I’d like to write about our impressions of the part of Sri Lanka that we went to, illustrated with some photos that  I took from a tuk tuk.

スリランカについて、まとめたいと思います。

コロンボはお店に冷房が入っていたのでショッピングを楽しむことが出来ましたし、食べ物も思っていたよりも美味しくてほんの２泊でしたが結構楽しむことが出来ました。ゴールも素敵なところでしたしおしゃれな雑貨屋さんもあってショッピングも楽しいと思うのですが、とにかく暑くて困ったので（わたしだけではなく暑いのがそう苦手でもない夫も暑すぎるといっていました）、夕方気温が下がってからの散策が良いと思います。

We quite enjoyed our stay in Colombo.  Although I didn’t find many things that I wanted, it was fun to browse in the shops.  The places we went into had air conditioning so it was comfortable to do so.  Galle was also a very nice little place and there were some nice shops there but it was too hot to enjoy shopping or walking in town because they had no aircon in shops.  I recommend you to go there in the evening after 4.00pm, when it’s a lot cooler.

食事も全体的に思っていたよりも美味しかったです。もちろんレストランによるのでしょうが、わたしたちはホテルやおしゃれなカフェなどで食べたので地元の本当の美味しいお料理を食べる機会はありませんでしたがそれでもそれなりに楽しめました。（ビーチリゾートではまぁまぁ、コロンボのほうが美味しかったです。）

We found that the food was in general quite good, better than we had expected.  The food in Sri Lanka is supposed to be good at home but not in hotels.  We didn’t have any chance to have real local food in local restaurants or homes, but it was quite good even in hotels and  fashionable cafes.  Better in Colombo than in the beach resorts, though.

ビーチリゾートの方は残念ながらホテルが良くなく、お友達との時間は楽しかったですがホテルでの時間が長いだけにわたしたちにとっては結構苦痛な時間となってしまい、「家に早く帰りたい」モードでした。お友達と一緒に食事をしているときは気が紛れたのですが、特にクリスマスイブにホテルのレストランで２人で食事をしているとき夫はとても哀しそうで（クリスマスは大切な時期なので）かわいそうでした。お友達もこれまでタイで滞在したホテルに比べてやはり一番程度が低いとおっしゃっていました。（別々のホテルに滞在しました。）

The 2 beach resort hotels we stayed at were very disappointing.  Although it was wonderful to see our friends and when we were with them we were fine, it was depressing to be in the room back in the hotel.  We felt quite sad to be in the hotel’s restaurant just two of us specially on the Christmas Eve because it wasn’t the way we wanted to spend our Christmas holiday.

スリランカではホテルも外国人価格となり現地の方たちに比べて宿泊費が随分高くなり、その上税金も高いのでタイやバリ島など他の東南アジアに比べて高い上に質が良くありません。特にビーチリゾートでは少なくともわたしたちはビーチやプールサイドやお部屋のパティオで寛ぐのが目的なので、ホテルの質が悪いと何のためにわざわざ海外に行っているのかわかりません。シンガポールに住んでいれば常夏で寒さから逃れたい訳ではありませんし、大抵どこのコンド（マンション）にも素敵なプールがついていて（しかもわたしたちは使いません　笑）、これなら家にいる方が余程寛げるのにと悲しい気持ちでした。

In Sri Lanka, they charge a lot more to us non-locals and the tax is very high so you end up spending a lot of money on hotels, but the quality is quite low comparing to Thailand, Bali and other South East Asia resorts.  We live in Singapore, where it’s always hot, so we don’t need to get away from the cold.  We have a very nice pool in our condominium so we’d rather stay home than staying in not-very-nice-hotels at beaches.

わたしたちがシンガポールに戻ってからお友達ご家族は山の方に上がられてお茶の名産地のヌワラエリアやキャンディー、またシギリアなどに滞在されましたが、景色も良く食べ物も美味しいとメッセージがありました。

Our friend felt the same about their beach hotels but then they had a week tour to Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Sigirya after the beaches, and we had a message from them saying that the scenery is beautiful and food is good – they sounded much happier.

今回の旅行を決めるときにヌワラエリアやキャンディーに行かれた今週ご一緒することも考えたのですが、お友達が行き先を決められた時点では既にわたしたちが泊まりたいホテルはどこも満室になっていたこともあってビーチリゾートで合流することに決めたのです。ホテルのランクが下がっても、やはり今週ご一緒した方が楽しめたのだと思います。

When we were planning this holiday, I did think of joining our friends for the part of their trip in the mountains, but unfortunately all the hotels we wanted to stay at in those areas were fully booked by the time we knew the final plan.  I think we would have enjoyed the time much more if we didn’t stay at beach resorts.

