expensive so I gave up last year and the year before.  So the last time we had one was 3 years ago in Singapore, we bought one in one of the well-known Chain bakery/cafe (it starts with P and they are in England, too), but we couldn’t eat much of it because it tasted so eggy and awful, it wasn’t properly baked.  So I guess it’s been at least 4 years since we had a proper one.

去年は見つけられなかったのですが、車で３０分くらいのところ Shoreham by Sea というところにあるフレンチ・ベーカリー「La Patisserie」を見つけたので、行ってみました。以前も書きましたが、イギリスには日本やフランスにたくさんあるタイプのケーキ屋さんはロンドン以外ではほぼ見かけませんし、ロンドンにもそれほどたくさんはないみたいです。ケーキ屋さんやティーハウスはありますが、家で焼くような素朴なイギリスのケーキしか売っていなくて、見た目が綺麗でフランス風のものは見かけないのです。そして、今日も思ったのですが、日本なら住宅街に美味しいパン屋さんやケーキ屋さんがありますが、イギリスでは住宅街に（買い忘れがあったりしたときに行くような必需品を売っているお店はありますが）お店はほとんど見かけません、お店はお店がずらっと並んでいる街の中心やショッピングモールなどにしかない気がします。今日行ったお店もやはり街の中心のお店がずらっと並んでいるところにありました。

Although I couldn’t find anywhere we can get one the last two years, I found one this year – it takes about 30 minutes by car so not very close but not too far.  It’s a French bakery called “La Patisserie” in Shoreham by Sea.  I’ve written this before but in Japan we have French style bakeries everywhere but I haven’t found any around here.  There are cake shops/bakeries and tea houses, where you can get very simple home style cakes but not the sort of cake that you see in Japan and France that look pretty and sophisticated.  I’ve also noticed that you don’t see many shops, any shops, in residential areas here, shops are all lined up together in the centre of the city/town or in shopping malls, whereas in Japan there are shops here and there in residential area as well as in shopping areas/shopping malls.  This bakery was also in the centre of the town.

車で３０分走って行ってお目当てのガレット・デ・ロワがないと残念すぎるので、事前にお電話をして予約をして行きました。他にもケーキを買うつもりだったのですが、思っていたほど種類がなくて残念。土曜日の午後だったので余り残っていなかったようです。マカロンやチョコレートなどもありました。そして、なかなか美味しいバゲットが見つからないのでバゲットをトライしてみようと１本だけ買ってみたのですが、結構美味しかったです、これまでわたしたちがイギリスでトライした中で一番美味しいと思いました。そして、夕食用にマッシュルームとリークのキッシュも買ってみました。

We didn’t want to drive for 30 minutes and find out that they don’t have a Galette des Rois so we booked one yesterday on the phone.  I was planning to buy some other cakes (pastries) as well but there weren’t many to choose from.  It looks like many had been sold before we got there as it was in the afternoon on a Saturday.  They had macarons, chocolates, and some pastries but we decided to just buy 2 slices of quiche (mushroom & leek) and a baguette (because so far we haven’t found those that we really like).  We tried a little bit of the baguette and it is quite good, I think the best we’ve tried here.

お店の中には少ししかテーブルはなかったのですが、お天気がよければ外席に座れます。

There were only a few tables inside the bakery but it looks like they have quite a few tables outside if the weather is good.

 

 

 

 

ガレット・デ・ロワもわたしたちが予約した分以外に３つ（小さいサイズ）残っていました。

They did have 3 small Galette des Rois other than the one we had booked.

 

 

 

 

４人分の小さいサイズを買いましたが、４人分には多い。６−８人分ですね。もう１つ大きなサイズもあるそうです。とても美味しかったです。

We bought the smaller size one, which is supposed to be for 4 people but I would say it’s enough for 6-8 people.  They have a larger size as well.  It was very tasty.

 

 

王冠が２つついてきたのであれ？と思っていましたが、なんと、フェーブも２つ入っていました。調べてみたところ、南フランスのガレット・デ・ロワにはフェーブが２つ入っていると書かれているものがありました。半分に切る時にガチンと当たってしまい（有りがちですよね）、事前に相談してその場合は切った人が王様（王妃様）と決めていたのでわたしが王妃になりました。で、その半分を３つに切る時にもう１つガチン（笑）。２度目に切ったときは、夫に切ってもらうべきでした。フェーブは、１つはきつね、１つはキリストでしょうか？

It came with 2 crowns so we were wondering why, but it was because there are 2 faves inside.   I did a little research online and found out that they put in two in the South of France.  When I cut it in half, my knife hit one of them.  My husband and I talked about it in advance and decided that the person who cut it will be the king/queen if the knife hit it, so I was the queen this year.  I then went to cut the half in 3, when I hit another one!  I should have asked my husband to cut the 2nd cut, shouldn’t I?  One of them was a fox and the other is a Christ figure?
