Sunday Roast At Our Friends’

Our good friends invited us for lunch today,  They are always quite busy with grandchildren and other things and we  were also away for a holiday so we hadn’t seen them for more than 2 months.  The lunch was Roast Chicken with all the trimmings.

When my husband was a child I think most families in the UK had some kind of roast lunch (I should call it roast dinner) every Sunday, but I have a feeling that this isn’t the case any longer.  I imagine that the majority of families now cook a roast dinner just now and again.  A roast dinner seems easy because you just stick whatever you are going to cook in the oven and you don’t need to be looking after it all the time, but I find it quite a hard work because you do need to take out a tray of whatever and stir the vegetables or potatoes now and again – and I get hot doing that.  There are a lot of side dishes to cook, you need to make gravy and you have quite a lot to do just before serving as you want to serve everything nice and hot.  Then you have to wash the greasy oven trays.

So the husband wants roast every Sunday but the wife had told him no Sunday roast unless they have guests, so it was very special that they cooked a roast dinner today.  Roast chicken, pork sausages, roast carrots, roast parsnips, roast potatoes, boiled broccolis and even cauliflower cheese!   Everything was delicious!!

I’d told them I would be taking a dessert and took the Coconut & Mango cake but I’ll blog that separately.

After lunch, we chatted in their garden for a couple of hours, then my husband tried to solve a problem they were having with their computer and before we knew it was already evening.  Lovely lunch, lovely wine and lovely company – we had a wonderful day.
