イギリスは、今日も引き続き良いお天気で１７度以上の気温になりました。ただ、長袖シャツの上にカーディガンで出かけたら、風が結構強くて思っていたより寒く感じました。

The weather is still lovely here, it went up to 17C or more today so I went out with just a long sleeve shirt and a cardigan but it was quite windy and felt a bit cold.

今日は、夫の学生時代からのお友達ご夫婦とランチをしました。お互いの家の真ん中あたり、ということで、「Sussex Ox」 という我が家からは１時間ちょっとのところにあるパブ。何度か行っていますが、メニューが小さくて、仕方なく食べるバーガーがあまり美味しくないのでしばらく行っていませんでした。景色が良いのでお友達ご夫婦はお聞い入りみたいなので、久しぶりに行ってみました。

We had lunch with my husband’s friends from his university time, we met at the “Sussex Ox”, which is more or less in the middle between us, about an hour and a quarter from us.  We’d been there a few times before but their menu is quite limited and I have tended to order a beef burger as I couldn’t find anything else I can eat but I never enjoy it so we hadn’t been back for a little while.  The view is lovely so our friends seem to like it so we went back there this time.

 

 

カリフラワーの韓国風、というのを夫とシェアーしてみました。コチュジャン味のカリカリするタレがかかっていて、甘じょっぱくてピリ辛、なかなか美味しかったです。

My husband and I shared Korean style fried cauliflower, which was crunchy, sweet, salty and a little spicy and quite nice.

 

夫のメインは、たら。まぁ、普通だったという感想でした。

For his main my husband had a cod, he said it was OK.

 

わたしは、そら豆のグリーンピースのバーガー、ガーリック・ヨーグルトソース、というのをオーダーしてみました。写真を見るだけでもわかると思うのですが、パッと見てすぐわかるくらいバンズがすごく焦げていて、真ん中は焦げた部分をこそげ落としたようでしたがそれでも結構しっかり焦げがこびりついていました。食べて焦げ臭くなければ良いのですが焦げ臭くて食べられなかったので、バンズだけ新しく焼き直して欲しいとお願いしたところ、持って来たのはほとんど真っ白、多分数秒だけグリルののせたのだと思われるもの。えっと、これってほとんど焼けてないですよね、というと、They were cautious not to burn.  （焦がさないように気をつけました。）と。は？？それじゃあ、最初のは普通だったのに焦げたとクレームされたから今回はクレームされないように形だけ焼いたみたいに聞こえますが。「最初のとこれの中間くらい、普通に焼いて欲しいんですが。」ということで、３度目は普通に焼けて来ましたが、なんだか気分が悪かったです。ただ、お会計の時に分かったのですが、バーガーを半額にしてくださっていました。（とはいえ、値引きされるよりも２度目のパンを普通に焼いて来て貰う方がありがたいですが。それに、もともと最初から焦げたものを出すのもどうかと思います、パン焼き直すくらい１分もかからないのに。）

This time I tried the Fava beans & pea burger with garlic yoghurt sauce.  I think the photo shows but I could immediately see it was burnt.  I opened the bun and they had obviously scraped off some of the burnt bread but there was still quite a lot left on the edges and it tasted very burnt and not enjoyable at all.  The burger was also burnt but it didn’t taste like it so I just asked them to replace the bun with a nicely toasted (grilled) one.  When they brought it back it was completely white with a couple of very very faint grill marks, I guess they ‘grilled’ it for 2 seconds.  I said, “well, I don’t think this has been grilled.”  The staff said, “They were cautious.”  What?!  To me it sounded like the one I first had was not burnt but I was being funny so they grilled for a few seconds so I cannot complain that it’s burnt.  It was black as you can see from the photo.  She asked me if I wanted them to do it again so I said, “Yes, please, something in between.”   The third time it was fine but it was not a pleasant experience.  However, I have to give a credit to them because we found out they discounted the burger to 50%.  (Having said that, I would have much preferred them to bring a properly grilled bun for the second time rather than getting a discount after an unpleasant experience, to be honest.  Besides, I don’t understand why they served me the burnt bun in the first place, how long does it take to grill a bun again?  A minute if that?)

バーガーも焦げていましたが（写真でもわかりますよね）味は焦げ臭さを感じなかったので、そのままいただきました、お味はとても良かったのが幸いです。チップスもカリッと美味しく揚がっていました。

It did taste very nice and I enjoyed it, it’s just a shame that they couldn’t grill the bun properly for the second time, it did spoil the experience.  Chips were very nicely done, too.

ベジタリアン用にお豆系のもので作ったバーガーはパブでの定番で良く見かけて最初の頃時々オーダーしていたのですが、ほとんどのものがあまり美味しくないのでだんだんオーダーしなくなっていました。これはとても美味しかったです。２度目のほとんど焼いていないバンズがなければ、気持ちよく美味しくいただけたのに、残念。

Some sort of pulse burger is very common for a vegetarian option in pubs and I have ordered one quite a few times when we first moved to England but I often find them boring and not enjoyable so I now avoid it, but this one was very tasty.

 

 

 

デザートは、アップル・クランブルをシェアーしました。これは、まぁまぁ。りんごの量が少なくクランブル部分の方が多くてバランスが悪かったですし、クレーム・アングレーズもあまり美味しくなかったです。

For dessert we shard Apple Crumble, which wasn’t great.  There was very little apple and it was mostly sweet crumble, the custard wasn’t so nice either.

 

 

お友達ご夫婦は長い間飼っておられた犬を２年前に亡くされてもう飼わないとおっしゃっていましたが、やはり寂しいらしく、最近、スペインのレスキュー犬を引き取られたので、その犬のお話などで盛り上がりました。夫ともイギリスに来たら犬を飼いたいねと言っていたのですが、コロナがあったり欲しい犬種が見つけられなかったりで時期を逃してしまい、子供がいないこともあり今から飼うのは遅すぎると思うので、羨ましいなーと思いながら色々お話を聞きました。

Our friends had had a dog for many years but she died two years ago. They were saying then they wouldn’t get another dog but I guess they missed having one too much, and they recently got a rescue dog from Spain. the experience has been quite eventful so there was a lot to listen to.  When we moved to England my husband and I were seriously talking about getting a dog but the lockdown happened then we couldn’t find a dog that we wanted and we decided we are too old to get a dog now specially because we don’t have children to pass it to.  I wish we were able to get one but I suppose we have a lot more freedom without one.

 

お会計は、ビール2.５パインと、ソフトドリンク１杯でバーガーの５０％引きとあちらの都合で予約を１日ずらしたのでということで１０％引きがあり、最終的に１組48ポンド(9,190円）ととてもお安かったです。

 

We had 2.5 pint of beer and a glass of soft drink in total.  The bill had 50% off the bean burger and 10% off the total (because they asked us to change our reservation to another day because something happened to their staff) and it was £48 per couple.  Without the discounts it would have been £56.
