ベトナムにチェーというスィーツというのかドリンクというのか、甘いものがあります。色々なスタイルがあるようですが、チェーと聞いてわたしが思い浮かべるのはボールに入ったココナッツミルクの中にタピオカやバナナが入っていたり豆類が入っている温かいものと、グラスにクラッシュアイスと一緒にやはり豆類やタピオカが入ったもの。あまり食べる機会がないのでホイアンで食べたいと思っていましたが、路上ではよく見かけたものの（さすがに路上のお店で氷入りのものを食べる勇気はありません）レストランのメニューには見かけなかったので、３日目、お料理教室の後しばらくお部屋でゆっくりしてから３時過ぎだったでしょうか、カフェに食べに行くことにしました。

There is something called “Che” in Vietnam, I’m not sure if it’s a sweet or a sweet drink but there are warm ones and cold ones.  What I know of is that hot ones come in bowls, made with coconut milk, some with tapioca & banana or some beans or some other things, and cold ones come in tall glasses, again with some coconut milk, tapioca etc with some shaved ice.  We wanted to have some and we did see them being sold in the streets (but we didn’t think it was wise to have it from those places) but didn’t see them on restaurant menus, so we decided to go to a cafe not far from the hotel we were staying at on the 3rd day after having a rest after our cooking class.

宿泊ホテルから古い町並みがある中心地と反対の方向に川沿いに歩いて７、８分でしょうか。日本の方が経営されているという「U Cafe」というカフェに行ってみました。

It was towards the opposite side from the hotel, towards the main part, about 7 or 8 minutes along the river and it’s called “U Cafe”.  I had read that it’s run by a Japanese lady.

 

 

 

 

風が通らなかったですし、上の階の方が眺めもいいかと上の階に行ってみました。上の階も風は通らずでしたが、扇風機があったので大丈夫でした。ハスの花が窓の外に見えて、良い雰囲気でした。

Since it was hot downstairs and we thought maybe it would be cooler and have better view there we went upstairs.  It was hot there, too, but we used their electric fan, which made it cooler.  The view was nice, specially with lotus flowers, and the interior was very nice.

 

 

 

日本人の方が経営されているらしいのですが、メニューはベトナム語で一部英語、チェーの説明については英語もなかったです。３種類あったのでスタッフに聞いてみたところ、英語はあまり話せないようでしたが、日本語が話せたので日本語でお聞きし、豆のチェーとフルーツのチェーをオーダーしてみました。

Although it’s run by a Japanese lady, there was no Japanese on the menu, just in Vietnamese and some English.  No explanation for the 3 kinds of Che in English so I asked one of the staff what each one was.  She didn’t have much English but did speak enough Japanese.  We ordered one with beans and one with mixed fruits.

でも、思っていたのとは違って、どちらも冷たいのですがカキ氷のような氷は入っていませんでした。豆のチェーは冷たいココナッツミルクの中に甘く煮た数種類の豆類が入っていました。普通に美味しかったですが、チェーというと層になっているイメージだったので、それとは違いました。もう１つのフルーツのチェーは、バナナとマンゴーと聞いていたのに実際はスイカとパイナップルとみかんで、しかも底に入っていたシロップだと思ったものは、ウォッカ？？何か強い甘くない透明のアルコールでした。クレームするのも面倒なのでフルーツだけ食べましたが。。。

It was different from what we imagined, neither of them had any shaved ice.  The one with beans had verious beans cooked with sugar in coconut milk, which was enjoyable enough.  We were told that the fruit Che had banana and mango but when it came it had watermelon, pineapple & orange.  We were shocked to find out that the clear liquid we thought was syrup was actually some kind of strong alcohol, I don’t know what it was, maybe vodka?  Anyway, it wan’t sweet.  I couldn’t be bothered to complain about it so we just ate the fruits and left the rest.

オーナーの方は日本の女性ですので、日本語のメニューをつくってくださっても良いのではと思うのですが。。。

Since the owner is Japanese I wonder why she doesn’t make the menu in Japanese.

カフェの雰囲気は良いのでのんびりするのなら良いと思いますが、チェーはわざわざ行かなくても良かったかな。

The cafe was nice and relaxing, it’s probably a nice place to relax or chat with friends but we didn’t think it was worth going there for those Che.

 

 

 

 

 

地元の方が何か作業をされていました。ホイアンの中心地は観光地されていて、レストランやカフェやおみやげ屋さんばかりですが、この辺りは普通の民家が並んでいてこんな風景もみられました。

The centre of Hoi An is very touristy and all you see are restaurants, cafes & shops, but here along the river there were only local houses and local people, this lady was working on something with the leaves of something.
