イギリスにはお庭があるお家に住む人が多く緑も多いので、普通のスーパーでも野鳥に食べさせる餌が売られています。今の家に入ってきたときも前に住まれていた方がが野鳥用の木の家と餌を入れるフィーダー、お水を入れる入れ物が残されていました。せっかくなので野鳥用に売られているひまわりの種を入れてみたらしばらくは全然餌を取りに来なかったですが、最近やっと食べに来るように急に餌が減っています。１つだけでなくいくつかフィーダーが欲しいなと思っていましたし、少し離れているとどんな鳥かよく見えないので望遠鏡も欲しいと思っていました。望遠鏡は古いのがありますがあまりよくないものなので、もう少し良いものが欲しかったのです。
野鳥に詳しいお友達にお聞きしたところ、長い間ボランティアをされていたRSBP（The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds : 王立鳥類保護協会）のものがお勧めとのこと。ちょうど昨日パブでメールのお返事を読んでいたのですが、うちから一番近いのはPulborough Brooks reserve のお店だと書かれていて、丁度パブから車で１０分ほどの距離だったので行ってみました。
In England many people live in a house with a garden and they like feeding wild birds, so you can get bird feed even in an ordinary supermarket. When we moved into our house, the previous owner had left a bird house, a feeder and a water plate for wild birds on the back wall of the house facing the garden. We put some sunflower seeds in the feeder and we finally started to see little birds picking at them recently. We wanted to have more feeders and also wanted a good pair of binoculars so we can see what the little birds look like more clearly when they are on a tree near the back fence. We do have an old pair of binoculars but they are a bit rubbish.
I asked a few questions to a friend who used to do volunteer work at the RSBP and knows a lot about wild birds. When I read her reply, which told me that our nearest shop would be at Pulborough Brooks Reserve, we were in a pub having lunch and as it turned out only about 10 minutes from there, so we decided to pop in and get a few things there after lunch.

お店の外の景色。春にはウグイスもたくさん来るそうです。（日本のウグイスとは全然違う鳴き声のようです。）

野鳥のことは何も知らないので何を揃えれば良いのかもわからないのですが、色々な種がミックスされた餌とフィーダー（重い鳥やリスなどが乗ると蓋が閉まってしまう仕組みになっています）、脂のケーキ（冬はこういうものを好むらしい）、望遠鏡、野鳥の本を買ってきました。
We know almost nothing about wild birds so had no idea what we should get, but we got a bag of mixed seeds, one feeder (the hole closes when a heavier bird or a squirrel sits on the perch), suet bars, a book of wild birds in Britain and a new pair of binoculars.
あまりカラフルな鳥はいないようですが、色々来てくれると良いな〜。
It doesn’t look like there are many colourful birds here, but I hope many different kinds of birds will visit our garden.
これからもしかしたらリスも来るのかも？

夫の実家でも裏庭を臨むテーブルの上にやっぱり双眼鏡と野鳥の本が置いてあって…とても懐かしい。
狭い狭い我が家も小さなバードフィーダーを置いていたのだけど、交流のないご近所さんが「車にフンが！」と文句言いに来て、撤去したの。
庭に直接餌をこっそり撒いてるけどね（笑）。
お店のバードフィーダーのディスプレイにモグラの土盛りがちょっと可愛い♡

グレーの大きなのですけど。
ブラウンの小さなのは可愛いけれど、グレーの子は微妙。
鳥の餌も取ってしまうので
リス避けのカゴみたいなのをつけたりするようです。

ここにも鳩には来て欲しくないけど来ます。
ハリネズミの家や餌も売ってるんです。
リスは嫌がられるみたいだけれど
ハリネズミは人気みたい。
でも、ハリネズミに来て欲しければ工夫しないと
柵があると入って来れないみたいですけど。
イギリスは日本や香港やシンガポールに比べて
不便なことも色々ありますけど
これまでなかった楽しみもあって楽しいです。
