Cottage Pie My Way (with a recipe)


Today, I made a cottage pie with my own twist.  The filling is like Bolognese sauce with lots of vegetables and lentils and the topping is mixture of potato and Japanese sweet potato (not moist like local ones).  Usually in England they mix milk and butter to the mash but I don’t like butter so much and it’s better for you without so I don’t.  I just mush it with a potato ricer and put them on top of the filling.  The ration of the filling is vegetables : lentils : beef = 1 : 1 : 1 roughly.  Some carrots were also supposed to be on the side but something happened and we couldn’t, so just Brussels Sprouts on the side today.  I really liked how it came out – not very “cottage pie” like (surprisingly different actually – not really a comfort food, more modern tasting) really but very tasty.


For my own record, I’m going to write the recipe here – or I’ll forget.  I used some tin tomato left in the fridge – probably about 2/3 of a tin.  Because there wasn’t enough tomatoes I added a little tomato paste.










玉ねぎ 小1個(粗みじん切り)
セロリ 2本(粗みじん切り)
人参 小1本(粗みじん切り)
ニンニク 1かけ(粗みじん切り)
牛ミンチ 200g
トマトペースト 大さじ1程度
小麦粉 大さじ1程度
水 適量
じゃがいも 大2
さつまいも 2
好みのチーズ 適量






Onion 1 small (chopped)
Celery 2 (chopped)
Carrot 1 (chopped)
Garlic Clove 1 (chopped)
Tin Tomato (about 2/3)
Tomato paste 1Tbsp
Flour 1/2 -1 Tbsp
Chilli Pepper Fales
Olive Oil
Puy Lentil (about 2/3 cup)
Potato 2 large
Japanese Sweet Potato 2

Sautee vegetables with garlic in olive oil until onion is nice and soft, add mince beef and cook unti more or less cooked, add some flour and mix it well together.  Add tomato, water, tomato paste, chilli pepper and cook slowly for 30-40 minutes.

In the mean time, cook potatoes and sweet potatoes (separately), mash them with a potato riser and season.

In a separate sauce pan, cook lentils and add them to the vegetable and beef mixture.  Pour it in a baking dish.  Top it with the mixture of potato and sweet potato mash.  Put some cheese on top, drizzle with olive oil and bake it in a 200C oven for 15 minutes or so until the top is nice and golden.
