つい数ヶ月前まではたくさん小鳥が餌を食べていて毎日のように餌を補充していたのに、ある頃からほとんど見かけなくなりました。どうしたんだろうね、と夫と言っていたのですが、考えてみると１１月初めに家のリノベーションが再開したころだったような気がします。お庭に大工さんたちようのレンタルトイレが置いてあってそこに皆さん出入りされますし、クラフトルームからもそれなりに音が響いているので、そのせいでしょうか。竹の中などに見かけることは見かけるのですが、餌を食べに来ないのです。

Until a little while ago, we had lots of little birds coming to our feeders and we had to refill the feeders almost every day, but they sort of stopped coming maybe a few weeks ago, we feel it’s probably around the time when the house renovation re-started around early November.  There were 2 or 3 carpenters working in the garage/craft room, making some noise doing the renovation.  We did see some birds sitting in the bamboo bushes but they didn’t come out from there to get seeds from the feeder.

なのですが、昨日から何度か見かけるようになりました。そして、今日、これまで見かけなかった鳥が木の枝にたくさんいるのを発見。遠くですし目も悪いのですが、よく見かける鳥とは違うのはわかりました。双眼鏡で見てみると、尾が長くて黒く、顔は黒いのですが真ん中に白い帯のマークがあり、胸は白とピンクっぽい茶色っぽい色で、ぷくっとした小鳥。調べてみると、Long-Tailed Tit という鳥でした。日本にもいて、エナガと呼ばれるそうです。

裸の木の枝に虫がいるのかしばらく枝から枝に止まっていましたが、餌は食べに来ませんでした。

However, we saw quite a few birds yesterday and also today, including some that we hadn’t seen before this afternoon.  I saw quite a few little birds on the branches of a tree in our garden and they looked different from any others that I’d seen before.  When I looked at them with binoculars, they had long black tails, black face and a wide white band on their heads, white and pinkish brownish colour in their chests and looked quite fluffy and plump.  I looked them up on my bird book and found out they were long-tailed tits.  I guess there were some insects on the bare branches, they seemed to be eating something on them moving around but never came to the feeder.

最近までたくさん来ていたゴールドフィンチも戻ってきました。結構大勢でやってきますし、他の鳥に比べると結構長い時間フィーダーに止まって餌を食べます。赤、白、黒の頭と黄色い羽なのでよく目立ちます。しゅっとした精悍な感じ。

Goldfinches, which we used to see a lot of, also came back.  They usually come in a large flock and tend to stay at the feeder for much longer than other birds.  They have black, red and white heads and yellow winds so easy to identify for me.  Quite a sharp shape.

 

 

イギリスのクリスマスカードによく登場する、愛らしいロビン。遠くからでもこのオレンジ色のお腹が目立つのですぐわかります。以前はよくダイニングルームのすぐ外にあるお庭のテーブルにきていましたが、最近はほとんど竹のなかにいて、あまりこちらまで出てきません。でも、結構よく見かけます。時々フィーダーから餌をとることもありますが。竹の根元の虫を探していることが多いです。

We also see robins often in our garden, very easy to spot because of the orange chests.  They used to come to the table right outside our dining room but we haven’t seen them coming so close recently, they are staying in the bamboo bush digging in the soil there or sitting on a short branch, although we sometimes see them getting seeds from the feeder.

 

 

ハウス・スパロー（すずめ）も最近までよく見かけていました。

We used to see house sparrows, too, until a couple of months ago but haven’t seen them for a little while.

 

 

頭と羽が綺麗なブルーで胸が黄色い、ぷっくりした可愛いブルー・ティットも引っ越して来た頃よく見かけたのですが、最近はたまにしか見かけません。

We used to see blue tits often after we first moved in but then they stopped coming often although we do see them now and again.

 

 

よく似た形のグレイト・ティットも以前は結構見かけていましたが、最近見かけません。

Also great tits stopped coming often.

 

グレイト・スポッテッド・ウッドペッカー。数回見かけただけです、もっときて欲しいのですが。この写真では見えませんが、頭のところも赤いです。

We’ve seen great spotted woodpecker only a few times, I wish they came more often.

 

グリーンフィンチも数回見かけただけ。他のフィンチ類より少し大きい。

We’ve seen a greenfinch a few times, too.

 

 

ブラックバードは、頻繁にお庭にいます。

We see blackbirds very often.

 

 

スターリングという鳥も時々きます、大勢で来るのでちょっと怖い。芝生の上を餌を探しながらみんなで歩きます。

We see starlings, too.  They come in a large flock and walk on the lawn eating some insects.  I find them a little scary because there are a lot of them all at the same time.

 

 

マグパイ。初めて見た時は、すごく綺麗な鳥だと思ったのですが、結構大きいのでちょっと怖くもあります。とても頭が良いそうです。日本語ではカササギ、だそうで、名前は聞き覚えがあるものの実際に見かけたことはないように思います。

Apparently magpies are found in Japan, too, but I’ve never seen them there.  When I saw one in England for the first time I thought it was a beautiful looking bird but I also find them a little scary as they are quite large.  Apparently they are very intelligent.

 

 

歓迎できない鳩も結構きます。

Of course, unwelcome pigeons also visit our garden.

小鳥は可愛いと思うのですが、大きな鳥はちょっと怖いんですよね。フンも大きいのでお庭の家具が汚れるし、あまりきて欲しくないのですが。

I love little birds but not larger ones so much, I find them a bit scary and also they make a mess on our garden furniture.
