昨日夜遅く、義弟夫婦から無事に自宅に到着したと連絡がありました。ドバイでトランジットが７時間と聞いていたので、本当に長旅でしたね。ドア・トゥー・ドアで２４時間以上。お疲れ様！

Late last night, we received a message from my brother-in-law that they arrived home safely.  They had a 7 hour transit time at Dubai so it was a very long journey home, longer than 24 hours.

我が家はゲストルームは１つしかないので２人しかお部屋には泊まってもらえず、姪にはソファーベッドでスタディーに寝てもらっていました。その間はいつものように夜遅く写真編集してブログを書くことが出来なかったのでスリランカの記事が遅れていますが、そろそろ。

We have only 1 guest bedroom with 2 single beds so our niece had to sleep on a sofa bed in the Study while they were staying with us.  This is why I haven’t been able to write about Sri Lanka as I didn’t have all nights in the Study to edit photos and write about it.  I’ll do it slowly now.

お友達の中には覚えてくださっている方もおられるのですが、２０１５年１２月にイタリアにお住いのお友達家族に会いにスリランカに行って「２度と行かない〜！」と言っていました。ゴールの町並みは結構素敵でしたし地元の方達の人柄も良かったのですが、とにかく暑かった（外は灼熱の上、お店に冷房がなく風も通らない）のと、高額（時期的なものもありますが）な割にリゾートホテルが全然よくなくて泣きそうになり、同じビーチリゾートにまた行くことはないと思っています。なのですが、今回のスリランカは、スリランカに行くというよりもとても評判の良い「セイロン・ティー・トレイルズ」に泊まりたい、ということで行くことになりました。場所も山の中で気候も涼しいと聞いていましたし、実際少し寒いくらいの気候でした。

Some of my friends remember that we had a holiday in Sri Lanka in December 2015 so we could spend time with our friends from Italy, but we said we would never go there again.  Galle was quite nice, I enjoyed shopping in Colombo and I thought that local people were very nice, but it was just so, so hot and also the resort hotel we stayed wasn’t at all worth the money they charged, I remember we felt miserable there.  However, this time it’s different.  We (or rather “I”) wanted to stay at Ceylon Tea Trails because it has such a good reputation and I knew it was cool around there because of the high altitude.

セイロン・ティー・トレイルズのことはご存知ない方も多いようですが、Relais & Chateaux のグループに入っているホテルで、茶畑がたくさんある標高１５００メートルのバンガワンタワ谷ということろの湖の周りにバンガローが５軒点在しているホテルです。レビューを読むと「世界で一番素敵なホテル」という記述もみられる評判の良いホテルのようでした。以前スリランカに行く時に下調べした時にもスリランカに泊まるならここに泊まりたいと思ったのですが、もうその時点では全て満室だったのでした。今回はあまり下調べをしなかったので、時期を失敗したと思います。１年中気温が変わらないと覚えていたので季節はないように勘違いして夫のお誕生日に合わせて行くことにしたのですが、気温は変わらないもののモンスーンシーズンがあるのでもう少し後の方が良かったようでした。７月は普段ならそれほど雨は降らないそうですが、今年はずっと雨だとスタッフの方がおっしゃっていたようにわたしたちが滞在中も度々ザーッと大雨が降ったり、少ししとしとしたり、時々陽が射したり、というようなお天気でした。今回はほとんど何もせず出かけなかったので、そんなお天気の中でも十分楽しめましたが、ウォーキングなどされるなら時期を選んだ方が良いと思います。

Not many of my friends seem to know about this “Ceylon Tea Trails” but it belongs to Relais & Chateaux, consists of 5 bungalows and 1 cottage set around a lake in Bongawantalawa Valley at 1,500 metres high.  I’ve read some reviews that said “The best hotel in the world”.  When I was researching Sri Lanaka when we went there first time this was the place I wanted to stay at but, by the time we were planning, all the bungalows were fully booked.  This time I didn’t do much research because we weren’t going to do anything much but I mis-remembered something.  I remembered reading that the temperature is the same all year around so I sort of assumed there were no seasons but I found out that although the temperature is the same all year around more or less they do have monsoon season.  The staff told us that they don’t usually have so much rain in July but this year the monsoon was still going.  While were were there we had some heavy but short rain often and some lighter rain with a little sun shine now and again.  It wasn’t too much of a problem for us because the scenery was still beautiful and we hardly went out anyway but if you want to do some walking you probably should go a little later.

