旧正月が近づいてきて、シンガポールやマレーシアからのインスタにはたくさん旧正月のデコレーションがアップされていて、懐かしくなりました。わたしたちも香港に１１年住んでいましたし、中華系の方が多いシンガポールにも同じくらい住んでいたので、日本のお正月よりも旧正月の方が馴染み深いくらいになり、今でも懐かしく感じます。

Chinese New Year is coming soon and I see a lot of posts of Chinese New Year decorations on Instagram from Singapore and Malaysia.  We lived in Hong Kong for 11 years and about the same length in Singapore, where a lot of Chinese People live, so Chinese New Year may be more familier to us now than Japanese New Year.

マークス＆スペンサーズで旧正月の特別メニューの中華料理のテイクアウト用パックが出ていたので、買ってみました。イギリスに来てから、（ロンドンの鼎泰豊で小籠包やヌードルなど食べましたが）まともな中華料理を食べていない気がします。ロンドンなら美味しいところもあるのでしょうが、この辺りの中華料理屋さんは期待出来ないんですよね。昔はイギリスのお料理は美味しくないのでインド料理か中華料理を食べるべし、などと言われていて、確かにインド料理は割と美味しいと思うのですが、中華はいまいちかな〜と思っています。でも、中華料理もたまには食べたいし、良い機会なのでトライしてみました。

I saw this special menu of a Chinese take away package for Chinese New Year from M&S so we decided to try it.  Since we came to England we hadn’t been to many Chinese restaurants, we did have a light lunch at Din Tai Fung in London that we enjoyed but other than that not much Chinese food.  In London maybe there are some good Chinese restaurants, but I doubt if we can find any good one around here.  People used to say that we should eat Indian or Chinese because British food isn’t good and I think Indian is pretty good but my experience with Chinese restaurants isn’t so good.  Still, I sort of missed Chinese (I think my husband doesn’t mind not having Chinese at all), so we tried it.

春巻き、カンポチキン、チキンのブラックビーンソース、シンガポールヌードル、卵入りチャーハンは２人分入っていて、１０ポンド（１５００円）。

期待しないで食べようね、と言って食べましたが、「まぁ、こんなもんでしょうね。」という感じです。ご飯がすごく乾いて硬くなってしまっていたのが残念でしたが、他は、まぁ、こんなもんだよね、と言いながら食べました。気分転換になりましたが、また食べるかと言われると、多分、またはない。１年後くらいなら、また買うかもしれませんが、それもどうかな。

We said to each other not to expect much and it was OK.   The rice had gone extremely dry and hard so it wasn’t nice at all, but the other dishes were sort of OK.  It was fun to try and it made a change, but I don’t think we would buy it again.  Maybe once a year if that.

食事の用意を始めようとしたら、夫がこんな格好でキッチンに入ってきました（笑）。

シンガポールでは旧正月には獅子舞があちらこちらを練り歩きオフィースも依頼して来てもらうのですが、その際、夫がデスクの上にみかんを２つ置いておいて、獅子舞の獅子がその上に被さり、皮を剥いたみかんを残してお金を持って行くらしいのですが、その時必ず夫はこのジャケットを着ていたらしいです。そして、その日には旧正月をお祝いするような洋服で出勤する人が多いらしいのですが、夫は毎年ベストドレッサーに選ばれていたそうです。毎年同じ服を着ていたのに、なんだかな〜、ですが。

When we started preparing the dinner, my husband came into the kitchen wearing this jacket.

In Singapore, around Chinese New Year, lion dances are performed everywhere and every office makes an arrangement for one to visit their office.  On the day the lion dance was performed in my husband’s office, my husband would put 2 oranges and money in a red envelope on his desk.  The lion would cover the desk, wiggle about for a while and when he came away the two oranges were peeled and the money was gone.  On that day, many people dressed up to celebrate CNY and he used to wear this jacket and he won the best dressed award almost every year.  He wore the same jacket every year, I don’t know why they voted for him every year!
