今日、シンガポールのお友達と日本の妹から小包が届きました！イギリスに住み始めて、初めて受け取った海外からの小包です。小包を出すのは結構面倒なのですよね、書類も面倒だし、色々聞かれるし。最近、どこも内容に厳しくなっていますし、イギリスは輸入税もひっかかると高いですし、何かと面倒。海外から来るイギリスの小包は大抵とあるエージェントが配達するようなのですが、多くの方がブログに最悪だと書かれていてトラブルが多いようなので心配でした、でも、どちらも無事に数日で届きました。有難い！
I received 2 parcels today – one from a good friend in Singapore and another from my sister in Japan. They are the first parcels that I’ve received since we moved to England. I know it’s not so simple to send a parcel to overseas, filling a form is quite tiresome and you get questions asked. Recently, the checking of parcels is getting more and more strict and there is a problem with import duty in England, too. It’s quite a pain actually. I’ve also read a lot of bad reviews of a particular deal for the delivery of such parcels from overseas in England so I was very worried if they would arrive safely, but they did arrive in good shape and in only a few days. I’m so thankful!
コロナウィルスが日本やシンガポールで広がり始めた頃、家族やお友達に必要なものがあれば送るから言ってね、マスクも今ならまだ買えると思う、と言っていたのですが、あれよあれよという間にこちらの方が状況が悪くなってしまいました。日本もシンガポールも比較的落ち着いていますね。正直、今の状態では日本やシンガポールに住んでいる方が断然安心だな、と思います。医療体制がしっかりしているので、もし重症になってしまったら治療していただけるのではないかという気がするのです。イギリスでは、もし重症になっても多分ほったらかしだと思います。実際、電話で助けを要請しても家で自力で治すように言われてほったらかされ、亡くなった方の話も読みました。夫婦のうち１人が具合が悪くなったら、家の中で隔離して家で養生するよう言われるようですが、隔離といっても病気の相手方をほぉっておくわけにはいかないですし。NHSの方達みなさん大奮闘してくださっていますが（本当に大変だと思います）、元々余裕がない医療体制で病気になってもすぐお医者様に診ていただけるわけではなく、場合によっては何ヶ月も待たなくてはいけないという体制ですから、このような状態になればパンクしてしまいますよね。普段ならプライベートで高額になることを覚悟すれば比較的早く診ていただけると思いますが（実際はわかりません、最近はプライベートでもウェイティングだと聞いたことがあります）、今の状態ではそれもだめでしょう。考え始めると、怖くてたまらなくなります。
When the coronavirus problem started in Japan and Singapore, it wasn’t a big threat here in the UK yet and I knew they were having problems with getting hold of things, so I was asking if they wanted me to send them anything. I even told them I could probably get hold of masks for them. However, it didn’t take long before it became a huge threat here too. To be honest I wish we were living in Japan or Singapore under such circumstances (I’m happy living here in many other aspects, just this one) because I would feel safer there. Their medical system is very strong and I feel if we became ill we would be looked after. Here, I think we would be left alone. I’ve read such cases, people left alone even though they called for help and died at home without getting any help at all. If one of us falls ill we are supposed to isolate one but how? We cannot leave one or the other like that. I know people in the NHS are all working harder than ever and I am very thankful but the system here is such that you cannot see a doctor when you want to at the best of the time, people have to wait for months sometimes to see a doctor. Now that we have such a significant problem, of course the system cannot cope. In a normal situation, I guess we can see a doctor relatively quickly if we pay a lot and see a private doctor (but even then I don’t know, I’ve heard that you need to wait for quite a long time to see even a private doctor), but I guess even that isn’t an option now. When I start thinking about it, it really scares me.
