今日は、朝から雨模様です。わたしたちが来て3週間以上になりますが、本格的な雨になったのは初めて。一度、夕方に短期間雷雨になりましたがわたしたちは室内にいましたし、先日城崎に宿泊した日の夜9時ごろにまとまった雨が降ったと聞いていますが、わたしたちはもうお部屋にいましたし、実際に降っているのを見るのは初めてです。朝早い時間に少し強めの雨が降ったと思いますが（まだベッドの中で聞いていました）、その後は止んだり小雨が降ったりという程度です。

It’s been raining today, the first time we’ve seen the rain since we arrived in Japan, which is more than 3 weeks ago. There was a bit of thunder and rain for a short time one afternoon but I was having a massage and my husband was relaxing in the apartment. I’m told it rained heavily around 9:00pm when we were in Kinosaki but we were in the room and didn’t know. I heard the rain early this morning when I was still in bed but after that it only rained very lightly now and again.

昨日は、最高気温は19度程度で城崎に行く前に比べると少し気温が下がっていましたが、それでも良いお天気で、軽めのウールのトップを着てウールのケープのようなものを手に持って出ましたが、結局ケープは使いませんでした。この時期、もう11月ですし、冷房が入っていないところがほとんどで入っていてもごくごく軽くなので、暑がりなわたしは夏服でなければ暑いです。

It was something like 19C max yesterday, which is cooler than the 3 weeks before we went to Kinosaki, but it was very sunny so it felt hotter. I was wearing a very light wool top and was carrying a woolen cape with me but I never needed the cape. It is already November so not many places have the air-con on and when they do it’s run very low so I get hot unless I wear something light.

昨日は、お友達お2人とランチをご一緒しました。長い長いお付き合いで、神戸に住んでいた頃に習っていた押し絵の先生とやはりグループで教えていただいていたパッチワークの先生、お2人とも、わたしよりも少しだけ先輩ですがお元気そうでした。結婚してあまり経っていなかったので、30年以上のお付き合い、ということになります。多分、34、５年のお付き合いです。

I had lunch with a couple of old friends today, it’s been so long since I met them first. They are the teacher of Oshie (Japanese craft that I used to do) and the teacher of patchwork, who used to teach a small group including myself. They are a little older than me but don’t seem to be very different after all these years (34 years or so).

ランチの場所は、いつも、「わからないからお任せします。」と言われてしまいます。わたし、神戸を出てもう25年くらいになるのでさっぱりわからないのですが、住んでいても出かけなければ事情は同じでしょうね。で、散々ネット検索をして、最終的に何年か前に同じメンバーでランチをした「Tooth Tooth Gardens」というカジュアルレストランに行きました。テラス席と中席があります。ネットで予約が出来るのが、パン食べ放題付きのセットランチだったので、それをいただきました。

I was left to decide which restaurant to go to for lunch with them. As I’ve been outside Kobe (and Japan) for 25 years I really don’t know much about what’s current here, but I suppose if they don’t go out much they aren’t in a much better position than me. So as usual I took time to research and made a booking at a cafe/restaurant “Tooth Tooth Gardens”. I’d had lunch with them here once before, many years ago. They have tables on their terrace as well as indoor. To be able to book a table we had to take their set lunch with all-you-can-eat bread.

前菜は3つから選べます、どれもわたしもいただけるものでした。お1人は、ひよこ豆のフムス、季節のお野菜とグレープフルーツ、ハーブサラダを選ばれ、わたしともうお1人は、えびすもち豚のロースハム、林檎と紫キャベツのマリネ。

You can choose one of 3 choices to start, and I could have had any of them (no fish or seafood). One friend had Hummus with vegetables, grapefruit and herbs, and the other friend and I had Pork (called Mochi-buta) Ham with Apple and Purple Cabbage.

メインは数種類の中から、お1人は神戸ポークベーコンと六甲マッシュルームのカルボナーラ、ポルチーニの香り、だったと思います。思いますというのは、写真が残っていず、正直、お喋りに夢中で見なかったのです（笑）。わたしともうお1人は、丹波鶏もも肉のロースト、無花果のキャラメリゼ添え。パスタも鶏肉も、300円プラス、でした。鶏肉はもうほんの少しお塩をして焼いてあればもっと皮がパリパリになって風味も良くなっていたと思います、かなり薄味でした。添えてあったバルサミコ酢の旨味でいただけましたが、わたしならひとつまみお塩を足します。

There were quite a few dishes to choose from for the main (but most of them with extra charge). One friend had Kobe Pork Bacon & Rokko Mushroom Carbonara with porcini aroma. The other friend and I had Roasted Tanba Chicken Thigh with caramelised figs. Both +300 yen. I found the chicken slightly under seasoned. With just a tiny pinch of salt on the skin the skin would have been crispier and the whole chicken thigh would have been more flavourful. As there was some balsamic vinegar I was able to enjoy the flavour enough, but I would have added a pinch of salt before roasting.

デザートは、わたしともうお1人はクレームブリュレ。もうお1人は507円プラスでケーキ。

For dessert, one friend and I had Crème Brûlée. The other friend had a pice of cake (+507 yen).

この後、コーヒーか紅茶がつきました。

Tea or coffee came after the dessert.

前菜を食べている時、まだ半分くらいの時にもうメインが運ばれて来て、びっくりしました。おしゃべりはしていましたが、わたしは食べるのは早い方、そんなにタラタラと食べていたわけではありません。海外では、まともなレストランではありり得ません。「まだ前菜いただいているんですけど。」と言っても、「それが？」という顔でテーブルに置いていかれました。すみません、の一言もなく。これまた、びっくり。それとも、これは日本では当たり前なのでしょうか。日本のサービスは素晴らしいと日頃思っているので、これは単にお国柄なのでしょうか。若いかたが好みそうなお店ではあるので、そういうことまで気を遣っていられない、ということなのかな。まぁ、お高くはないにしてもお安くもないそれなりのお店なのですが。3人で10150円、だったと思います。とても人気のカフェグループなので、サービス面は残念でした。食事は、普通に美味しくいただけました。

When we were having the starters, and were a half way through it, the main dishes came. The amount of the starter was very small as you can see and I am such a quick eater so we were not eating particularly slowly. I said, “We haven’t finished the starter.” They didn’t care. They said nothing and just put the plates on the table. This shocked me. I’m always proud of Japanese services to be the best, but this wasn’t great. I guess these restaurants are for younger people, who don’t care about things like that. Or is this accepted as a done thing in Japan now? Although it wasn’t expensive, it wasn’t cheap either for Japan. It was 10,150 yen (£54) for 3 of us, which sounds cheap in pounds but not in Japan, where you can have a reasonably good lunch set at £5. This is a very popular restaurant so it was a shame about the service. The food was fine – not special but good.

12時前に待ち合わせてから解散した4時半ごろまでの5時間弱（！）おしゃべりが絶えず、笑ったりしんみりしたりして、本当に楽しいひと時でした。お2人とも、もう海外旅行は無理とおっしゃっていてイギリスに来ていただけそうにないのがとても残念ですが、次回、日本に来る時までお互いに元気でいましょう。

We met around 11:40am and said good-bye around 4:30pm – we were talking non-stop almost 5 hours!! We laughed a lot together, which is great. They both say they couldn’t think of travelling abroad so it doesn’t look like there is a chance for them to visit me in England, so it’ll have to be when I come over here again to see them. Hopefully we’ll still be in good shape by then!
