デボンでの２日目の目的地は、デボンに近いところにあるコーンウォルのナショナルトラスト、「Cotehele」でした。このマナーハウスは１４８５年に建てられたそうで、５００年の間ほとんど変わらない状態で保たれているそうです。印象的なのは、どのお部屋も壁のほとんどがタペストリーで埋まっていたこと。中に教会もありました。

On our 2nd day in Devon, we were driving the countryside heading to a National Trust in Cornwall, “Cothele“.  This medieval manor house was built in 1484, not much changed in 500 years.  The house and gardens were given to the National Trust in 1947. We were impressed how most of the walls of the rooms were covered with large tapestries.  There was also a chapel inside the house.

マナーハウスの敷地は坂道を降りてタマー川まで広がっており、川まで降りるとナショナル・マリタイム・ミュージアムがあり、渓谷にはいくつかのフォーマル・ガーデンがあるそうなのですが、わたしたちは残念ながら余り時間がなかったのと、かなり急な坂道で暑い中下から上がってくるのが大変そうだったので途中で引き返しましたが、多くの植物が植えられていてとても綺麗でした。暑くない日にまたゆっくりと行ってみたいです。

The grounds stretch down to a quay on the River Tamar where there is an outpost of the National Maritime Museum and there are a number of formal gardens in the valley, but we didn’t have much time and the slope was quite steep and we thought it would be a hard work coming up again in the hot weather so we didn’t go all the way down.  I’d love to go back and go down all the way and spend more time when it’s not very hot.