少し前に、シンガポールで親しくさせていただいていたお友達から「丁度お送りしたいものがあるので、必要なものがあればなんでもおっしゃってください、一緒にお送りしますよ。」とメッセージをいただき、お言葉に甘えさせていただき、消毒用のワイプを送っていただきました。こんなことになる前から探していたのですが探せず、手に入らないままこんなことに。シンガポールから持ってきたものが少しありましたがパリのホテルでテレビのリモコンやドアのハンドルなどを拭いたりしてもうなくなってしまったので、送っていただいて本当に助かりました。手に塗るジェルはまだありますし、石鹸で洗えば良いのですが、こういうワイプはどこにも見当たらなかったのです。（今はないと思いますが、以前は見つけられなかっただけかもしれません。）大好きなライチ烏龍茶と一緒に、こんなにたくさん送っていただきました。
A week or so ago, a good friend in Singapore messaged me saying she would be happy to send me whatever I need, she was going to send me something anyway so it wouldn’t be a trouble, which was very kind of her, so I did take up on her kindness and asked her if possible to send me some antibacterial wipes. Even before this coronavirus became problem, whenever I was in a supermarket I was trying to find this type of wipes but I wasn’t able to find any. Of course now there is no way. We still have hand gel but these wipes are very handy to use for cleaning door handles or table tops etc. I had some that we brought from Singapore but used most of them up in hotels in Paris wiping things like TV remote control, door handles, tables etc. She also sent me the lychee Oolong tea that I love.
妹からは、色々送ってもらいました。シンガポールの時もアマゾンやお店からオンラインで妹の家に送ってもらったりどこかで買ってもらったものをまとめて送ってもらっていましたが、イギリスは今回が初めてで大きな小包なのでこちらもとても心配でしたが、綺麗な状態で届きました。
My sister also sent me a box full of things. I often bought things on Amazon Japan and had them sent to my sister and also asked her to get a few things from here and there and then send all together a few times a year to me when we living in Singapore, but this was the first time to do this in England. I was quite worried if it’ll arrive safely without causing some problem at the customs, but it did.
この「保護フィルム」は、以前お友達に教えていただいて以来重宝しているものです。というのは、元々色々問題が多い肌ですが、今のように1日に数え切れないほどの回数手を洗ったり消毒ジェルを塗ったりしているので、手が大変なことになっています。わたしは保湿剤を一切使えない肌なので、緩和する方法がありません。ぱかっと割れてとても痛いのですが、この保護フィルムを貼ると痛みも収まり、傷も早くよくなります。いわゆるバンドエイドっぽいものですが、透明で薄い伸縮性のある素材になっていて、目立ちにくいですし、ぴったりくっつくので間から水が入りにくく傷が早く塞がるようです。こちらでも探してみましたが、見かけませんでした。これを使わなくてはいけない状態になると片手に何枚も使いますし、結構剥がれやすいのであっという間にたくさん使ってしまいます。なくなる前によくなると良いのですけど。
One of the things I asked her to get for me is these “protective films”. These are like Band Aid but clear, much thinner and slightly elastic. I’ve had problem with my skin for many years and often on my hands, but as I’ve been washing my hands countless times a day and using hand gel my hands are in a terrible state now with many open cracks that are very sore. My problem prevents me using any form of moisturisers and any other medical cream so there is nothing much I can do to reduce the discomfort. However, these films help the cracks to heal quicker and reduce the pain quite a lot. I tried to find something similar here but I haven’t found anything suitable. Once my hands are in this bad state I need to use these, and I need many of them on each hands because there are so many cracks and they come off from the edges in a day or so, so I use so many of them in a short time. I hope my hands will get better before I run out of them!
保護フィルムの向こう側は、以前お友達にいただいて以来気に入って何度かお取り寄せしている、和久傳の果椒。結構なお値段なのに、夫と二人であっという間に１本食べてしまいました。ここのれんこん餅も美味しいですよね〜。食べたい〜！要冷蔵で絶対送ってもらえないけど。
The thing next to them is from a famous Japanese sweet shop in Kyoto in Japan. It’s basically dried fruits and nuts stuck together like a bar of cake with some Japanese peppers (shansho), so good. It’s quite expensive but my husband and I finished the whole thing in 5 minutes…. This shop has all sorts of delicious things, I particularly love something called Renkon-mochi (lotus root mochi). They need to be refrigerated so I can never have it sent to England.
