Notes About Marrakesh

今回のマラケシュ旅行は、わたしたちにとってはちょっと冒険でした。夫もわたしも汚いところは苦手ですし、歳をとるにつれて言葉が通じなかったり値段交渉しなくてはいけなかったりというところは敬遠しがちになっていますし、出来るだけ色々な意味で楽に旅行をできる場所を選ぶようになっています。夫の大きなお祝いだったのでいつも行っているところに行って後々思い出に残らないのは残念なので、これまで行ったことがないところでしなかったことをしたいと言ったのはわたしで、夫はあまり気乗りしない感じでした。イスタンブールかマラケシュにしたいんだけど、どっちが良い？と聞いたときに、どっちかだったらマラケシュの方がましかな、というような消極的な反応だったのです（笑）。夫のお祝いなのでもちろん嫌ならやめたのですが、じゃあ行ってみようかという感じだったので押してみました。

This trip to Marrakesh was an adventure for us. My husband and I don’t like dirty or busy places in general and the older we get the more lazy we get and we tend to go to the places where we can get around easily. However I wanted this holiday to be more special, something we can remember well so I asked my husband which he prefers, Marrakesh or Istanbul. He wasn’t very keen on either but he said “well, if I have to choose one I think Marrakesh”.

He says he really wasn’t keen but he is so happy we went there. He repeatedly told me it was the best holiday ever.

Marrakesh is such a special place, it’s full of character, energetic, colourful and charming, we just loved the place. Even though it had some aspect that we don’t like – like you have to negotiate prices when you do shopping or get charged more when you take taxis and have to be careful not to be over-charged all the time etc – it is such a special place you cannot help loving it. Of course, having 8 good friends with us made the time even more special.

We really appreciate them taking time and coming all the way to Mararkesh. Everyone is busy these days and it’s not so simple to take a few days off and spend the time with others. At our age, we know how precious it is to get such a special time with our good friends. We had a very tough one year with my side of families not being well and had a lot of worries and heartaches so it was so good to be able to have some “fun” time together. It was so great to spend a few days with them.

This was a big thing for me, to have a holiday that will be extra special for my husband. I am so grateful that I was able to do so, thanks to our friends. And I’m thankful that we had such a lovely time together.

結果的には、これまでで一番楽しかったと夫もなんども言っているくらい思い出に残る楽しい休暇になりました。マラケシュは思っていた以上に素敵なところで、値段交渉しなくてはいけなかったり、うっかりしていると道案内に騙されたり、タクシーにぼられたり、そんな気が抜けない面はあるものの個人的には危険を感じたことはありませんでしたし、何よりも文化が面白く、街の建物も味があって飽きませんでした。そして、何と言っても、お友達ご夫婦４組のみなさんが来てくださったお陰で、更に更に特別な時間を過ごすことが出来ました。

海外に住む何人ものお友達と集まれる機会など、そうそうないこと。こういう機会を持てたことが本当に有難く、感謝してもしきれない気持ちです。お仕事のお休みをとって、またはお忙しい毎日の中からお時間を割いて飛行機に乗って来てくださって、本当にありがとうございました。この１年、大きな心配事が絶えない日々で心が休まる時間がありませんでしたが幸い丁度少し落ち着いていたところでしたので、マラケシュでは久しぶりにあ〜、楽しかった！と思える日々を過ごすことが出来ました。楽しい時間はあっという間に終わってしまいちょっと寂しい気持ちもありましたが、いつかまたこんな素敵なときを過ごせるといいな、と夢見ながら、幸せな気持ちいっぱいでマラケシュを後にしました。

