イギリスに引っ越してきた時、半年くらいしたらクラフトルームが出来るかな〜と、今から考えるとあり得ないことを考えていたのでカード作りの道具や材料は普通に他のものと一緒にパッキングしてもらいました。何しろ、５６０箱もあったのでその中から必要なものだけ出すのというのはほぼ不可能。クラフトルームに入れるものは最後までガレージに積み上げてあり、一度はある程度のものを出そうと試みたのですが、カード作りって案外たくさんの材料や道具が必要で（少ない材料と道具でも出来ますが、持っているとあれも必要、これも必要、ということになってしまいます）諦めました。その後、ガレージのリノベーションが始まったのが約１年後、その時は出来上がるまでガレージに置いていた箱はストレージの業者に来ていただいてどこかの保管庫に保管していて、やっとクラフトルームが完成して荷物を整理し終わったのは半年後の今年の夏頃だったでしょうか？

When we moved to England, I thought “Maybe I can have my craft room in a half year?”  and had all the craft stuff packed by the mover like everything else.  In the end they were stuck in the garage until we started having it converted.  If I’d known that it would take as long as a year and a half, I would have packed the things that I thought were necessary to make cards separately so I could do that on the dining table but I didn’t.  I did try once to get things I need from the boxes that were stacked in the garage but after spending 10 minutes or so I realised that it was impossible.  You need quite a lot of things to make cards.  You CAN make cards with not so much stuff but when you know what you can use it’s natural that you want more tools and materials.

なので、シンガポールで荷物をパッキングしてから１年半以上カード作りをしていなかったので、すっかりやる気が失せてしまっていました。やる気がないわけではなく作りたい気持ちはあるのですが、このカードを作ろう、という気持ちまで持って行けず、ただひたすら、YouTubeでのカード作りを見ていたのでした。作るようになったのは、クリスマスカードを作る時期になってから、というより、とっくに作って送っていなければ行けない時期になってから（笑）。やっと、最近、創作意欲が出てきたという感じです。

So, I didn’t do any card making for a year and a half or longer since we packed up in Singapore, during which time I seem to have lost my mojo completely.  Even though I felt I wanted to get back into making cards, I just kept watching youtube videos of card making because I didn’t seem to be able to decide which card to make.  It was only recently when I actually started to make cards – when I had to start doing our Christmas cards.  Well, actually it was much later than when I should have started, it’s been only a week or so since I began to feel my heart is in making cards again.

ところで、カードを作ったことがない方や、作っていても違うタイプのものしか作っていなければ１枚作るのにどれくらい時間がかかるかなど、多分わからないのだろうなと思いますが、どうでしょう。たまに、「あ〜、こういうカードは１０分くらいで出来ると思われてるんだな。」と認識させられることがあります。例えば、このカード、どれくらい時間がかかると思われるでしょう？

Incidentally, if you have never made cards or if you haven’t made this type of cards I wonder how long you think it’ll take me to make one of these.  I wonder this because now and again I have an opportunity to realise that most people think it takes me about 10 minutes to make a card like this.

 

 

これ、１枚だけ作るとしたら、多分１枚につき１時間半くらいかかるのではないかと思います。

結構、このような形で売られていて、ただ貼り付けるだけだと思っておられるようなのですが、そうではなく、１つ１つ切って貼って作っています。

I think many people think I would just use embossed paper and buy a girl with a Christmas ornament and stick it on top of each other and it’s done.  It’s not so.  It probably takes me an hour and a half to make this one card (if I’m not making multiple cards).

この１枚を作るために、これだけのパーツを切って組み立てる必要があります。それぞれの色の紙を選んで、ダイという切る型に合わせて紙を切って動かないように仮止め用のテープで止めて、機械で切って、糊で貼り付けながら組み立てて行きますが、切るのもほとんどのパーツが１度に１つしか切れませんので何度か同じ作業を繰り返してパーツを揃えなくてはいけません。そして、メッセージをまた別の機械でゴールドでフォイリングをして、他のパーツと共に組み立てて行きます。１つ１つのパーツがとても小さいので細かい作業ですし、例えばお花は２枚を重ねて真ん中の部分は別の色で切って貼り付けて、葉っぱも１つのお花に３枚切って（葉っぱは１度に２枚切れます）。タイツ（？）の模様も１つ１つ貼り付けて。

You need to choose paper for each part and make the many parts first – you can usually cut only one piece of one shape at one time (although some come with 2 or 3 same shape or a few shapes together).  Then you assemble each with glue one by one.  For example, to make a flower on the ornament, you need to cut 2 flowers, 1 small circule to go in the middle and 3 leaves – on different colour card stock.  You also need to use temporary tape to stick each die on each piece of paper so they don’t move when you put them through the machine.  Even the pattern on the girl’s tights is made in many parts.

 

組み立てが終わったら立体感を出すために裏側にフォームテープを貼り付けます、これも出来るだけ凹む部分がないように貼り付けるので細かく切って貼り付けます。

Once all is stuck together, you then need to put form tape on the back if you want dimension and. as you need to be careful not to have a large area without form tape, you need to cut it in so many pieces – this takes surprisingly a long time, too.

 

 

そして、白い紙にまた機械を使ってエンボスで模様をつけて、ベース用に切って折った紙に貼り付けてからこの女の子を貼り付けて、ツリーの飾りの部分にゴールドの糸を通して出来上がり。

Then you emboss white cardstock using a machine, put it on a base of cardstock that has been cut and folded, then you stick this girl on top and put thread through the ornament.

 

このカードの場合だと、クリスマツツリーをグリーンで１枚、シルバーで１枚、リボンは２つに別れていて、車は全体の赤い部分、白く細い線の部分、ブルーの窓の部分、黒いタイヤ、シルバーのタイヤの真ん中部分、バンパー、ドアの取って、黄色いヘッドライトとテイルライト、それぞれの色で切っては貼っていき、裏にまた３Dのテープを細かく切って出来るだけ全体に貼る、という作業になるのです。

Same for this card.  You need to cut 1 green tree, 1 silver tree, the ribbon is in 2 pieces, the whole car, white lined parts, blue windows, black wheels, silver circules, bumpers, door handle, yellow head light and tail light – they all need to be cut then assembled then 3D taped.

 

 

あるお友達のご主人が、手作りのカードなんて倹約しているみたいで恥ずかしいと仰ったのだそうですが、倹約どころか、材料費や道具も結構高価なだけではなく、作る時間も考えると買った方が断然安くつくと思います。でも、作る作業が楽しいですし、出来上がったときの満足感もあり、趣味にはよくあることですが、自己満足の世界、というわけです。

I’ve heard that a husband of a friend told her that he felt embarrased that they send out handmade cards because he was worried that people would think they were trying to save money.  On the contrary, materials and tools for card making are quite expensive and when you consider the time it takes to make them it’s much cheaper to buy them.  Besides, as they tend to be thicker and heavier, they cost so much more in postage to send out than store-bought cards.  The reason we make them is because we enjoy making them and also we love the results!   Like a lot of hobbies, it’s self-satisfaction, I suppose.
