久しぶりに、ガーデンセンターに行ってきました。イギリスに引っ越してきてから何度か行っていますが、主にお庭に置くプランターを見に行くためで、ゆっくりと植物を見たことはあまりなかったような気がします。

We visited a garden centre today, we hadn’t been to one for a while.  We’ve been to garden centres a few times since we moved to England but not as often as we thought we would and I don’t think we took much time to browse the plants because we usually went just to get something like planters.

以前にもアップしたことがあったと思いますが、イギリスのガーデンセンターはとても大規模で、植物やガーデニング道具だけではなくお庭に置くための家具やバーベキュー関係のものや普通の食器やカードなどさまざまなものが置かれています。植物の種類や量も圧巻です。最初見た時はびっくりしましたが、イギリスではロンドンなど大都会に住んでいれば別ですが、都会を少し離れたところに住んでいる人はほとんどがお庭付きの家に住んでいますし、ガーデニングが好きな方が多いので需要が全然いますもんね。

I’ve blogged it before but garden centres in England are huge. As well as plants and gardening tools, they have outdoor furniture, BBQ and BBQ tools, cards, even ordinary dishes etc.  The varieties and numbers of plants are enormous, I was very impresed when I was there for the first time.  I suppose unlike Japan there aren’t a lot of large cities and unless you live in London or in a large expensive city, most people live in a house with a garden and there are many garden enthusiasists.

そして、ちょっとした年配の方達の溜まり場のようになっていて、見かける方達ほとんどがわたしたちより年配の方達。ま、わたしたちも十分に年配なのですが。

It also tends to be a place for elderly people.  Most people we see seem more elderly than us – although I’m sure we are in a group of elderly as well.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

大きなカフェ（というより、セルフサービスの食堂のような感じ）もあって食事も出来ますし、甘いものや食べ物もいただけます。結構いつも賑わっている印象です。わたしたちも植物を見たあと、お茶をしました。ラズベリーとホワイトチョコレートのマフィンをシェアーしましたが、あれはマフィンとは呼べないと思います、マフィンの形をしたパウンドケーキでした。パウンドケーキと思っていただけば美味しかったです。でも、ラズベリーはほとんどなかったような。

This one also has a very large cafe with good varieties of foods and sweets, and I tihnk they are often quite busy.  We had tea at the cafe today after browsing the plants and shared Raspberry & White Chocolate Muffin.  Well, it wasn’t really a muffin, it was pound cake in the shape of a muffin but as long as you don’t expect a light fluffy muffin it was enjoyable.  I don’t remember seeing any raspberries, though…
