数週間前からお友達ご夫婦と「Arundel Castle & Gardens」（アランデル城）に行こうと話していたのですが、この１週間ほどお天気があまり良くなく雨が多かったのでお友達と相談しつつ、数日前に天気予報でお天気が良さそうだった今日行くことに決めました。明日もまた雨になるようですが、今日は予報通りとても良いお天気で、気温は１５度前後で暑くもなく寒くもなく、（長袖のシャツの上にスエットを着ている状態で）風が吹くと少し寒い、陽が射しているところを歩くと暖かい、という感じのぶらぶら歩きに最適なお天気でした。

We’ve been talking with our friend couple about visiting Arundel Castle & Gardens together for a few weeks but the weather hasn’t been very good for the last one week or so with lots of rain so we needed to keep our eye on the weather forecast, and we decided to go today a few days ago because the forecast looked good.  Fortunately the forecast was correct, it was a beautiful day today, about 15C during the day so it was a little chilly when there was some breeze in the shade but quite warm when you walk in the sun – the best kind of weather for a leisurely walk.

わたしたちは小さな村に住んでいて、ここから一番近い町が Arundel という町になります。車で１０分かからないところにある、中世の雰囲気が残る素敵なマーケットタウンです。ロックダウンになってからは行っていませんでしたが、引っ越してきたころはよく Arundel のカフェでランチをしたり、デリでお買い物をしていました。その小さな町の小高い丘の上に建っているのがこのアランデル城です。結構離れた更に小高いところまで行かないとお城はよく見えないのですが、中に入ると外から見るより随分大きな敷地で大きなお城です。１１世紀に建てられた１０００年近い歴史を持つお城。イングランドの内戦で大きな被害を受け１７１８年以降何度か修復されていますが、今の姿に修復されたのは１９００年のことだそう。お庭も手入れが行き届いていて、たくさんのお花が咲いていて、とても素敵でした。

We live in a small village but the closest town is Arundel, it takes less than 10 minutes for us to get there by car.  Arundel is a lovely little medieval market town with beautiful old buildings and we love it.  We hadn’t been there since lockdown (my husband has a couple of times just for shopping) but we used to go there for lunch in a little cafe or to do a little shopping in a deli.  Arundel Castle is on top of the hill in this town.  You cannot see much of the castle unless you get quite far on top of a higher hill but both the grounds and the castle itself are much larger than you expect from outside.  The castle was built in the 11th Century so it has a history of 1000 years.  It had a great damage during the Civil War and was restored and remodelled a few times since 1718 but the current features were built in 1900.  The gardens looked beautiful with lots of flowers and are very well looked after.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

最初にお庭をぶらぶら歩いて周り、その後お城の中の公開部分を見て歩いてちょうど２時間くらいでした。

Including walking inside the castle, (only some parts are open to the public), it took us almost exactly 2 hours to walk leisurely while we chatted to do some catching up with each other.
