昨夜は朝方まですごい風が吹いて怖かったですが、幸い我が家は被害はない模様です。竹が２本か３本倒れているのと小鳥のフィーダーが少し回っているくらい。正面玄関のドアのリースも無事でした。

The wind was very strong last night but there hasn’t been any damage to our house, just a few bamboos broken and the bird feeder seems to have turned a little but that is all I can see.  The wreath on the main door is still good, too.

夫がお仕事をしていたときはクリスマス休暇が本当に待ち遠しかったものですし、去年は大好きなホテルに泊まっていたので特別感がありましたが、今年はこんな状況でお友達や家族にも会えないので、クリスマスの実感があまりない気がします。クリスマスディナーを食べてプレゼントを開けたりしたクリスマス当日はそれなりにそんな気分も味わえましたが、昨日からはいつもと変わらない感じ。

When my husband was working, Christmas holiday was very special.  Last year we were staying at our favourite hotel from Christmas Eve so it felt a little special, too.  However, this year, we aren’t seeing any friends or family so it doesn’t feel that special to be honest.  On Christmas day, having had the Christmas dinner and opening presents it felt Christmassy but back to normal now.  The only thing is that my husband doesn’t have to get up early until sometime in early January – for several weeks he’s been getting up early so he can let in the people who have been working on the renovation, they were coming before 8:00am.  My husband was grumbling that he had to get up nearly as early as when he was working.

そうそう、我が家はツリーも他のクリスマスの飾りも１月６日前後まで飾っています。クリスマスの飾りというのは本来そういうものなのです。ヨーロッパでも国によって違うと思いますが、２６日に片付けるところはないと思います。香港に住んでいた時にたまたま日本人の奥様たちの会話を耳にしたことがあり、「香港っていつまでもクリスマスの飾りを飾ってるよね〜。」とそれがいけないことのようにおっしゃっていたのですが、香港はイギリスの伝統を受け継いでいるのと、旧正月がもっと先なのでクリスマスの飾りを長く残しているのです。夫はいつも日本人や他のアジアの国で２６日に（または２５日が終わらないうちに）ツリーを撤去してしまうことにとても違和感があるようでした。日本でクリスマスの飾りを翌日以降残していることをだらしないことのように言われますが、夫から見ると日本の方が１月２日にお正月のお飾りを取り払ってしまうのを見るのと同じような感覚なのだと思います。日本でもお正月の飾りはしばらく出していますよね。日本はお正月の用意があるのでクリスマスのものは早く片付けてしまうのでしょうし、日本にはクリスマスの伝統もなく商業的なものなので早く片付けてお正月の用意をした方がすっきりすると思うのでそれはそれで良いと思いますが、クリスマスの飾りを「すぐに片付けなくてはいけない」、ということではないと思います。日本に住んでいた時は、我が家はしばらく両方出してた期間がありました。それぞれのお好みで良いのではと思います。

Talking about Christmas, in Japan, people seem to think it’s lazy not to put the Christmas decorations away on the 26th – isn’t it funny?  Japanese in general like having “rules” and many of them follow them religiously, so you are criticised if you don’t, and they seem to believe you have to put them away as soon as Christmas Day is over.   I once overheard a conversation of a few Japanese ladies in Hong Kong saying how lazy people were there because they don’t put away Christmas decorations after the 26th.  I wanted to explain to them that it’s not “lazy”, it’s the way British (and many other) people do – but I couldn’t as they weren’t my friends.  There is no religious background or tradition for Christmas in Japan, New Year is much more important there, so they decorate their houses, department stores, streets etc for the New Year as soon as Christmas is over (and of course there are many people who don’t celebrate Christmas at all).  We’ve even seen some Christmas trees taken down on the 25th in some Asian country, where Christmas doesn’t mean much.  When we were living in Kobe, we used to keep the Christmas decorations until around the 6th January but also put out some New Year decorations, I didn’t mind having both at the same time.

今日のディナーは、チリコンカーニ。シャンツァイを切らしているのが残念。チリコンカーニは結婚した当初は Delia Smith のレシピで作っていたのですが、メキシコ料理に使われるいろいろな唐辛子が入らないので複雑な味にならないのが不満で、チリコンカーニ用のスパイスミックスを使ってそこに更にクミンシードやクミンパウダー、シャンツァイなどを足して作っています。今回はいつものメーカーのスパイスパウダーがなかったので仕方なく違うものを買ってみたところ、コーンスターチが多いのかとろみがつきすぎたのと辛さを含めスパイスが足りなく感じ、結構クミンやカイエンペッパーなどをたくさん足し、先日買ってみたアンチョというドライのメキシコ料理に使われるチリも使ってみました。辛さは少し足りなかったのですが、味は美味しくなりました。

Today’s dinner was Chilli Con Carne.  Sadly we didn’t have any coriander leaves at home.  In the beginning of our married life, I used to make Chilli Con Carne following Delia Smith’s recipe but I felt the flavour wasn’t very complex.  Then I started using those Chilli powder mix packets because they contain some Mexican chillis and I find they give more depth.  I add things like cumin seeds, cumin powder, coriander leaves and cayenne pepper to that and it tastes better than not using any chilli powder mix.  This time I wasn’t able to get the mix I always use so had to get a different brand.  I guess it contains more cornstarch or flour and made the chilli extra thick.  I also thought it didn’t have as much spices as the other one so added some more spices like cumin, cayenne pepper etc than usual.  I thought I should have added even a bit more cayenne pepper but the flavour was very good.
