Thai Dinner In Tokyo With Friends

東京初日、ホテルにチェックインして直ぐに向かったのは、ホテルからすぐのタイ料理のレストラン「アジアンタワン168カレッタ汐留店」。ホテルの方に聞いたら地図を見せてくださって、広場のところをぐるっと周るとありますよと言われたのですが、そのぐるっとの大きさが今ひとつわからず、大回りしすぎてちょっと迷いました。翌日見たら、ホテルを出ると真向かいに見えていて、自分でもなぜ見えなかったのか不思議で笑ってしまった。

On my first day in Tokyo, as soon as I checked in at my hotel, I headed to a Thai restaurant nearby, “Asian Tawan 169 Caretta Shiodome Branch”. I asked one of the hotel staff where it was and she showed me a map and told me to go “around the piazza”. Well, I don’t know why but I didn’t really understand how “around” and I think I went too far around and took me a few minutes before I found the place. On the following morning when I went out of the hotel I saw Caretta right in front of me, not far at all from the hotel. I have no idea why I didn’t see it on the evening before!

この日は一眼レフのカメラを持って行かなかったのでiPhone写真しかなく既にアップしてありますが、お料理について書かなかったので書き留めておきます。写真に左上から下に向かって、もち米が入った可愛い器、えっと。。。何カレーだったか。。。（笑）、エビトースト、レモングラスサラダ、真ん中の上からポークのラーブ、ビーフの炒めものだったかな？。ポークネックのバーベキュー、一番右の上から春雨とシーフードの煮物、お誕生日が近かったお友達へのバースデーケーキ（もうお１人がもうすぐマレーシアに発たれるというので行ってらっしゃいのプレートとわたしへの東京へようこそのプレートもありました）。

I didn’t take my big camera with me to the restaurant so all the photos were taken with my iPhone and have already been uploaded but I didn’t write about what we had. From the left top going down, cute containers with sticky rice, some sort of curry (I cannot remember… it wasn’t green or red or yellow curry), prawn toasts, lemon grass salad. The middle top, mince pork salad, stir-fried beef with ginger (I think…), then BBQ pork neck. Then top right is glass noodle with seafood, a birthday cake (as one of them was having her birthday soon – but they also put message plates for one of them who is leaving for KL soon and also for me to welcome me to Tokyo).

と、こんな感じ。ラーブの味付けがちょっと甘すぎるなと思ったもののそれでも美味しかったですし、他もどれも美味しくいただきました。エビトーストはちょっとパンチにかける感じでしたが、日本人向けにアレンジされているのかも。シェフもサービスの方も、タイの方のようでした。いくつかリクエストもしましたが、以前タイにお住いだった方が色々オーダーしてくださったので、普段あまりオーダーしないものもいただけました。

Mince pork salad was a little too sweet but it was still good and everything else was very tasty. Prawn toasts, to me, needed a little extra oomph but again it was still good. Maybe they change the taste a little for Japanese. The chef and the rest of the staff seemed to be mostly from Thailand. The friend who had lived in Thailand ordered for us so there were some dishes that are not so widly known, which was great.

全員で６人の集まりで、これ以上人数が増えると話が度々分かれてしまってあまりお話できない方が出てきてしまうと思いますが、ぎりぎり全員とお話出来る大きさのグループでした。最後の日のお料理教室以外でこの日が一番大人数の集まりでしたが、みなさんとちゃんとお話できた気がするので良かったです。

It was 6 people including me, any more and we wouldn’t be able to talk to everyone, it was just the maximum number when everyone can talk to everyone else. I’m glad that I felt I properly had a catch up with everyone.

比較的最近シンガポールから本帰国されたと思っていた方は、もうそれから１年半も経っていたそうですし、５年くらいお目にかかっていなかった方もおられましたし、どなたともかなり久しぶりでした。東京でわたしと会うなんて不思議な感じがするとみなさんおっしゃっていたのですが、わたしの方は反対にシンガポールで皆さんに会っているような、普段の続きのような、そんな気もして、やはり不思議な感覚でした。ご一緒した中にマレーシアに転勤が決まって近いうちにお引越しされる方がおられました。マレーシアは近いので、遊びに来てくださるのではと期待しています。

Even the friend who left Singapore relatively recently has already been back for a year and a half, and I hadn’t met one of them for 5 years but it didn’t feel that way. They all said it felt strange to be with me in Tokyo, but for me, it felt as if we were in Singapore and we have been getting together often! Strange feelings. One of them is leaving for KL soon, hopefully she can visit Singapore as KL is very close.

美味しいタイ料理をいただきながらおしゃべりしているうちに、あっという間に１０時でした。この日は春とは思えない寒い日で、雨も降っていて、奥多摩では雪だとの報道でした。わたしは歩いて数分のホテルに滞在していましたが、みなさんはそれから電車で寒い中ご帰宅。寒い中、雨が降る中、来てくださってありがとうございました。本当に楽しい、あっという間のひと時でした。

The time flew very fast while we were chatting and having good Thai food. It was such a cold day, unusually so, and was raining. I saw that it snowed heavily in north part of Tokyo. I was staying very near but others had to go home a bit further in the cold rain! I am thankful that they all made time to see me, it was such a lovely evening.
