今日も一時期少しだけ明るかったですが、お昼頃からあとは曇っていて雨がぱらついたり。

It was a bit brighter earlier in the day but from around lunch time it was very cloudy with some rain.

今日は、夫の弟夫婦とChiddingfoldの我が家から４、５０分の距離にある「The Mulberry Inn 」でキャッチアップのランチをしました。外から見た印象よりも中は結構広かったです。

We had a catch up lunch with my husband’s brother and his wife at “The Mulberry Inn” in Chiddingfold, which is 40 or 50 minutes from us.  It was larger inside than we thought from looking outside.

 

 

メニューには所謂普通のパブ料理もありましたが、レバノン料理がたくさん並んでいました。わたしと夫は伝統的なレバノンの前菜プレート Mezze Platterをシェアー（２人分の盛り合わせなのでシェアーが基本）。フムス、ババガヌーシュ、チーズのフィロ包み、キベ（ひきわり小麦にスパイスなど入れてまとめて揚げたもの）、トマトソース、ニンニクやハーブが入ったヨーグルトソース、ピクルス、フラットブレッドの盛り合わせ。どれも美味しく、特にフムスとババガヌーシュは美味しかったでs。ただ、全体に塩分が強めなところにフラットブレッドにもお塩がしてあるのでちょっとしょっぱかったです。

They have usual pub food as well but also have a lot of Lebanese food.  My husband and I shared “Traditional Lebanese Mezze Platter for two” (Hummus, Babaganoush, Kibbeh, Cheese Bourak, Tomato Salsa, Mint & Yogurt Dip & Flat Bread).  They were all good, especially the Hummus & Babaganoush, but they were all seasoned a little more than I like and the bread was also salty so a bit too salty overall.

 

義弟は、カマンベールのフライとチャツネ。義妹は前菜なし。

My brother-in-law had breaded and deep-fried camembert with chutney.  His wife didn’t have any starter.

 

義弟とわたしはメインにチキンんのシャワルマをオーダーしました。ロケットのサラダ、チップス（フライドポテト）、ガーリックマヨネーズ、トマトソースがついてきます。お味はまぁまぁでしたが、チキンがぱっさぱさで。。。（涙）。義弟は完食していたので美味しかったのだと思います。多分、イギリスの人はパサパサのチキンを食べ慣れているので、気にならないのだと思います。（でも、お友達のお家でいただくチキンはドライでなく美味しいので、不思議です。）日本人にはパサパサのチキンはね。。。わたしは、フラットブレッドにチキンを包んで小さなのを４口くらいいただきましたが、まぁ、ほとんど残してしまいました。前菜でお腹が膨れていましたしね。

For the Mains my brother-in-law and I both had Chicken Shwarma, which came with rocket salad, chips, garlic mayonnaise & tomato sauce.  The chicken tasted OK but it was too dry to me, I wasn’t able to eat much.  I think I had about 4 tiny pieces of bread, with a tiny bit of chicken with each piece of bread, but I found it quite unpleasant because of the texture.  My brother-in-law finished it so I guess he enjoyed it.  I think English people are used to dry chicken as 90% of chicken I’ve had outside the home has been very dry (but not when I have chicken at our friends’ so I don’t quite get it….,this is a huge mystery to me).  I was quite full from the starter, though.

 

義妹は、シーバス。付け合わせはインゲンとクラッシュしたポテト、ソースはロブスタービスク。

My sister-in-law had Seabass with green beans and crushed potato and a lobster bisque.

 

夫は、ラムのコフタ。まぁ普通、だったそうです。

My husband had lamb kofta.  He said it was OK but nothing special.

 

デザートは、義弟夫婦はそれぞれにクランブル、アイスクリーム添え。なんのクランブルだったのか。。。赤いベリー？

To finish my brother-in-law and his wife each had Crumble with ice cream.  I cannot remember what crumble, red berries?

 

わたしと夫は、ピーカンパイをシェアしたのですが、このピーカンパイが食べたことのないタイプで、生地は全くかりっとしていなくてしなしな、ピーカンの下の生地はぶよぶよ。生焼け？これは、ピーカンパイじゃないよね、といういことで夫がスタッフにクレームしたところ、こういうレシピだと。一口味を見てあとは手をつけなかったので、この分はお会計から引いてくださいました。

My husband and I shared a Pecan Pie – but it was a very strange pecan pie.  The pie crust was totally soft and the filling under the pecan nuts had a very strange texture like uncooked custard.  I thought it maybe hadn’t been cooked through.  My husband asked one of the staff if it was how it was supposed to be and we were told that it was.  We had just one small taste each and left the rest because it was very unpleasant – but to be fair they didn’t charge for it when the bill came.

戻ってきてからピーカンパイのレシピを検索したら、BBC Food のピーカンパイのレシピのページに固まらないとかスープみたいだというコメントがいくつもあり、レシピには３０分とあるが１時間半焼いたらやっと焼けたというコメントもあるので、生焼けだったのかも。

When I searched for peacan pie recipes online, I found the recipe on BBC Food has lots of comments saying it doesn’t set or it’s like soup.  I also saw some comment saying they cooked more than double the time the recipe says then it did set.  Maybe it needed longer baking.

 

 

ガス入りのお水１本、わたしはお水だけ。夫と義弟はビール、義妹は　　　、最後に義弟がエスプレッソ１杯で１組（２人）73ポンドずつ（１３８００円）、イギリスでは平均的なお値段かな、と思います。前菜の Mezze のディップ２種類は美味しいと思いました。他は、まぁまぁ、チキンもピーカンパイもわたしには美味しくなかったです。２度目はないと思います。

We shared a bottle of sparkling water, my husband and his brother had beer, his brother also had espresso after the meal and it was £73 per couple.  I guess it’s sort of average.  I thought the 2 dips in the mezze platter were very good but others were either just OK.  The chicken was to me not nice at all and I actually found the pecan pie inedible.

 

ということで、ランチはちょっと残念でしたが、義弟夫婦とのキャッチアップは楽しかったです。

So I didn’t enjoy my lunch  very much but it was lovey to catch up with my husband’s brother and his wife.
