昨日の夕食のチキンがたくさんで食べきれなかったので、チキンカツサンドにして今日ランチにいただきました。調味料はマヨネーズととんかつソース、他にロメインレタスの細切りをのせただけですが、今朝焼いたパンのお陰もありとても美味しかったです。
ちなみに、頑張って荷物を片付けていたとき、時々スーパーでサンドイッチを買ってお昼をすませていましたが、その時に目に止まったのがチキンカツサンドでした。しかも、英語で Chicken Katsu Sando （Sandwitch ではなく、Sando というのが面白すぎる、英国の日人はこれをなんだと思っているのか気になります）と書かれていました。内容は薄いチキンカツとカレー風味のコールスローだったと思います。英国の日本っぽい（決して本物の和食ではないです）食事を出す Wagamama というチェーン店がありますが、そこのチキンカツカレーがとても人気ですし、スーパーでもパックの入ってチキンカツカレーのソースというのが売られていて興味ふかいのですが、そこからチキンカツといえばカレー味になるのかな、と想像します。英国にお住いの方たちのブログにマークス＆スペンサーズのチキンカツサンドが美味しいと書かれていたのを見かけたので探して見ましたが見つかりませんでした、多分しばらく前にはあったのだと思います。わたしたちが食べていたのはウェイトローズのものでした。日本のカツサンドとは全くの別物でしたが、結構美味しかったです。
There was a lot of chicken for the dinner last night, so we used the leftover chicken katsu (cutlet – do people know this word “katsu” is from “cutlet” in a Japanese way?) for Chicken Katsu Sando. Seasoning was Japanese mayonnaise and Japanese Tonkatsu sauce and all I added was shredded romaine lettuce, but it was yummy! The bread was delicious, too, because we baked it at home.
When we were working hard at unpacking the boxes after moving in, we used to get “chicken katsu sando” from Waitrose for lunch now and again. I find it very interesting and funny that it says Katsu Sando – which in Japanese means Cutlet Sandwich. I think it had very thinly sliced chicken cutlet and curry flavoured coleslaw. In Wagamama, which is a chain restaurant that serves Japanese-like (definitely NOT real Japanese taste), they serve chicken katsu curry. I’m afraid I didn’t like it at all, it really is very far from the real thing, but I know it’s very popular here and I see ready made “chicken katsu curry sauce” in supermarkets so I’m guessing these are the reasons why they would flavour coleslaw with curry (but I have a feeling it was more like Thai curry flavour than Japanese). I’ve read in a few blogs of Japanese people living in the UK saying how “chicken katsu sando” from Marks & Spencers is delicious so we looked for it but never found it. These blog posts I read were written a while ago so I guess they don’t make them anymore.