お友達でこのホテルをとても気に入られてシンガポール滞在中に２度行かれた方がおられ、その方からこのホテルまでの道のりがくねくね長い道のりで大変なので、水上飛行機がオススメとお聞きしていてそのつもりでいました。とりあえず早めにコテージとシンガポール・コロンボ間のフライトを抑え、少し経ってからホテルに水上飛行機の手配をお願いしたのですが、そのときにコロンボ発着の時間の関係で水上飛行機は勧められない、車を手配しますと言われてしまいました（涙）。わたしたちは朝１１時ごろにコロンボ着、お昼過ぎくらいの便でコロンボ発というフライトを取っていたのですが、ホテルのある辺りは午後からは霧が出て水上飛行機がキャンセルになる可能性が高いとのこと。また、水上飛行機は気候の関係で遅れたりキャンセルになることが多いので帰りのお昼すぎにコロンボ発のフライトに間に合わなくなってしまう可能性があるので、こちらも車の方が良いとのことでした。もうフライトも取ってしまっていましたし、夫の義弟家族もいましたのでフライトを変えるのも難しく、仕方なく車での移動となりました。

A friend of mine loves this place and stayed here twice in the last couple of years and she told me she recommends us to take a seaplane because getting there by car takes long time on very narrow winding roads.  We booked our flights between Singapore and Colombo and booked a cottage early then contacted the hotel to make arrangement for the seaplane for us – then we were told that they wouldn’t recommend taking the seaplane in our case.  Our flight was arriving around 11.00am in Colombo and the area can get very foggy after midday and the flights can be cancelled.  Also, we booked our return flight around lunch time from Colombo to Singapore and they told us the seaplanes get delayed or cancelled often so we cannot be sure we’ll make the flight.  We had no choice but asking them to make car arrangements.

ただ、車は座高の高い座り心地の良いインドで乗っていたような車でしたし、運転手さんの運転も安全運転で上手でしたし、時間も４時間半くらいかかると聞いていましたが３時間半ちょっとくらいでしたので、多少は疲れたものの思っていたほど大変ではなかったです。（念のために、酔い止めは飲みました。）それでも帰りは朝４時起き、こちらの空港に着いたのが夕方７時でやはりかなり疲れました。わたしは車の中でも機内でも結構寝ていたのですが、戻ってきた夜は眠くて眠くて、ディナーが終わる頃にはぼぉ〜っとしていました（笑）。

The car was similar to what we had in India so comfortable, the driver drove safely and compliantly and it took only about 3.5 hours instead of 4.5 hours that they say in their website so it wasn’t as bad as we feared.  I did take travelling pills just in case, though, because I have a friend who got travel sick on the same sort of route.  Still I had to get up at 4.00am on the day we left the hotel and it was 7.00pm when we arrived in Singapore so I was very tired and sleepy by the time we finished our dinner at Pollen.  I did sleep quite a lot in the car and on the plane but I supposed it was just a long day.

ティー・トレイルズというくらいなので、ホテルの周りは茶畑だらけです。心が休まる景色でした。

As the name “Tea Trails” suggest, there are a lot of tea fields, very soothing scenery.

前日大雨が長く降って道が悪く、ここからは車で行けないのでボートに乗ってくださいと言われ、Summerville Bungalow の側からボートにのって向こう側のわたしたちが宿泊した Dunkeld Bungalowに。

They had a lot of heavy rain on the day before we arrived so we were told there is a part of the road up to our bungalow that we couldn’t drive through, so we took a boat across the lake from Summerville Bungalow to Dunkeld Bungalow, where we were staying.
