義弟夫婦のお誕生日がどちらもついこの間だったので（わたしと同い年、２ヶ月ほど違うだけです）、うちでランチをすることにしました。義弟夫婦にもお友達の何人かにも引っ越してきて以来とてもお世話になっていて、本来ならリノベーションの第一段階が終わったら食事にきてもらおうと思っていたのですが、ロックダウンで延び延びになっていて心苦しい限りです。今は家族まで集まっても良く、お互いの家に泊まることも許可されているのですが室内で一緒に過ごすことは出来るだけ避け流ようにという政府からのアドバイスなので、お天気の良い日にお庭でバーベキュー、が理想なのですが、ロックダウンの影響でバーベキューが買えないのです。そして、外で長時間過ごすには暑すぎたり寒すぎたり雨の予報だったりで、予定が立てにくのです。
My husband’s younger brother and his wife had their birthdays recently (they are both same age as I am, just a couple of months older), so we invited them to lunch at home. Since (and before) we moved to England, they (and our friends) have been very kind and supportive to us, we’ve been wanting to invite them back but the lockdown stopped us visiting each other. Now we are allowed to visit each other and we are even allowed to stay at each other’s houses but it is advised to stay outdoors as much as possible. We would have liked to do BBQ in the garden but we haven’t managed to buy one yet. Besides, it has been too hot, too cold, too wet, etc, it’s hard to make a plan when you want to stay outdoors.
今日は雨の確率が４０％くらいあり、朝は少しぱらついていたのですが、お昼ごろ少し明るくなっていたので外で食べました。
The forecast was saying there was 40% chance of rain and it actually rained just a little in the morning, but it brightened up a little later so we deiced to eat outside.
義妹が以前わたしたちのタイ料理のディナーをインスタにポストしたときに、「状況が変わってお互い行き来できるようになったら、これが食べたい」というようなコメントをくれたのでタイ料理にしました。その時に作ったガッパオ（豚ミンチのバジル炒め）と豚ミンチのラーブ（サラダ）、そしてもう１品、先日とても美味しかったのでタイ風ビーフサラダ。ビーフサラダは今回は残り物ではなくこのためにリブアイステーキを買い、１晩マリネして昨日低温調理器（Anova）で調理したあと表面を焼いたものを使いました。
When I posted a Thai meal on Instagram, my sister-in-low commented, “When all this is gone, can you cook this for us?” so we cooked a Thai meal. Stir-fried mince pork with basil, Mince pork laab (salad) and Thai beef salad as we enjoyed it so much the other day. We didn’t use left-over for the beef salad this time, we bought a Ribeye steak on Wednesday, marinaded it overnight and cooked it with Anova yesterday.
変な座り方ですが（笑）、出来るだけ離れて座れるように、こんな風にセッティング。
This looks strange but we thought this gives us maximum distance.
タイ風ビーフサラダ。ビーフ、エシャロット、トマト、きゅうり、レタス類、青ネギ、ロケット、シャンツァイ、ミント。ドレッシングはライム汁、ナンプラー、砂糖、唐辛子のフレーク。このサラダは適当に作っているので、本格的なものではないかもしれません。
Thai Beef Salad. It has beef, shallots, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, rocket, green onion, coriander & mint. The dressing is lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, and chilli flakes. This may not be totally authentic as I always wing it.
ガッパオ（豚ミンチのバジル炒め）。ロングビーンズは簡単に手に入らないので、インゲンで代用しました。そして、ずっと小さな赤い唐辛子が手に入りません。オーダーするオンラインスーパでは「赤かグリーンの」バードアイチリ、となっていて何度かトライしていますが毎回グリーンが来ます。使ったことがないので辛さが心配でしたが、かなりマイルドでした。
Stir-friend mince pork with basil. We couldn’t get hold of long beans easily so we used usual green beans instead.
豚ミンチのサラダ（ラーブ）。豚ミンチ、エシャロット、青ネギ、シャンツァイ、ミント、コブミカンの葉、お米をローストして潰したもの。ドレッシングは、ライム汁、ナンプラー、砂糖、唐辛子のフレーク。

実は、義妹は辛いものがあまり得意ではありません。でも、昔より辛いものも食べられるようになってはきている様子。この３品とも本来は激辛のお料理なのですが、唐辛子の量を３分の１くらいにして、各自足せるようにしました。そのせいかどうか、タイ料理独特のガツンとしたパンチに欠けていたように思いますが、まぁ、普通に美味しく食べられました。
My sister-in-law cannot take a lot of spice heat but she seems to cope with spiciness nowadays better than when she was younger. However, these 3 dishes are supposed to be super spicy, but I used only about 1/3 of the normal chillis. I guess this is why, but I felt they wren’t quite as punchy as they usually are. It wasn’t bad, though, just not brilliant.
何か持っていくものがあれば言ってね、と言われてたのでデザートをリクエストしたら、こんな可愛いデザートを作って来てくれました。ピムズのトライフル！下はピムズや苺やミントなどのゼリー、その上にカスタード、その上に生クリーム。今風でおしゃれで美味しいデザートでした。
We were asked if we would like them to bring something so I asked for a dessert. This is what they brought – Pimm’s Trifle! On the bottom of the jar, there is some jelly made with Pimm’s, strawberry & mint, then custard, then whipped cream. It was nice and light and very tasty, very cute looking as well!
最後に２人に来てもらったのは真冬の寒い時で、リノベーションはまだ始まっていない時だったので今回初めてリノベーション後の我が家のお披露目でした。まだまだ残っているので完成ではありませんが、見てもらえて良かった。
The last time when my brother-in-law and his wife came to our house was sometime in the middle of winter when it was really cold, and before the house renovations started, so this was the first time for them to see our house after the work had been done. It’s not all done yet but at least a half more more has been done and I’m glad they had a chance to see it finally.
