いよいよ今日から４月ですね！春爛漫、なはずが、イギリスは寒いです！（東京も寒かったみたいですね。）最低気温１度、最高気温９度、一時雪が降りました。太陽が出てあまり風がないとそれほど寒くないのですが、太陽が隠れて風が吹くと真冬の寒さ。風が強いので雲が流れるのが早くて、本当にコロコロとお天気が変わりました。

It’s April!  It must be spring – but it’s very cold here!  (I think Tokyo also had a very cold day yesterday.)  The lowest temperature where we were was 1C, the highest was 9C, we even had some snow.  It doesn’t feel so cold when the sun is out and there is no wind, but once the sun is behind the clouds and it blows, it is very cold.  It was very windy today so the clouds moved fast – so the weather kept changing.

ランチの後、車ですぐのところにある「Winkworth Arboretum」（ウィンクワース森林公園）に行きましたが、お昼前にパブに向かって走っている時には太陽が燦々と輝いていたかと思えば急に曇って雪がちらつき、すぐまた太陽が出て、また曇って。パブに着いたときはとても寒かったのですが、ランチを終えて外に出ると太陽が出て暖かく、やれやれ、良かったと思っていたら植物園に着く頃にはまた暗く冷たい風が吹いていました。そんな感じで一日中、太陽が顔を出したり雲に覆われたり、雪がちらついたり。

So, after lunch, we wen to “Winkworth Arboretum”, which was just a few minutes by car from the pub, where we ate.  When we were driving on the way to the pub, at one moment it was very sunny and warm, then suddenly got dark and it started snowing.  Then the sun came out, then the clouds….  When we got to the pub, it was quite grey and cold but after lunch when we came out, it felt much warmer and sunny, then we we arrived at the Arboretum it was again dark and cold and windy.  That was how it was most of the day.

 

森林植物園では、義弟夫婦はすぐに駐車場でウォーキングブーツに履き替えていたのですが、わたしと夫は普通に歩くには問題のないブーツを履いていたので「大丈夫だよね、このままでいいよね。」と履き替えなかったのです。ところが、中に入って見てびっくり、結構急な山道を降ることに。こんなことなら履き替えれば良かったね〜（いつも車に積んであります）、とちょっと恐々降りました。幸い、怖かったのはそこだけで、あとはそれほどでもなく、履いていたブーツで問題なく歩けました。

At the car park of the arboretum, my brother-in-law and his wife were changing their shoes to walking boots, but my husband and I decided not to bother as we were wearing comfortable light boots and we thought they should be OK.  However, almost as soon as we got into the arboretum and started to walk, we realised we had made a mistake because it wasn’t the nice flat place we were expecting, we had to walk down a quite steep and bumpy hill like mountain walking!  Fortunately, once we got through that part, it wasn’t too bad at all so it was OK, but walking boots would have been better.

急な坂道を降りてしばらく歩くと湖があり、観測小屋のようなものがあったので少し中に入り、そのあと湖の側を途中まで歩いたところで階段を上がって、ちょっと休憩。

After coming down the hill, there was a lake and a little hut for observation, I think, so we went inside first, then walked a little further, then went up the steps.

 

 

 

 

森林植物園なので主に木が植わっているところで、お花はそれほどはありませんでしたが、それでも水仙や桜や木蓮や石楠花などところどころに咲いていました。

As it is an arboretum, it’s mostly to see the trees but there were some flowers like daffodils, cherry trees with blossoms, magnolias, rhododendrons etc.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

歩いた歩数は大体３キロ弱、４０００歩程度。湖の周りを一周することもできるようですが、今日は途中から上に登りました。ちょうど入り口に戻り着いた頃に太陽が出て暖かくて気持ち良かったのでカフェでお茶を買って外で飲んだのですが、カフェの中でお茶を買っているうちに曇ってしまい、外でお茶を飲んでいる時にはまた雪がちらついていました（笑）。雪が降った時間は短くて量も大した量ではないのですが、それでも一時期は雪らしい雪でした。

We walked a little less than 3km, about 4000 steps.  We could have walked around the lake but today we didn’t.  When we were back to the entrance area, the sun was out and it was quite pleasant so we bought tea in the cafe and had it at a table outside – but while we were buying the tea the sun disappeared again and while we were having the tea it snowed a little again.  The amount of snow we had wasn’t much, it snowed only for a few minutes to 10 minutes, but at one point it snowed properly.

 

最初の５分くらい（雪の中、急な坂道を降っているとき）はどうなることかと思いましたが雪は一時期でしたし、雨は降らず、時々は太陽も顔を出してくれていたので楽しく歩けました。秋には湖の周りの木々が紅葉するそうなので、是非またその時期に行ってみたいですし、四季それぞれに様子が変わって楽しめるところだと思います。

I was thinking we were mad walking down a slope in snow in the first five minutes or so, but the snow didn’t last long, it never rained and now and again the sun came out so it was actually enjoyable to walk there.  Apparently, the trees around the lake change colours in autumn so we’d love to go and see them.  These places look different in different season so it’s worth going several times a year.
