暑いです〜〜〜（涙）、クーラーもあまり効きません。１年中暑いシンガポールですが、５月、６月は特別暑く、夜もあまり気温が下がらないのでクーラーも効きにくくなります。今すぐにも、また涼しいところに逃げたい。。。
It’s soooo hot here…. keeping airconditioning on high but it isn’t working well because it’s just too hot. May and June are the hottest time of year here, it doesn’t cool down much at night either so it’s hot all day long. God, I hate this hot weather… I wish I could leave for somewhere cool again NOW!
さて、イギリス２日目。泊めていただいたお友達ご夫婦とお出かけ。この日もとても暑くて、外を歩くのは無理（日陰なら良いのですが、太陽を浴びるとジリジリ焼けそうに肌が熱くなります)だったので、ナショナルトラスト（ナショナルトラストというボランティア団体が保護している、経済的な負担で維持できなくなった貴族などの邸宅だったカントリーハウス）に行くことに。ナショナルトラストの建物の中は（窓が小さくてあまり陽が入ってこないですし、石でできているので）ひんやりと涼しいのです。こういうお家は大きなお庭（というより、もはや高原）がついていますので涼しい時はお庭を歩くのも良いのですが、今回は駐車場からお家まで（結構距離があります）歩くのも暑いお天気でした。
2nd day in England. We went out with our friends we were staying with. It was another very hot day, we (or I) could not possibly walk unless there is a lot of shade, so we went to a National Trust house (Petworth House), which was about 30 minutes by car from our friends’ place. Inside these buildings are nice and cool because they are made of stone and the windows are small. We would have walked in the garden if it weren’t so hot but it was – walking from the car park to the house was bad enough for me. The house is famous for their collection of paintings of famous painters like Turner.
お友達のお家から車で３０分ほど走ったところにある、「Petworth House」に行きました。所有者だった第３代エグルモント卿がターナーやヴァン・ダイクなど著名な画家達のパトロンだったため、絵画のコレクションで有名なところです。
カフェ。
ランチにソーセージサンドを食べました。普通に美味しかったです。せめてレタスが入っているともっと美味しかったのだけど。イギリスでは、ソーセージを食べすぎました。すごくまずいということがない安全牌なので、ついついオーダーしてしまいます。
We had lunch at their cafe and I chose sausage sandwich. I often choose sausage in England because they are a safe option for me, never too horrible to eat. I know it’s not good for you, but I’ve had so many things I just couldn’t eat in England, I have to go for a safe option when I can. This one was OK, enjoyable enough.
ランチのあとは、Petworth の街を少し歩きました。Petworth はアンティークで有名なようで、アンティークショップがたくさん並んでいました。
After lunch, we went to the town of Petworth and walked a little. Apparently it’s a town of Antique shops.
お家に戻って夕方までまたお庭でお茶をいただいたり、おしゃべりしたり。
夫がイギリスに帰るとまっさきにしたいのがパブでイギリスのビールを飲むことなので、お友達との夕食は１日目はお家で、２日目はパブでとリクエストし、２日目は近くのパブで。お家から１５分ほど歩いたでしょうか。夕方になると涼しかったので、歩くのも問題なし。
After that, we went back to our friends’ house, had tea in the garden, chatted a while until dinner time.
When we were asked what we wanted to do about dinner, we requested home cooked dinner on our first evening and a pub dinner for the 2nd night. The first thing my husband wants to do when we arrive in England is to have proper English beer in a pub. I guess we walked about 15 minutes to the pub, it was cool enough by now to walk for me.
夫は、フィッシュ＆チップス。
My husband had Fish & Chips.
お友達はステーキ＆キドニーパイ。本来は牛脂を使ったどっしりしたパイ生地で包まれているものですが、こちらのパブでは市販のパフペイストリーを焼いて厚さを半分のしたものが使われていて、お友達はいずれにしてもカロリーの高いペイストリーは召し上がらないので問題なかったものの本来のものと違いすぎますし、ペイストリーが大好きという夫のような人もいるのできちんとメニューに書くべきことのような気がします。
My friend had Steak & Kidney Pie. To me, this is not Steak & Kidney Pie. Half sliced store bought puff pastry for Steak & Kidney Pie? That is totally cheating! My friend was happy with this as she doesn’t eat the pastry anyway, but some people (like my husband) love the proper pastry, I felt it should have been mentioned on the menu.
お友達のご主人は、ラムシャンクだったと思います。写真にはありませんが、お友達ご夫婦のお料理にはお野菜が別添えでついてきていました。
My friend’s husband had Lamb Shank, I think. There is no photo but Lamb and Steak & Kidney Pie came with vegetables in separate dishes.
わたしは散々迷って、お隣のテーブルの方が召し上がっていたタイっぽいチキンとピラフにしてみたのですが、これが大ヒット、ハーブやスパイスの香りがとても美味しかったです。自分でも作れたらと思うお料理でした。
It took me a long time to decide, which is very unusual but I wasn’t able to find anything I fancied, but in the end I chose what someone at the table next to us was having. Some chicken (flavoured with Thai inspired herbs and coconut milk) with pilau rice, it was delicious, I would love to make something like this.
デザートは、夫とチョコレートキャラメルプディングをシェアー。これも美味しかったと思います。
My husband and I shared Chocolate Caramel Pudding, I think it was very good.
この日もパブから戻る頃には夫もわたしも眠くて眠くて、すぐに寝てしまいました。
Both my husband and I were so sleepy by the time we got back to our friends’ from the pub, we crashed out.
