今日は、インスタグラムでお知り合いになった日本人の方と初めましてのランチをしました。ご提案くださった、「The Cornish Bakery」というカフェで。The Cornish Bakery はチェーン店でチチェスターにもあるのですが、まだ入ったことはありませんでした。間口はあまり広くないのですが奥行きがあって、思っていたよりずっと広かったです。クロワッサンなどのペーストリー系のものとコーニッシュ・パスティ系とバーガー風のものなどが並んでいて、せっかくコーニッシュ・ベーカリーなのでクラッシックと書かれた伝統的なパスティにしようかと思ったのですが、お肉が不安で、結局「スパイシー・カリフラワーとオニオン・バージ」（ヴィーガン）というパスティにしました。

I had a lunch with a Japanese lady whom I got to know through Instagram, for the first time in Lewes today.  At her suggestion we met “The Cornish Bakery” in Lewes.  The Cornish Bakery is a chain cafe and there is one in Chichester, too, but I haven’t been there yet so I didn’t know what sort of a cafe it was.  The entrance isn’t very wide but the space goes quite far back inside and it looked quite spacious. They have various pastries like croissant, various pasties and a couple of burgers.  Since the name of the cafe is Cornish Bakery, I was thinking of getting a “Classic” pasty but was a little worried if the meat would be very tough or dry or gamy, so in the end I took Spicy Cauliflower & Onion Bahji Pasty (which was actually Vegan).

これがその、ヴィーガン・パスティ。すごく大きくて食べられるのかと思いましたが思っていたより軽く、フィリングも美味しくて、全く問題なく完食しました。

This is that Vegan Pasty.  It looked huge and I was wondering if I would be able to finish it, but once I started eating it it wasn’t as heavy as I thought and the filling was very tasty, and before I knew it I’d finished it.

人見知りなので（これでも海外に住むようになってから随分ましになりました）お目にかかるまで緊張していましたが、あれこれお話ししているとあっという間に２時間経っていました。日本の方とお話しするのはとても久しぶりで、時々日本語が出てこなかったり（笑）。気軽に会える距離ではないのが残念ですが（距離的にはそうでもないのですが電車だと２時間以上かかってしまいます、イギリスの電車は不便）、せっかくのご縁なので、このご縁が続くと良いなと思っています。

I’m not very good with talking to new people in general (but much better now than before we moved out of Japan) so I was nervous before meeting her, but once we started talking we hardly stopped and 2 hours were gone very quickly.  Sometimes I struggled to come up with a word in Japanese because I hadn’t talked in Japanese for a long time.  It’s a shame that the distance between us is quite long (well not so long in terms of distance but if I wanted to go to Lewes by train it’d take more than 2 hours because of the way how train lines are here) and it’s not so easy to casually get together, but I hope we’ll get to know each other more in the future.
