今日は、義弟夫婦が夫のお誕生日会を兼ねて、お庭でのランチに招待してくれました。２週間ほど前に決めた日程で、その時には今日のお天気は良い予報だったのですが、午前中は雨。イギリスのお天気予報はあまりあてにならないというか、それだけお天気が変わりやすいのでしょう、よくはずれます。なので、外での集まりは前もって予定を立てにくくて困ります。

My husband’s younger brother and his wife invited us over to a lunch in their garden to have a family get-together and celebrate my husband’s birthday.  This was organised a couple of weeks ago, when the weather forecast said it was going to be good weather today, but it rained in the morning.  This seems to happen often, weather forecasters here seem to get it wrong, I guess it’s because weather here is complicated and unpredictable.  This makes it hard to plan any outings in advance.

１２時ごろに集まる予定でしたが午前中にはやみそうだったので、１時からにして集まりました。うちから車で１時間半ほどなのですが、家を出た時はまだまだ怪しいお天気で途中少し雨が降ったりもしていましたが、到着する頃には雨はやんでいて、後から暑いくらいのお天気になりました。

We were going to get together around 12.00pm but as the rain was expected in the morning, it was delayed to 1.00pm.  It takes about an hour and a half by car from our place, it was looking very dark here and rained on the way, but the rain had stopped before we arrived and it got quite sunny later.

Vegetarian Chilli Con Carne, Chicken Bake, Mushroom & Pasta Bake, Rice, Bean Salad, Celery, Apple & Raisin Salad, Tomato, Cucumber, Onion, Celery, Apple, Lettuce & Rocket Salad (we took this) – a real spread!

義兄のパートナーが作ってこられたルバーブやブラックベリーなどが入ったクランブル。

サプライズのバースデーケーキ。多分、こういうケーキをお誕生日にいただくのは少なくとも結婚してから初めて。覆っているのはクリームではなく、アイシング。全部お砂糖なので甘いです。多分、保存のために始まったのだと思いますが、今では飾ることが目的みたいです。欧米では特にお子さんのお誕生日に色々な形や飾りのものが用意されるのを見かけます。これは、義弟夫婦のご近所のお友達が作ってくださったそうです。中身は、ビクトリアスポンジ。最近は花火みたいなものをキャンドル代わりに使うのが流行っているみたいですね、それもすごい勢いの。

And a surprise birthday cake for my husband.  This is the first English style birthday cake my husband has had, at least since we married.  It’s covered with icing, not cream like Japanese ones.  I guess this style was invented to preserve the cake but these days it seems to be used mainly to decorate the cake. I’ve seen some quite extravagant ones, especially for children’s birthdays.  This was made by my brother-in-law’s neighbour.  Inside is Victoria Sponge Cake.  This fire work style candle (?) seems to be very popular recently instead of ordinary candles and those thin sparklers that we used to see.

家族にお誕生日をお祝いしてもらうことなどこれまでなかったことなので、きっと夫も嬉しかったことと思います。

I don’t think my husband has had a birthday with his families for ages, I’m sure this made him very happy.
