My husband’s younger brother and his wife were in Chichester for some event and so we had a late lunch together at “Purchases”. It was very sunny today so not too bad in the sun but it was starting to get dark when we left the restaurant and felt very cold.
We all ordered from the lunch course menu today. My husband and I each had Ratatouille & Goat Cheese Terrine for our starters.

My sister-in-law had Salmon.

My brother-in-law had Mushroom Veloute.

For the main, I couldn’t find anything I thought I would really like. I thought Pork Belly might be a bit risky because whenever I have it in England it tastes too gamy, but I decided to try it because the pork chop that I had here a little while ago was excellent, although whenever I had it anywhere else it was always dry and tough. Sadly, I shouldn’t have tried it, it was gamy and also very dry and I managed to eat only about 1/4 of it. Mashed potato and the sauce was also very under seasoned so I couldn’t enjoy any. Having said that my brother-in-law had the same dish and he finished it all. I feel English people in general don’t mind dry meat and they don’t seem to mind as much things being under-seasoned or over-seasoned, basically they don’t seem as fussy as we Japanese. I think this was the first time I didn’t enjoy a meal in this particular restaurant, though, it happens.

My sister-in-law and my husband had Sea Bream for their mains, which I think they both enjoyed.

My husband had Deconstructed Chocolate Cheese Cake for dessert.

My brother-in-law had Lemon Posset.

My sister-in-law and I had Sticky Toffee Pudding. As Toffee Sauce is often very sweet I asked them to serve it on the side and I had just a little drizzle over the pudding, it was very good.

With a bottle of sparkling water and a glass of wine each, it was £95 (17,660 yen) per couple. This is not expensive for this type of restaurant in England, good value when you can find things you want from the set menu. However as soon as I see it converted to Japanese yen it seems very expensive. Although the portions are smaller in Japan (probably about a half of the portions here), I think we would probably pay about 1/3 or less for a similar type of a meal. I don’t know how they do it in Japan.