さて、マラケシュについての注意事項など少しまとめておきたいと思います。

マラケシュの空港での入国にはとても時間がかかりました。お友達は３０分程度とおっしゃっていたのでそのときのタイミングによるようですがわたしたちは１時間半並びましたので、スケジュールには少し余裕を持った方が良いと思います。
入国手続きが終わってドアを出てすぐのところでINWIという電話会社のSIMカードを無料配布していました。いつもそうかどうかわかりませんが、無料でない場合も販売はしているはず。街中にINWIがたくさんあるので、そこで手続きをすれば１週間２０ディラム（現在のレートで約２４５円）で1ギガまでネットが使えます。（もちろん、電話はSIMフリーである必要があります。）（日数によって容量と値段が違ってきます。）マラケシュのスーク（市場）は迷路のようでとてもわかりにくいので、地図で場所を確認しながら目的地に向かうのがお勧めです。お陰でわたしたちはあまり迷わずすみましたが、お友達はみなさん迷っては地元の方に案内料として５０ディラム払っておられました。
小銭が必要な場面も多いので、細かいお金を持ち歩いていると便利です。チップは大体US$1（１０ディラム）が目安と読みました。ブログにも書いたようにタクシーは大抵ホテルから目的地までが２０ディラム、外から乗る場合は５０ディラムでした。
ホテルや観光客向けのレストランのトイレは大丈夫ですが、場所によってはトイレットペーパーがないそうですので持ち歩くと良いかもしれません。わたしたちがエッサウィラに行った途中で寄ってお茶を飲んだところはトイレの外に女性が座っていて、トイレットペーパーと手を洗う石鹸はその人にもらわなくてはならず、チップを要求されました。
顔の写真を撮られるのを嫌がる方がとても多く、特に子供さんの顔を撮るのは大人が嫌がるようです。顔を撮らなくてもお店の写真などを撮ると嫌がられる場合もあるようですので写真を撮るときは気をつけられる方が良いと思います。また、フナ広場の蛇遣いの人や民族衣装を着て立っている方たちは写真を撮ると結構高額なチップを要求するそうです。
スーク（市場）の中を歩いていたりすると手を洗いたくても洗えない場合もあるので、消毒用の液体かティッシュを持ち歩くのが良いと思います。
日中は大変日差しが強いのでサングラス、帽子、または日傘がある方が良いと思います。乾燥していたので日に当たるととても暑かったのですが（１１月初旬でも３０度くらいまで上がりました）、日傘があると随分暑さがしのげました。日傘をさしている人など他に見ませんでしたが（笑）、特に奇異な目で見られることもありませんでした。
反対に、夜は思っているより寒かったです。（２０１５年１１月初旬）わたしは荷物が増えるのが嫌で昼間は夏服、夜はその上にウルトラダウンを着ましたがそれでも寒かったので、昼間は夏服を着て出て、一度ホテルで着替えて夜出かけるときは日本の秋の服装が理想です。イスラム教の方が多いので、暑くてもあまり肌を出しすぎない方が良いかもしれません。もちろん観光客は気にしない方もおられますし色々ですが、女性はあまり肌を出さない方がいいような雰囲気はありました。タンクトップとショートパンツの観光客の方は多くいらしたような気がしますが、キャミソールは避けた方が良い気がします。

A few notes that might be helpful if you go to Marrakesh.

It depends on your luck but it took us an hour and a half to get through the immigration at the airport in Marrakesh. It’s better not to have a tight schedule on the day you arrive.
We were given a SIM card each by one of the local phone companies, INWI at the airport after immigration. We then went to one of their shops, paid 20 dhim (about US$2) for 1 GB of data for 1 week. (I guess you don’t really need to pick up a SIM card at the airport, you just need to go to one of their shops.) It was so useful to have access to the internet whilst out and about, I thoroughly recommend you to get one. The souk in Marrakesh is like a maze, you are bound to get lost, then you’ll be paying something like 50 dhim to a local guy who shows you the way. Thankfully we had a SIM card each and my husband was able to find our way using google maps but all of our friends (who didn’t get SIM cards) kept getting lost and paying to the local guys. It’s OK to get lost if you can enjoy it as a part of the experience, though.
It’s likely that you need small money like 10 – 50 dhim for tips or taxies. Taxi was usually US20 from the hotel to wherever we went, but US50 to get back.
The washrooms in hotels and restaurants were OK but if you go to a local place you’ll need to take toilet paper with you. When we stopped at a local cafe on our way to Essaouira there was a lady outside the washroom with toilet paper and soap and she demanded a tip.
Many people don’t like to have photos taken specially their faces so you need to be considerate when you take photos. Some people in Jemaa el-Fnaa like snake charmers and those with colourful costumes will demand a big tip if you take photos of them, so be careful not to take their photos from the front of them.
Sanitiser wipe or gel is useful after walking in the souk.
It was very hot during the day (early November 2015) and cold at night. During the day you need sunglasses and/hat or a parasol as the sun is very strong. I was wearing summer clothes during the day and wore a ultra-down coat at night but I was still cold. Ideally you should wear summer clothes during the day, but change into autumn clothes (light wool?) with a light coat, I think.
It’s probably better not to wear too skimpy clothes if you respect the local custom. Of course it’s up to you if you care or not but I personally would feel uncomfortable to wear camisole and very short shorts even if I looked good in them! Many tourists were wearing short-sleeves or tank-top and normal shorts.
