暑い暑いと言っていましたが数日前から気温が下がったのか、少しましになっている気がします。コンピューターを置いているスタディーの温度も２４、５度まで下がるようになりました。
I was saying it was soooo hot but it seems to have gone a little less hot, I see the temperature of the Study is down to 24-25C, much better.
旅行のとき、素敵なホテルに泊まるのも楽しみの１つですが、数日から１週間くらい家を借りることが多いです。お洗濯が出来るので持って行く衣類を減らすことができますし、（わたしは朝食はいただきませんが）朝食は家で簡単なものですませることもできますし、夕食もデリなどで買ってきて済ませてしまうことも可能ですし、お天気が悪くても出かけず家でゆっくり過ごすという選択もあります。宿泊費も（家にもよりますが）ホテルより安く済むことが多いです。１週間荷造りをしなくても良いのも気が楽。
Staying in nice hotels is one of the pleasures of travelling but when we are on holiday we often rent a house for a few days or a week. That way, we can do washing so have to take less luggage, you don’ t need to go out for breakfasts (although I don’t take it anyway), you can have something very simple for supper like some deli stuff if you like and you can stay home if the weather is bad and you don’t feel like going out. Cost is often less than hotels although not always – depends on how luxurious you want the house to be. You also don’t need to do packing and unpacking every day!
ただ、希望する条件の家はなかなか見つかりません。予算もありますしね。なので、１日に何時間も何週間かひたすら検索して、やっとここなら大丈夫かなと思うところを見つけます。夫にそんな時間はないので、わたしのお仕事です。
However I find it very hard to find a house that I want within the budget. I spend hours a day, weeks and months sometimes to find the right one. My husband doesn’t have such time so it’s my job.
希望する条件は、お部屋にトイレ、バスルーム（シャワーだけでオーケーですが）がついていること。数組で借りるときは出来れば夫婦の数のトイレとバスルームがほしいところ。リビングルームは、たとえ２人で借りるときでも広めのところが希望。キッチンもある程度素敵なところ。できれば広めのお庭があると嬉しい。そして、内装が好みなところ。
What I want for such a house is – a bathroom with at least a shower and a toilet for each room if possible. I want the living room to be quite large even when it’s only for 2 of us and the kitchen to be nice. If possible, I would like a nice large garden, too. Of course the interior needs to be pleasant to us.
大きなネックは、バスルームの数。英国はアメリカのようにお部屋にバスルームをつけるという習慣がなく、日本と同じ１つの家に１つのバスルームが基本（１つ半というのかな、トイレ付きバスルームの他にトイレがついているところが多いですが）で、１つ以上あるのは余程大きなお家か比較的最近になってから改装されたお家です。最近は海外に暮らしてお部屋にバスルームがある生活に慣れた方などが英国に戻ってからお家を改装してバスルーム付きのマスターベッドルームにされる方も多いですが、ホリデー用のお家でもまだまだお部屋の数だけバスルームがあるところは稀なのです。そして、内装も好みなところとなると、なかなかありません。
The first problem is to find a house that has enough bathrooms. Houses in the UK in general don’t have more than 1 bathroom plus extra toilet for a whole house, unlike in the US. Those that have more than 1 are those that are either huge (even then they don’t necessarily have en suites) or have been converted in recent years. I think many people who have lived outside the UK for a while then go back often have their houses converted to have an en suite, but I don’t think they are the majority yet. Even those holiday houses don’t often have many bathrooms in each house let alone a bathroom for each bedroom. Interior is also important to me so it’s really hard to find what I like.
今回やっと見つけたお家は、お部屋が５つあり、それぞれにトイレとバスルーム（お風呂とシャワー両方ついたお部屋が２つ、お風呂はなくシャワーだけのお部屋が３つ）がついていました。ラウンジも広々としていましたし、広いお庭もついていました。今回は、お友達ご夫婦と３日間シェアーし、その後夫の弟夫婦とシェアー（最後の２日は甥っ子とガールフレンドもジョイン）したので予算もなんとかぎりぎり予算内。（その後４、５割上がっています、今の値段だと諦めたかもしれません。）早く決めて予約しておいて良かったです！
This house I found has 5 bedrooms, each en suite. 2 of them have a bath, 3 have just shower (I’m happy with just a shower room). The lounge was very nice and large and it had a huge garden as well. This time, we shared it with a couple friends for 3 days, then with my husband’s brother for a few days (and their son and his girlfriend joined us for the last 2 days) so the cost was just about under the budget. I noticed they put the price up by 40 or 50 % since then, so I’m so glad we booked it early.
バスルームには床暖房がありましたし、ラウンジには暖炉（薪を燃やすタイプとガスタイプと）もありました。シャワールームは広くて水量もたっぷりで（英国ではシャワーの圧力が弱いところが多い）使いやすかったですし、インテリアも好みでした。
Bathrooms had under floor heating, the lounges had fire places (one was real, the other was fake gas one), shower rooms were comfortable size and had good water pressure (so often the pressure is too low in the UK) and the interior was very nice.
オレンジェリーと呼ばれているラウンジ。光がたくさん入って来て、気持ちよい空間でした。（お天気が良くて太陽がさんさんとすると暑すぎましたが。）
What they called “the Orangery” – it was a lovely room with bright lights from everywhere. (It did get too hot, though, when the weather was good during the day.)
キッチンも広くて、素敵でした。
Kitchen was also nice and large and looked lovely.

もう１つダブルのお部屋がこちら。上の２つのお部屋より少し狭いですが、ここも広々としていました。
This room is the last double room. A little smaller than the other 2 but still quite nice and large.
ラウンジはもう１部屋、上の階にもありました。こちらはオレンジェリーに比べてこじんまりとしているので、冬や夜はこちらを使う方がよいかも。薪の暖炉がありました。夕食まではオレンジェリー、食後はこちらでテレビを見たりお話ししたりという使い方をしました。
Another lounge upstairs, smaller and more cosy, so good in winter I think. This one had a real fire. The orangery is lovely when the outside is light, but this one seems nicer after dark. We used the orangery until dinner and then came in here after that and continued chatting with whisky or watched TV.
あと２部屋は写真を撮り忘れてしまいました。どちらもとても可愛らしいお部屋でしたが、屋根裏部屋で狭く収納も余りなかったので、大人が泊まるのにはちょっと厳しい気がします。ラウンジやダイニングテーブルの大きさを考えても、大人５組だと無理とは言わないまでもちょっと窮屈な感じ。３組くらいまでが心地良いのでは、と思いました。
There were 2 more small twin rooms with slanted roofs on the top floor. They were very nicely decorated but very small with little storage so I don’t think suitable for adult couples. With the size of the lounges and dining table etc, this house is very comfortable for 3 couples but a little bit of a squeeze for adult 5 couples, I think.
お庭には、鹿が遊びにきました。朝と夕方何度か見かけましたが、２頭が走って追いかけっこをして遊んでいるように見えました。敷地内にある川から上がってくるようでした。ワイドレンズしか持っていなかったので豆粒のようにしか撮れませんでしたが。。。
We saw 2 deer running around in the garden a few times – in the morning and evening. They seem to come from along the river that runs past the bottom of the garden. I had my wide lens on the camera so couldn’t get good photos, but you can just make them out.
