今日は２週間に１度に刺繍の集まりの日だったので、その前にアランデルの「Cockburns Tea Room」でランチをしました。１年近く前に２度ほど行ったことがありますが、１度目は刺繍の集まりでのアフタヌーンティー、２度目は夫とお友達ご夫婦とお茶だけで、ランチをしたのは今回が初めてでした。写真を撮り忘れましたが、昔からあるトラディショナルなイギリスらしいティールームで、わたしは結構好きです。
It was the day of the embroidery gathering this afternoon, we have a gathering every two weeks or so, and I go there with my friend, who lives next-door. Before the gathering. we had lunch at “Cockburns Tea Room” in Arundel. I’d been there twice so far, once for Christmas Afternoon Tea about a year ago and another time just for tea with my husband and our friends. I forgot to take a photo but it’s a very traditional-looking (old fashioned in a nice way) English tearoom, I quite like it.
最初、わたしは West Sussex Rarebit （チーズオントーストのようなもの）をオーダーし、お友達はトーストしたツナサンドをオーダーされ、あれこれおしゃべりしながらランチが来るのを待っていたのですが、しばらくするとお部屋の電気が全部消えました。あらら、と言っていたらすぐまた点いたのですが、また１、２秒後に消え、それを１０分くらい繰り返していたでしょうか。スタッフの方が来られて、電気のトラブルで温かいお料理をお出しすることが出来ません、ツナサンドのパンはトーストしてありますがレアビットは作れなくなりました、とのこと。仕方ないので、ベーコン、アボカド、トマトのサンドイッチをオーダーしました。ベーコンは事前に焼いてあるものなので大丈夫とのことでした。
First, my friend ordered a toasted tuna sandwich and I ordered West Sussex Rarebit, and we were chatting away waiting for the food to come, then all the lights in the room went off. They were turned back on immediately but then went off again – this was repeated many times for about 10 minutes, then one of the staff came to let us know that they could not serve anything warm from then on but my friend’s sandwich bread was already toasted. So I ordered Bacon Avocado & Tomato sandwich instead – and I was told they can use some bacon which was cooked in advance.
全くお塩をしていないサンドイッチで、ベーコンもほとんど塩気がないものだったのでそのままではあまり味がなかったのですが、少しだけお塩をすると美味しくいただけました。添えてあったポテトサラダはちゃんと塩胡椒してあって美味しかったですし、添えてあったトマトも珍しく（というのはイギリスのパブやカフェで添えてあるトマトは味がないことが多いのです）美味しかったです。
The sandwich had no seasoning and the bacon wasn’t salty at all so it didn’t have much taste but I sprinkled a little salt and it was quite enjoyable. The potato salad on the side was nicely seasoned and tasty. Even the tomatoes were very tasty, which doesn’t happen here often, I find tomatoes in cafe and pubs here are mostly tasteless.
缶入りのガス入りのお水とサンドイッチで12ポンド（2253円）！日本の倍ですね。いやいや、日本と比べては行けません、日本の値段は忘れましょう。イギリスでは、決して高くはないお値段です。
Including a tin of sparkling water it was 12 pounds per person. About a double of what it would be in Japan. I must forget the prices in Japan and stop comparing, it doesn’t do me any good! It’s not expensive in England at all.
