義弟夫婦に呼んでいただいて、お庭でバーベキューをご馳走になってきました。昨日までは今日のお天気の予報は晴れだったのに、当日になってみればあまり良くない感じで、車で走っている途中で雨も降ってきたので心配でしたが（義弟夫婦はウィンザーの近くに住んでいるので車で１時間半くらい離れています）、義弟宅に到着してからは概ね良いお天気でした。

My husband’s brother and his family invited us to a BBQ lunch in their garden today.  Until yesterday, the weather forecast said it was going to be sunny but this morning it said it was raining!  While we were driving to them (they live near Windsor, so it’s about an hour and a half drive) we had some rain and were quite worried, but it turned out to be good weather after all while we were there.

義弟夫婦はチキンとサラダ、わたしたちはソーセージとステーキとクスクスサラダと担当を分けていたのですが、車で５、６分走ったところでわたしが作ったクスクスサラダを冷蔵庫に入れたままだったことに気づいて取りに戻り、やれやれと思っていたらステーキは機械を持って行って義弟宅で低温調理する予定だったのに、肝心の低温調理器を持って行くのを忘れていたことに気づき、その上極め付きはソーセージも冷蔵庫に入れたまま忘れていたのでした。いやいや、夫婦揃ってなんてことでしょう。シャンパンや他のプレゼントを持って行くことに気を取られていて、他の大事なことがおろそかに。。。我ながら、ショック。

They were going to prepare chicken and salad, we were going to take sausages, steak and couscous salad, but after 5 or 6 minutes’ drive we realised I’d forgotten to take the couscous salad so we came back.  Then after a while we remembered we’d forgotten to take the sous vide equipment we were going to use to cook the steak before putting it on BBQ – we just had to do without – and then we remembered we’d forgotten sausages in the fridge, too!  Oh dear, what is going on with us?  It was so embarrassing!  I was trying to remember to take Champagne and some presents and forgot more important things.  So sad to be getting old…

ソーセージは、義弟宅の近くに以前行ったことがあるファームショップがあることを思い出し、事なきを得ました。そして、我が家の冷蔵庫には大きなソーセージが８本残っています。やれ、やれ。

Fortunately, we remembered there was a nice farm shop near their place on our the way so we were able to get sausages.  Now there are 8 sausages in our fridge, too!

ということで、義弟夫婦と姪っ子（甥っ子は別のところで暮らしています）に数ヶ月ぶりで会うことができました。多分最後に会ったのは１月末ごろだと思うので、５ヶ月弱会えていませんでした。

So we were finally able to see my husband’s brother, his wife and their daughter!  (Their son lives in a different place.)  I think the last time we got together was at the end of January, so it’s been almost 5 months!

最初はパティオで食事をしていたのですが、途中、陽射しが強すぎて暑かったので、木の陰に移動しました。陽が射すと暑すぎて陽が陰ると寒い、という典型的なイギリスの夏。日陰では、わたしは長袖のチュニックの上に薄いカシミアのセーターを着ても少し寒かったです。そして、テーブルの上のハンドジェルが、今を反映しています（笑）。

We were having the meal on their patio at first, but it got so sunny and hot, we moved everything to the nice shady place under the tree.  It’s too hot when the sun is out and too cold when the sun hides behind clouds – typical English summer weather.  I was wearing a long sleeve tunic and a thin cashmere sweater but I was still a little cold when I was in the shade.  The hand gel on the table shows what we are going through!

 

２匹の猫ちゃんのうちの１匹。どちらもわたしたちには近寄って来なくて、写真を撮りに近づくと目をそらされました（涙）。

They have two cats and this is one of them.  They don’t come close to us and when I tried to get close to her to take photos, she would not look at me.

 

手土産のピンクシャンパンでスタート。

We started our meal with the Pink Champagne that we brought.

クスクスサラダ、グリーンサラダ、ポテトサラダ、チキンサテ、ステーキ（フォイルの下）、ソーセージ。

Couscous salad, green salad, potato salad, chicken satay, steak (under the alminium foil) and sausages.

デザートは、姪っ子が焼いてくれたケーキとベリー。このタイプのケーキは初めて焼いたそうです。チョコレートケーキ。とっても美味しかったです！

The dessert was a chocolate cake our niece baked, together with some berries.  Apparently this was the first cake (or this type of cake) she had ever baked – it was yummy!

薔薇やスィートピーやクレマチス、ラベンダーなどたくさんのお花が咲いたカラフルなお庭。義弟夫婦はお野菜やお花をたくさん種から育てていて、トマトを１鉢とセージの赤ちゃんとブロンズフェンネルをいただきました。

Their garden is looking very colourful with lots of flowers like roses, sweet peas, clematis, lavender etc.  They grow lots of vegetables and flowers from seeds and gave us a pot of tomatoes, a little baby sage and a bronze fennel.

 

先日お友達ご夫婦が来てくださったのに続いて、ロックダウン以来２度目の集まりでした。わたしも夫もどうしても他の誰かと話をしないと寂しいというタイプではないので２人でも十分楽しく暮らせますが、家族や親しいお友達と会うことは大きな楽しみなので、やはり何ヶ月も会えないのはとても寂しいもの。イギリスに住むにあたって、こうして家族やお友達に会えることが大きな楽しみだったのですから。コロナウィルスの感染者がこれからも順調に減ってくれて、こうして会いたい人に会える日々が続きますように。

This was our 2nd human contact, after the gathering with our friends at home the other day.  My husband and I aren’t the type of people who need to be seeing people just to see people but it has been sad that we weren’t able to see our families and good friends.  This is what we were looking forward to doing when we moved to England.  I hope the coronavirus will get less and less threat to us so we can enjoy seeing our families and friends more often.