他にもわたしがリクエストしたお菓子や夫が好きなものなど色々詰めて送ってくれました。これは、ほんの一部。チェルシーは夫が大好きで、何かリクエストがあるか聞いたらチルシーが欲しいと（笑）。先日も書きましたが、最近、夫が餡子を食べたがるのでレトルトのおぜんざいも。（わたしは、おしるこの方が好きなので、おしるこも送ってもらいました。）
My sister sent me so many things in the box, not only what I bought but also some snacks and things that she bought for me. I asked my husband if he has anything he wants from Japan and he wanted these candies called ‘Chelsea’, kind of a hard candy with butterscotch flavour. He often says he wants to have sweet bean paste so I asked my sister to include some bean paste sweets, too.
ちなみに、左下のブルーとパープルのチェックの布は、花ふきんの大判のもの。日本には便利なもの、質が良いものなどが溢れていますが２０年も外国に住んでいるので知らないものがたくさんあります。これも、最近、偶然見つけて使ってみたらとても良くて感激したもの。いわゆる台ふきんのような小さめのものは以前から使っていましたが、これはもっと薄くてペラペラなのに洗い物の水分をススッと吸い取ってくれますし、薄いのですぐに乾いて衛生的。台ふきんのように乾いてもチリチリにならないので（あの、チリチリした感じが好きじゃないんですよね。。。）見た目も良いし、スッキリしたデザインで気に入っています。
The 2 sheets of cloth of blue and purple checks are Japanese dish cloth. There are so many great things in Japan but I think I don’t know many of them as I’ve lived out of the country for longer than 20 years. These are my recent discovery. They are made of special fabric called kaya, and have always been very popular in Japan. I have used smaller and thicker versions of these that you use for wiping table tops etc. I saw these online and ordered for the first time and they are brilliant. They come starched but once you wash them they become very soft. As you can see they look similar to cheese cloth, very roughly woven, they really don’t look like they would be good as a dish cloth but they soak up water so well. Also as they are so thin they dry quickly so are very hygienic.
基本的には洗い物はわたしがして、拭くのは夫がしてくれるのですが、夫にこの布巾（何度か使った状態でした）を渡したら、「なにこれ？ペラペラだけど、こんなので拭けるの？」というので、「それが、マジックみたいに水を吸ってくれるのよ、使ってみて〜。」と言ったあと使ってみて、「お〜、すごい！マジックみたい！」とやはり夫も気に入って、それ以来、マジック・クロスと呼んでいます（笑）。２枚しか持っていなかったので毎日は使えず、洗濯するからと他のクロスを渡すと「マジッククロスじゃないのか〜。」とがっかりし、毎回、マジッッククロスを使いたがる夫です。たくさん買ったので、毎日使えるかな（笑）。
In general, after a meal, I do the washing up (as I’m fussy about it) and my husband does the drying. One day, I passed one of these cloths to my husband (I’d used them a couple of times already). He said, “What is this? It’s so flimsy!” I said, “I know, it doesn’t look like they can dry anything, right? But it does, like a magic. Try it.” He tried it and was extremely surprised and said “Wow! It’s a magic cloth!” Since then he always wanted to use it and was very disappointed when they were in the wash. Now that I bought loads, he can use it every day!
ちなみに、ソーシャルディスタンスをとるように言われるようになってから、荷物を運んで来る方はドアの前に置かれ（ドアベルも押さない）、（わたしたちはベルが鳴らなくても人が前にたつとわかるシステムにしているので）こちらも離れたところからお礼を言ってデリバリーの方が離れてから荷物を家に入れます。お店のレジでも離れて立っています。それくらい、今は緊迫しています。
Incidentally, since the government announced to keep social distance, when we get a delivery like this, the person who delivers something will leave it in front of the door, they don’t even ring the bell – but we have a system that lets us know when someone is in front of our door – and when we go out we stand away from the delivery guy, thank him and when he leaves the door area we pick it up. We are taking it that seriously now.
