今日は、夫の弟夫婦とランチをしました。White Horseでランチをして、近くの Winkworth Arboretum の中を散歩しようという義弟夫婦からの提案で、以前一度行ったことがある Hascombeというところにあるパブ、 White Horseでランチをしました。我が家と義弟夫婦の家の丁度間くらい、やや我が家に近い距離にあります、我が家から５０分くらい。

We had lunch with my husband’s younger brother and his wife for a catch up.  They suggested to have lunch at “The White Horse” at Hascombe, where we’d been to once before, and afterwards have a walk in “Winkworth Arboretum”, so we met at the pub for lunch.  It’s almost in the middle between our house and my brother-in-law’s but slightly closer to us, about 50 minutes drive.

 

夫と義弟は、ビーフとエールのパイ。まぁまぁ、だったみたいです。

My husband and his brother had Beef & Ale Pie, apparently it was so-so.

義妹は、フィッシュパイ。

My sister-in-law had Fish Pie.

わたしは、バターミルクチキンのバーガー。以前行った時もこれを食べて美味しかったと書いていたので。イギリスで食べるバターミルクチキンはほとんどが硬くてぱさぱさですが、ここは柔らかくて美味しいです。ただ、バンズもチキンもすごく大きくて、とてもではないですが、手で持ってかぶりつけません。日本で食べる倍はあります。そして、これは最近の流行りらしいのですが、バンズの内側がグリルで焼いてあり、その焦げ目の焦げ味が強いんです。ほとんどどこでバーガーを食べてもそうで、焼いて温まっているのは良いのですけど焦げ味はない方が良いのですが。。。それでも、固くて食べられないチキンを思えばずっと良いので、有り難くいただきました。チップスもとても美味しかったです。

I had a buttermilk chicken burger because I wrote that it was good when we were there last time (almost 2 years ago), I in general try to stick with what has been good so as not to order something that I cannot enjoy.  Most buttermilk chicken burgers I’ve had in England have been very tough and dry, and often even a bit gamy, but this one is very tender and good.  It is huge – both the chicken and the buns – so it’s impossible to eat with your hands, more than double the size of what you would get in Japan.  An even bigger problem for me is that the buns are grilled on a very high heat and the grill marks give a very strong burned taste, which interferes with the taste of the whole burger.  This seems to be ‘trendy’ at the moment and wherever you go you get these ‘burned grill marks’.  If they are grilled the right amount of doneness it does add a nice taste but not when you burn them.  Such a shame.  Still, this is one of the best buttermilk chicken burgers I’ve had in England so I should be grateful.  Chips were very good, too.

わたしのデザート、スティッキー・トフィー・プディング。トフィーソースは別添えにしていただいて、ほんの少しだけかけました。それでもかなり甘かったので（ソースをかけなければあまり甘くないものもありますが、ここのは甘かったです）、全部は食べきれず、３分の１くらいは夫が食べました。

Mine was Sticky Toffee Pudding.  I asked them to serve the sauce on the side and I used very little of it because it is very sweet.  even without the sauce it was very sweet for me (some sticky toffee puddings are quite light and not so sweet but this was on the heavy and sweet side) so I wasn’t able to finish it.  My husband had about 1/3 for me.

 

 

昨日はかなり強く雨が降っていましたが、今朝は陽がさして良いお天気でした。でも、残念ながらわたしたちが出発する頃から雲行きが怪しくなり途中少し霰が降り、パブについてしばらくすると雨が降り始めました。お天気予報を見ても丁度１時ごろから３時間ほど雨になる予報。そして、今日はかなり寒かったです。（ちなみに、前回行ったのは２年前の４月１日でしたが、その日も寒くて雪が降りました、多分今日と同じくらいの気温。）なので植物園を歩くのは諦めて、ゆっくりとランチをすることに。ということで、この後それぞれにコーヒーや紅茶をオーダーして、３時ごろまでゆっくりおしゃべりしました。内装もパブらしいパブでスタッフもとても感じが良かったです。お会計は、１組75ポンド（14300円）。３人はそれぞれビールなど最初にオーダーし、メインとデザート、食後のコーヒー紅茶もいただいたので、イギリスでは標準的な金額かな、と思います。

It rained very heavily yesterday but it was nice and sunny this morning.  However, just when we left home it started to get cloudy and we had some hail on our way.  A little after we got to the pub it started to rain, which we were expecting as the weather forecast showed rain from 1:00pm for 3 hours.  It was also quite cold today, so we decided not to go to the arboretum and to have a leisurely lunch instead so we ordered tea or coffee after the dessert and continued chatting until 3:00pm.  (When we went to the arboretum last time it was on the 1st April 2 years ago and it snowed, I think it was similar temperature as today.)  The interior of the pub is nice and traditional and  the staff was very friendly, it’s a nice pub.  The bill was £75 per couple.  3 of us had beer or non-alcoholic beer, we each had a main, a dessert and a tea/coffee so I would say it’s a standard amount.

義弟夫婦は来週末から１週間ホリデーに出かけますし、わたしたちは来月待つから２週間ホリデーに出かけるので、次回会えるのは４月末頃でしょうか。その頃には、お天気ももう少し良くなっていることと思います。

My brother-in-law and his wife are going away for a week next weekend and we are going away for 2 weeks from the end of next month, so I guess the next time we can get together is the end of April, by which time hopefully the weather will be nice.
