宿泊先のホテルのWi-Fiがとても遅くてブログの更新は出来ませんでしたが、今日、無事に家に戻りました。
The Wi-Fi at the hotel in Devon was so slow that I wasn’t able to blog in the last couple of days, but we are back home safely now.
今回のデボン州への旅行は、実は、４０年も昔にイギリスに語学留学をしたときにお世話になったホストファミリーのホストマザー、わたしが「イギリスのお母さん」とずっと呼んで来た方が先月１５日に亡くなり、昨日のお葬式に出席するためでした。来週、９０歳になるところでしたが、残念ながらその少し前に亡くなってしまいました。たまたま、わたしがイギリス人と結婚して毎年のようにイギリスに来ていたので、ほぼ毎年会うことが出来ましたし、香港にも２度遊びに来てくれましたし、イギリスでのホリデーで家を借りたときに泊まりに来てくれたりとたくさん一緒の時間を過ごしました。残念ながらこの１５年ほどはあまり健康状態が良くなく旅行も出来なかったので、年に１度くらいエクセターに会いに行って数時間一緒に過ごすことくらいしか出来なくなりましたが、いつもたくさん笑わせてくれる明るい人でした。この数年は歩くことも出来なくなって大変そうでしたが、それでも会えばいつもと変わらないおしゃべりで楽しませてくれました。「イギリスのお母さん」の娘さんはわたしより１歳だけ年下ですが耳が不自由なので、子育ても大変だったと思います、でもいつも明るい人でした。度々会っていたわけではないので、もう、エクセターのあのお家にいないというのが信じられないような変な気持ちです。
This trip to Devon this time was to attend a funeral of my “English Mum”, who was the mother of the host family that I stayed with when I lived in Exeter 40 years ago to learn English, and since then we have kept close contact with each other. She passed away on the 15th of last month. She would have become 90 next week. As I happened to marry an Englishman, I was able to come to England nearly every year and see her every year, she also came to Hong Kong twice and stayed with us at a holiday house we rented a few times when we visited England on holidays. She hasn’t been well enough to travel in the last 15 years or so but we did visit her nearly every year to spend a few hours and she was always very chatty and made us laugh a lot. She wasn’t able to walk in the last few years, which must’ve been very tough for her, but she was still in general cheerful and funny. Her daughter, who is a year younger than me, is deaf so bringing her up must’ve been tough, too, but she was always positive. As we weren’t seeing her all the time, I still find it hard to believe that she isn’t in that house in Exeter…
今回宿泊した、わたしたちが大好きな Gidleigh Park Hotel は何度か食事を一緒にしたり、アフタヌーンティーをした思い出がたくさんあるホテルで、「イギリスのお母さん」も会うと良くこのホテルの話をしていましたので、滞在中は夫と「イギリスのお母さん」の話をたくさんしました。
Gidleigh Park Hotel, where we stayed at again this time, is also a special place in terms of our memories of her, she joined us there for dinner a few times, as well as an afternoon tea on one or two occasions and she would often talk about this hotel when we met her, so my husband and I talked about her a lot while we were there this time.
お葬式では娘さんの様子が心配でしたが、思っていたよりずっとしっかりとしていて安心しました。お孫さんお２人、ひ孫ちゃん（一番下が６歳）３人を含めて、大好きな家族、長年のご友人の方達と一緒にお見送りが出来て良かったです。辛いこともたくさんあった人生だったと思いますが、思い浮かぶのは笑顔。
I was quite worried about her daughter at the funeral as she is very emotional, but she was being very strong and I felt she is going to be OK. I am glad that we were able to see her off with her families including her 2 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren as well as her close friends. I know she had a lot of heartaches and tough times but whenever I think of her her big smile is what I see.

今回のお部屋。

お部屋からの景色、見づらいですが、遠くにヘリコプターが見えます。翌日、たまたまお部屋から外を見ていたら、ちょうど飛び立つ。時々、ヘリコプターで来るお客さんがおられます。
The view from our room. It’s hard to see but you can see a helicopter in the field, we saw it leaving on the following morning. We do see their clients come and go in a helicopter sometimes.
８月と言うのに寒くて、暖炉に火を入れるほどでした。お天気が良くないこともあって、この数日、最高気温が１７度くらいと、肌寒いです。
Yes, it was cold enough to use the fireplace in the lounge. I cannot believe it’s August. As the weather hasn’t been good, it’s been quite cold, the highest temperature is about 17C,
