イギリスに着いた３日目は、エクセターに住む昔英語留学した時のホームステイでお世話になった「イギリスのお母さん」と最初の先生とランチに出かけました。お２人とは３５年近いお付き合い。夫の両親が健在だった頃、夫の父が亡くなってからも母が生きていた頃は毎年、その後も必ず毎年ではないですがイギリスに行くとほぼ必ずエクセターまで足を伸ばしてお２人とお目にかかっています。以前は夫がイギリスの本社で少し仕事があることが多くその間ホームステイ先のお母さんのお家にわたしだけ数日から１週間泊めていただいたりしたのですが、夫の本社がドイツに移ってしまったのでそういうこともできず、最近は短時間の食事だけになりがちです。今回も、ランチをご一緒出来ただけでした。

On our third day in England, we met two old friends for lunch.  One is my “English Mum”, who was my landlady when I stayed in Exeter to learn English when I was young, and the other was my first teacher there.  When my husband’s parents were alive, and even after his father passed away, we visited England every year and always met up with these two friends during the trip.  I used to stay in Exeter for an extra few days or even a week while my husband worked but he doesn’t have any reason to be at the office in England any more so we tend to spend just an afternoon or an evening with them in recent years.

滞在していたダートモアから車で１時間ほどのところにあるエクスモアにあるパブのレストラン、The Masons Arms、 ミシュランの１つ星です。丁度滞在していたホテルからの通り道にお２人のお家があったので途中でピックアップして、わたしたちの車で出かけました。

We had lunch at “The Masons Arms” in Exmoor, which was about an hour’s drive from where we were staying – the restaurant there has one Michelin star.  As our friends live on the way from our hotel to the restaurant, we picked them up on our way.  It was even more foggy than the day before.

この日は前日よりさらに霧が濃い日でした。

 

確かわたしは前菜に何かのスープ、メインはポークベリーのローストだったと思います。夫はサーモンのタルタルだったでしょうか。

 

I think I ordered some sort of soup to start and then Roasted Pork Belly for the main course.  My husband had salmon tarter for a starter, I cannot remember what he had for the main.

ミシュランの星の基準は、

１つ星：そのカテゴリーで特に美味しい料理
２つ星：遠回りしてでも訪れる価値がある素晴らしい料理
３つ星：そのために旅行する価値がある卓越した料理

と言われています。ここは、パブとしては美味しいってことなのでしょうか？トリップアドバイザーでもかなり酷評がついていますが、やっぱり、という気持ち。ミシュランの星がつくからには、せめて家庭料理以上のものであってほしいです。パンさえ美味しくなかったです。プレゼンテーションはシンプルながらそれなりに綺麗ですが、お味が。。。ミシュランの星って不思議、と思うことが度々。。。日本の普通のところの方が美味しいってどういうことなんでしょうね〜。１時間も遠出したのに。奥様がサービスに当たられていて、サービスはとても感じが良かったのですが。。。

そして、ダートモアからエクスモア、景色が良くてドライブも楽しいと思って選んだのでしたが霧の中では景色も見えず、残念でした。

それでも、お２人にお目にかかれたのは嬉しかったです。いつも、もっとゆっくり出来ればと後ろ髪を引かれる思いでお別れします。また、次回！

 

To be honest, I often wonder what the standards of Michelin stars are.  I know they are :

• : “A very good restaurant in its category”
• : “Excellent cooking, worth a detour”
• : “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”

How good is a very good?  Is this place very good as a pub?  There are so many very “ordinary restaurants” in Japan that serve much better foods than this place but they have no Michelin stars (or most likely they don’t even attempt to).  I would have thought it should be at least better than the normal sort of food you get at home, cooked by an ordinary housewife.  I did see a lot of very harsh reviews on this place on Tripadvisor and I must say I agree with many of them.  The lady who served was very nice, I have no complaints with their service but the food wasn’t enjoyable.  The presentation is simple but nice, it doesn’t have to be fancy.  It is a pub restaurant, we don’t expect it to be very fancy, but it has to taste good.

It was quite a long drive from where we were but I thought it would be a nice drive from Dartmoor to Exmoor with lovely scenery.  It was very unfortunate that we had thick fog.

Anyway, at least we loved seeing our friends.  The time flew too quickly but hopefully next time we can take more time.