景色が良かったり見るところがあればホテルが良くなくてもある程度我慢できますが、ビーチリゾートではそうもいきません。ウォータースポーツなどする方は別ですが、そうでなければリラックスできない環境では楽しめません。

If the scenery is good or you are out most of the time going to places the hotels don’t matter as much.  At beach resorts, what we do is to relax at the beach or at the pool or outside the room so when the hotels are not good we cannot have a good time.

ビーチリゾートで宿泊したホテルどちらも、スタッフはフレンドリーで問題ありませんでしたが、英語が通じにくい（マネージャーさんなどは問題ないのですが、レストランのスタッフなどはあまり英語ができません）こと、ホテルの建物自体が安っぽいこと、ホテルの部屋が狭かったこと、２つ目のホテルはバスルームがほぼ外なので床にアリなどがたくさんいること、目の前がビーチというビーチアクセスのお部屋をとりましたが、わたしたちの部屋のすぐ隣が掃除用具を収納するところになっていたので朝一番に大きな音がしたりスタッフがたむろしてタバコを吸っていたり常にだれかが近くにいて全くリラックスできなかったことなどとにかく値段に見合わないホテルでした。

The staff of the hotels were all very nice and friendly and helpful so that wasn’t a problem (though some staff had very little English, which can sometimes be frustrating).  However, we had a lot of problems with the rooms and the hotel facilities.  They were made very cheaply and the room was small so gave no feeling of being pampered.  The bathroom of the 2nd beach hotel was sort of outside (there were walls but a part of it didn’t have a ceiling) so you see lots of ants on the floor.  We had a room with direct beach access and the sea was right in front of us but there was almost always one of the staff standing around or smoking or being on the phone etc so we had no privacy on our patio.  It just wasn’t worth half the money we spent.  With the same amount of money we could stay in quite a luxuarious hotel in other South Asia countries.

夫と結婚して約２７年、休暇の最後に「やれやれ、これで家に帰れる」と思った休暇は今回が初めて。いつもは「もう少しいたいのに〜」と思うのに。。。

I usually say “I wish we had a few more days” at the end of our holidays but for the first time in my life I said “Thank God, we are going home!”

こんな風に書くとスリランカがすごく嫌だったように読めますが、スリランカの方たちはみなさんとても穏やかでフレンドリーで親切で素朴で感動しました。他の東南アジアの国と違いトゥクトゥクに乗ったときもぼられるのではとびくびくすることもなく、安心していられました。もちろん外国人価格ですがとんでもない値段を取られるのではという危険は感じませんでしたし、お金のための親切ではなく、本当の人柄の良さを感じました。あまりにみなさん優しいので、ホテルについてのクレームもしにくいと感じるくらい。なので、違ったシチュエーションならきっともっともっと楽しめたと思います。

It’s not that we didn’t like Sri Lanka.  On the contrary, we found people in Sri Lanka very gentle, friendly and kind.  Unlike some other places, I never felt they were being kind to us to get more money, they just are and it was refreshing to feel that way.   I never felt we need to be on guard so they won’t rip us off.  They do charge us more than they would local people but within the limit we felt it fair and we don’t mind giving some extra to a tuk tuk driver, for example, because they are working hard and a little extra can help him a lot.  If we were in different places in Sri Lanka, where we would be doing more sightseeing and spending less time in hotels, we would have had much nicer time.

ということで、スリランカにも素敵なビーチリゾートホテルのある地域があるのかもしれませんが、わたしたちの経験からは余程の高級ホテル以外、ビーチリゾートは避けたほうが良い、と思います。わたしたちは１泊US５５０ドル程度のところに宿伯しましたが、１泊２００ドル以下かと思うホテルでした。スリランカに行くならホテルにいる時間が短いスタイルで観光メインに、が良いと思います。

Of course there might be some beautiful beach resorts, too, but from our experience, I would say, unless you can stay at the very best hotels (we spent US$550 per night but they were more like, I would say, US$200 or less hotels), avoid beach resorts in Sri Lanka.  Go to the area where you would be spending most of the time sight-seeing.
