昨日も書きましたが、この辺りに特にお気に入りのレストランがないので、イギリスではここ何年かバレンタインデーにはアフタヌーンティーに行っています。これまで行った中で一番気に入っているのは Clivden House というホテルのアフタヌーンティーなのですが、我が家から車で２時間と遠くて、日帰りで２時間の運転は夫が大変だと思うのとお値段もかなりなので、この2、３年はこの辺りのホテルやカフェにトライしました。でも、やっぱり、特別感がなく残念な感じがするということで、２時間運転大変でしょうと言いましたが夫がいいよと言ってくれたので、Clivden House に行きました。

As I wrote yesterday, we don’t have any restaurants that we really like around here, so we’ve been going out for an afternoon tea on Valentine’s Day since we moved to England.  My favourite place for an afternoon tea is Cliveden House but it’s quite far for us, about 2 hours one way.  I feel it’s too tiring for my husband to drive 2 hours one way for a day trip and also I knew it’s very expensive – so we’ve tried a few places around here in the last 3 years.  However, none of them make you feel special, and my husband told me he didn’t mind, so we did go back to Cliveden House today.

 

 

 

席についてすぐに係りの女性が「コンプリメンタリーのシャンパンをお出ししますが、普通のものにされますか、ノンアルコールにされますか？」と聞かれました。普通のものをいただいたのですが、わたしは何か食べながらでなくてはアルコールはあまり飲めないですし、この後お茶もいただきましたのでシャンパンは少しだけいただきました。

As soon as we sat at the table, the lady in charge said to us, “We have complimentary Champagne, would you like non-alcohol or normal one?”  We both chose normal.  As we were sipping (I only sipped a little because I cannot drink alcohol with an empty stomach, and we had tea to have as well), I said to my husband, “She did say complimentary very clearly, didn’t she?  Isn’t it strange, though?  They have a Champagne afternoon tea option, which is much more expensive, and just normal afternoon tea.  I wondered why are they offering complimentary Champagne today?”

なのですが、いただきながら夫に「今、確かにはっきりとコンプリメンタリーって言ったよね？でも、ここのアフタヌーンティーはシャンパン付きとそうでないのとあってお値段がずいぶん違うのに、なんで今日はコンプリメンタリーのシャンパンのサービスがあるんだろうね？」と言っていたのです。そして、まさかと思いましたが、お勘定にしっかり１杯につき20ポンド（4,170円）がついていました。こういうのって言いにくいですが、わたしはシャンパンをオーダーするつもりは全くなかったので40ポンド（そこに税・サービスもつきます）もお支払いする気にはなれないので、夫が「コンプリメンタリーとはっきりと言われたんだけど？」とクレームしたら、シャンパンの分は引いたお勘定が来ました。夫が言うには、近くのテーブルで同じことをクレームしていたカップルがおられたそうです。多分、言いにくくて言わない方もおられるから、こういう売り方をするのでしょうか、せっかく楽しくアフタヌーンティーをいただいたのに後味も悪いですし、残念な経験でした。コンプリメンタリーは無料ってことですよね？他の意味はあり得ませんよね？

Well, when we asked for the bill, it did have “Champagne Afternoon Tea”, which is £20 each more than the standard one.  I must say it did make us think if they do it on purpose because some people feel too embarrassed to  challenge them and just pay.  As I said I didn’t even have much of the Champagne and we didn’t feel we should pay £20 each for something we didn’t ask for.  When my husband booked he selected the normal afternoon tea.  My husband mentioned he thinks someone else was also saying the same thing to a staff.  So my husband said to one of the staff that we were told complimentary Champagne very clearly, but the bill is for Champagne Afternoon Tea – that isn’t complimentary is it?  They didn’t make too much fuss and did deduct £40 but it did leave us with a bad taste, which was a shame because we enjoyed the afternoon tea.  Why did she say “complimentary”.  I still don’t understand.

 

 

 

 

最初の２品は３段トレーとは別に、プレートに置かれて出されました。わたしには野菜のサモサと何かのパイ（多分、ベジタリアンのソーセージ）、美味しかったです。

The first 2 items came on a plate rather than on the 3 tier stand.  They gave me a vegetable samosa and some pie (I think it was vegetarian sausage), which were very nice.

 

夫は、基本のゲーム・パイ（鹿肉）とヨークシャー・プディング。

For my husband, it was game pie (venison) and Yorkshire pudding with beef – these is the normal ones on the menu.

 

３段トレーも１人分ずつ。

They gave one tray each.

 

 

サンドイッチはサーモン、コロネーションチキン、エッグマヨでしたが、わたしはサーモンがいただけないので代わりにサーモンっぽく演出された薄切りの人参とクリームチーズのものが出てきました。日本では（多分香港でもそうだったような気が？）アフタヌーンティーのサンドイッチは薄い食パンで小さく切られていて洗練された感じがしますが、イギリスでは大抵素朴に分厚い（イギリスのトースト用のパンの倍くらい）パンで出てきます。でも、ちゃんと塩胡椒が適量で美味しかったです。サンドイッチはおかわりができるので、わたしはコロネーションチキン、夫はサーモンのサンドイッチを追加でいただきました。

The sandwiches were salmon, Coronation chicken  and Egg mayo – but as I cannot eat salmon they made one with thinly sliced carrot and cream cheese that looked like salmon.  In Japan (and I think it Hong Kong as well) the sandwiches at afternoon tea like this is very sophisticated looking with very thin slices of bread cut small, but I think here they tend to be quite thick (at least much thicker than usual English sliced bread for toasting).  They tasted very good with proper levels of seasoningYou can ask for more sandwiches so I had Coronation chicken one and my husband had Salmon one as extra.

 

甘いケーキ類はなんだったか覚えていませんが、食べられなかったのでお持ち帰りしました。

I cannot remember what these small sweet cakes were but we weren’t able to eat them so we brought them home.

 

アフタヌーンティーをいただいた後、腹ごなしに少しだけお散歩しました。

After having the afternoon tea, we walked in the hotel grounds a little.

 

 

 

 

スノードロップはもう終わりかけな感じで、水仙がたくさん咲いていました。

Snowdrops look like end of their flowering time and there were already a lot of daffodils out.

 

このところ雨がすごく多い毎日ですが、今日は運良く良いお天気で良かったです。それも大きいと思いますが、ナショナルトラストでもあるこのホテルのお庭には大勢の方達が訪れておられました。

We’ve been having lots and lots of rain recently but luckily it was a lovely sunny day today.  I guess that’s also a big reason, as well as being a Saturday, that we saw many people walking in the grounds today.

サンドイッチも最初の２品も美味しかったですし、スコーンはわたしはプレーンな方だけいただきましたが固めですがドライではなく美味しくいただきました。サービスも良かったのですが、シャンパン事件だけが残念。アフタヌーンティーはシャンパンなしのものが１人68ポンド（14,200円）、ここに税・サービスがつきます。普通にディナーがいただける金額ですが、お部屋は素敵ですしサンドイッチも美味しいのでよしとします。

The sandwiches as well as the small bites we got first were very tasty and the scone (I only had a plain one) was also quite nice although it was on the firm side.  The service was also good except for the incident of the Champagne.  The normal afternoon tea (no Champagne) was £68 (plus tax/service) per person, which is as expensive as dinner at many restaurants, but we knew how much and the food was all enjoyable.
