Pub Lunch & Bar Supper

また書いてしまいます、暑いです。。。（ため息）。今朝はしばらくーザー雨が降っていたので少しは涼しくなるかと期待したのが間違いでした。そして眠い。。。昨日は夫が出勤してからまた寝ましたが、今日は４時から寝れないまま。このまま夜になるまで頑張るしかありません。

I know I’ve said this a few times already but it’s so hot…. It rained heavily this morning so I thought it may cool down a little – a big mistake! I’m also so sleepy because I got up at 4.00am.

今朝４時に起きてしまってこの記事を書いていたのですが、ほぼ書き終わったところで消してしまいました（涙）。書き直し。。。

I wrote this post very early this morning but just before saving it I deleted it by mistake. So sad….

Gidleigh Park２日目、お昼は前述のイギリスのお母さんと昔先生だったお友達を車でピックアップして、近くのパブでランチをしました。パブの写真も他の３人のランチの写真も撮っていなかったようで、わたしのランチの写真だけがありました。食べたいものがメニューに見つからず、目玉焼きとフライドポテト（笑）。イギリスでは Egg & Chips と言ってパブに昔からあるメニューです。味は、見た目そのものです（笑）。まぁ、食事は二の次で２人と会うのが目的なので。それにしても、こうしてソーセージやチップスばかり食べていたから太っちゃったんですね〜（涙）。（これは半分も食べませんでしたが、それでも多分すごいカロリー。）

On the 2nd day in Devon, we picked up my English Mum and a friend (who was my teacher many years ago) and went to a pub for lunch. I cannot find any photos of the pub or any lunches except mine. I wasn’t able to find anything appealing to me on their menu and in the end I ordered Egg & Chips. I guess it’s all these chips that made me gain so much weight on this holiday. I didn’t have even a half of it but even so it has a lot of calories I guess. I very seldom have deep-fried food at home. I don’t remember it being specially tasty, but it was what it was supposed to be. Anyway, the main thing was to see the 2 people we wanted to see.

イギリスのお母さんは今年初めくらいだったかに肺炎にかかってしまい何度抗生物質を飲んでも良くならず、良くなるまで何ヶ月かかかっていたのですが、この日は大きなステーキと山のようなチップス（この写真と同じくらい）をきれいに完食されましたし、たくさんお話ししていつものようにわたしたちを笑わせてくれたので、あちこち痛いところなどはあるようですがお元気なのだと一安心。元先生だったお友達もお変わりなくお元気そうでしたし、短い時間でしたがご一緒出来て嬉しかったです。

My English Mum had pneumonia earlier this year and she wasn’t able to get rid of it in spite of taking many courses of antibiotics and it took her a few months to feel OK, but she must be now OK as she finished a large steak and a mountain of chips! I was relieved that she had a good appetite and talked and made us laugh a lot. I was also happy to see my other friend looking good.

Gidleigh Park の１泊目の食事はとても美味しかったですし苦しいほどお腹いっぱいというお料理ではなかったですが、やはり２日続けてコース料理をいただく気にならず、２日目の夕食はバーで軽くいただくことにしました。夫は何かのガランティーヌ（お肉を巻いたお料理）みたいですね。

Although the dinner at Gidleigh Park on our first evening was excellent and it wasn’t heavy, we didn’t feel like having another long course meal on the 2nd day, so we decided to have a light supper in the bar. It looks like my husband had some sort of Galantine.

わたしはハムのサンドイッチにしたのですが、これが悲しいサンドイッチでした。ハムはあまり塩気のないタイプで、レタスは申し訳程度にしか入っていず、トマトは熟れていない味のないトマトで、塩胡椒もほとんどしていないので味がなく、パンもこんなに分厚い割りに柔らかすぎて存在感なし。いくらバーの食事でもこのお値段でこのサンドイッチはあまりに悲しい。添えてあったサラダさえドレッシングがかかっているのかいないのか、というサラダで美味しくなかったです。以前はイギリスのパブのサンドイッチは大抵美味しくなかったですが、最近はスーパーのサンドイッチも美味しくなって来ているのに。尤も、前回泊まった時にいただいたサンドイッチは美味しかったので、ものによるのでしょう。マークス＆スペンサーズのサンドイッチを買ってくればよかった、と思ったことでした。

I had a ham sandwich but it was basically tasteless. The ham was homemade, I think, but wasn’t very salty like most ham, there was only a very small amount of lettuce and the tomato was pale-coloured and tasteless. I don’t think they used any seasoning either. The bread was cut thick but so fluffy there was hardly any texture. Even the salad was tasteless. It used to be very difficult to find tasty sandwich in England but these days even a supermarket sandwich is better than this. I remember the sandwich I had last time when we stayed here was very good so I guess it depends on which one you choose or who made it, but it was one of the worst sandwiches I’ve ever had. I wished I’d bought one in Mark’s & Spencer’s instead.
