夫の弟夫婦のお誕生日が両方とももうすぐなので、少し早いお誕生日のお祝いということで、Cliveden House でランチタイムにアフタヌーンティーをしました。イギリスのアフタヌーンティーの中では、ここが一番好みです。お部屋の雰囲気に特別感があるのと、最初にいただく塩味系のものが結構美味しい、一度日曜日に行ったらレストランはサンデーランチに使われていて、アフタヌーンティーはロビーがあるところでサーブされてあまり雰囲気が好みではなかったので、日曜日には行かないように気をつけることにしています。

The birthdays of both my husband’s younger brother’s and his wife’s are coming soon so we celebrated them at an afternoon tea at Cliveden House today.  This is probably our favourite place for an afternoon tea in England so far because the room is very elegant and the savouries are very good.  We’d been there once together before on a Sunday and they served it in the hall rather than the restaurant because the restaurant is used for Sunday Roast. We decided we didn’t like the hall so much so we try to remember not to go there on a Sunday.

 

最初の塩味系のものはヨークシャープディングにローストビーフが入ったものとゲームパイでした、どちらも美味しかったです。

The 2 savouries were Yorkshire pudding with roast beef and Game pie, both very nice.

 

その後、サンドイッチ、スコーン、ケーキ類が３段トレーに入って出されます、これは２人分。サンドイッチはコロネーションチキン、エッグサンド、サーモンサンドでしたが、わたしの分はサーモンの代わりにもう１つコロネーションチキンでした。サンドイッチはおかわりも出来て、わたしだけコロネーションチキンをもう１ついただき、スコーンやケーキは持ち帰りましたが、他の３人はサンドイッチのおかわりはせずスコーンやケーキをいくつかつまんでいました。イギリスではあるあるですが、サンドイッチのパンがすごく分厚くて繊細ではないのが少し残念、こういうサンドイッチの場合は個人的にはもっと薄くスライスされたパンの方が好みです。

Then sandwiches, scones & petit cakes on 3 tier stands – the one right below is for 2 people.  The sandwiches were Coronation chicken, Egg, and Salmon – for me they prepared 2 with Coronation chicken because I cannot eat salmon.  They offer more sandwiches if you like and I had another Coronation chicken (but didn’t have anything else) but the others didn’t have extra sandwiches, moving on to the scones and cakes.  Like in many places in England sandwich bread is sliced very thick, I much prefer thinly sliced bread for sandwiches at afternoon tea.

お持ち帰りは、義弟夫婦のものと間違えて渡されていたことが発覚、何度も間違えないでねと確認したのでその場で開けて確認しなかった。

We brought home what was left but found out that the boxes got mixed up and we were given my brother-in-law’s and vise versa.   We did ask the staff a couple of times to make sure not to get them mixed up and were assured that would not happen so we didn’t open the boxes and check before setting off home – we should have.

 

 

今日はとても空いていて３グループくらいしかお客さんがいなかったこともあったのか、スタッフの方はずいぶん気さくに話しかけて来られました。お茶もそれぞれにポットに２回分プラスもう１度お湯をたしていただいて、ゆっくりおしゃべりしながらいただきました。

Maybe because it was very quiet – there were only 2 groups and 1 couple at this sitting – the staff were very friendly and chatty.  We each had a pot of tea, additional hot water, then a fresh pot of tea while we chatted.

甘いものはたくさん食べられないのでイギリスのアフタヌーンティーにはあまり行かないのですが、雰囲気はとても良いので楽しんで来ました。義弟夫婦とのキャッチアップも出来て、良かったです。

I cannot eat a lot of sweet things so we don’t often go to afternoon tea in England (not many savouries are included) but it’s nice now and again and it was lovely to catch up with my brother-in-law and his wife.
