Garden Update

今日はお昼過ぎまでは曇っていたので、お昼の後少し休憩してまた草取りに励みました。途中からお天気が良くなって暑くなったので１度５分ほど休憩を挟みましたが、２時間くらい頑張りました。夫も途中から参加。大きな雑草はほぼ制覇してずいぶんスッキリしました。もちろん日々成長しますし新しいのも生えて来るのですが、後は毎日しなくても週に２度くらいで大丈夫じゃないかなと思っています。夫に、ガーデナーさんにもっと頻繁に来ていただくようにプッシュ中。ぎっくり腰になるのが怖い。

It was very dull weather until around 3.00pm today, so after resting a little after lunch, I did some more weeding. It became very sunny later so I had a rest for 5 minutes but I worked on weeding for about 2 hours, my husband joined me later. I think we got out almost all of the larger weeds and there are only very little ones left and the garden is looking much better. Of course they grow every day and new ones will also come out but perhaps we need to weed just a couple of times a week rather than doing it so often. I’ve been trying to persuade my husband to get our gardener to come and weed more often. I’m worried about doing my back….

やっとすっきりしたところで、お庭のビデオを撮りました。旅行から戻ってきたときはまだまだアリウムが綺麗でしたが、小さな方の２種類は枯れてきてグリーンになってきました。大きな方はかなり後から咲いたので、まだまだ綺麗です。アリウムには蜂さんがたくさんやって来ます。

So, as the garden is looking better now, I took a couple of videos. When we came back from our holiday, many alliums were still looking very pretty but 2 of the 3 kinds are looking like they are going and some had gone green already. The largest kinds are still looking pretty as they started to bloom later than others. We see a lot of bees on them.

それにしても、半年ちょっと前、去年の１０月末に植えたばかりの木々もずいぶん育ちましたし、４月末に植えたときは小さな苗だった植物もほんの１ヶ月ちょっとですっかり大きく育ってびっくり、殺風景だったお庭がほんのすっかりお庭らしくなりました。

It’s amazing how the trees have grown since October, when they were very thin, and how the plants we had planted at the end of April have grown so large only in one month and a week or two. The garden looked quite bare only a month and a half ago but now it’s looking quite full and pretty.

アリウムは、家から見て左手に一塊と奥のパティオの手前にたくさん植えられています。

Alliums are in 3 places in our garden, one is on the left side when you look from our house, the other 2 are in front of the back patio.

サルビア・ネモローサ・カラドンナ。シュッと長い花穂が素敵です。お庭の４箇所に植えられているのですが、家の中からはあまり見えないところにあるのが残念。

Salvia Nemerosa Caradonna. The long slender flowers are looking beautiful, they are in 4 places in our garden but sadly we cannot see them from inside the house.

ベル・エトワール、日本では香りバイカウツギと呼ばれているそうです。白いお花が可愛くて、甘い香りがします。その香りのせいなのか、たくさん黒い小さな虫がついていて、なんとかならないものかと。食器洗い洗剤を水で薄めてスプレーすると良いそうなので、試してみます。

Belle Etoile. Pretty white flowers that smell sweet. I guess the sweet smell attracts insects, some tops of the branches are covered with black insects, yuk! We read that a mixture of washing up liquid and water can get rid of them so we’ll give it a go.

サルビア・アミスタッド。１メートル以上に育つそうなのですが、今はまだ小さいです。

Salvia Amistad, Apparently they grow taller than 1 meter but at the moment they aren’t very tall.

小さくてひょろひょろだったスモークツリー、こんなに大きくなりました。

Smoke trees that were originally small and thin grew quite large so quickly.

アン・フォークランドというゼラニウム。地に這うタイプ。

Ann Folkland Geranium – creeping type.

ビバーナムはあっという間にお花が終わってしまって、こんな姿に（涙）。しろやグリーンの時期はあっという間に終わってしまいました。

Vibernum snowballs are already looking like this, the flowers finished and turned brown. The flowering time was much shorter than I expected.

アルケミラ・モリス。小さなグリーンのお花が咲きます。

Alchemilla Morris, small green flowers.

小手毬。２本（？）、植えました。

Snowmaund. We had 2 planted.

紫陽花（アナベル）も大分大きくなってきました。

Hydrangea Annabels are getting larger, too.

この赤いピオニーは、前の住人の方が植えられていたもので、お庭のリノベーションの時に処分することになっていたはずですが、残っていて、元気に咲いています。写真は旅行から戻ってきてすぐに撮ったものでまだ１つしか大きく開いていませんが、あっという間の他のも開いてきて、頭が重くて地面に寝てしまっていたので切って花瓶に飾っています。

These red peonies had already been planted when we moved in. When we did the renovation, they were supposed to be taken out but obviously they weren’t. I took these photos when we got back from our holiday and there was only one large opened flower but in the following few days most of them opened up and they were all on the ground as they were heavy, so we cut them and put them in a vase in the house.
