メンバーになっている刺繍の集まりでは夏に１回、クリスマス前に１回と年に２度、アフタヌーンティーの集まりがあります。前回の去年のクリスマスの前の集まりでは、アランデルのティーショップでアフタヌーンティーをいただきました。いつもは、去年のクリスマス前のようにどこかのティーショップなどで集まるようなのですが、今回、メンバーのお１人が「うちで集まりましょう。」と言ってくださり、持ち寄り（絶対持って行かなくてはいけないわけではなく、何か持って来てくださる方はお願いします、と少し前の集まりで聞かれ、数人が手を挙げました）で、ということになりました。
The embroidery group I belong to have an afternoon gathering twice a year, once before Christmas and once in the summer and there was a summer afternoon tea today. For the Christmas afternoon tea last year, we went to a tea shop in Arundel and apparently they always went to a tea shop for the afternoon tea gathering, but this time one of the members offered to have it at her house and a few of us volunteered to take things with us.
今日は生憎のお天気で、一日中、雨が降ったりやんだりを繰り返していました。多分、お天気が良ければお庭でいただいたのだと思いますが、そんなお天気だったのでダイニングルームでいただきました。現在メンバーは１８人いますが、今日出席できるのは１０人と聞いていて、当日のキャンセルが２名あり、全員で８人でした。
Sadly, the weather wasn’t very nice today, it was raining on and off all day. I guess if it were good weather we would have had it at her garden but we had it in her dining room because of the rain. There are 18 members and 10 were going to attend, but 2 cancelled on the day so there were 8 of us.
サンドイッチ６種類、スコーン、手作りのジャム、ラズベリーケーキ、ビクトリアスポンジ、フレッシュの苺、そしてわたしがお持ちしたマドレーヌと８人ではとても食べきれない量のサンドイッチとケーキ類が集まり、どれも美味しくいただきました。
We had 6 kinds of sandwiches, scones, homemade jam, raspberry cake, Victoria sponge, fresh strawberries and Madeleines (me) – much more food than 8 of us could manage to demolish so we all took some home. They were all very nice.

素敵なお庭やクラフトルーム（別棟になっていて、わたしのクラフトルームの４、５倍の広々とした素敵なお部屋でした）を見せていただき、美味しいサンドイッチやケーキをいただき、おしゃべりもゆっくりとしてとても楽しい午後のひとときでした。いつもの集まりでも刺繍をしながら少しはおしゃべりをしますが、普段出ない話題もたくさん出て、ティールームなどで集まるよりもやはりみなさんがリラックス出来、お互いの距離が少し縮まったような気がしました。みなさん多才で、お料理をお仕事にされていた方もおられ、それぞれに経験豊富で興味深いお話がたくさん出て来ました。
We were shown her beautiful garden and a huge craft room (4 or 5 times bigger than mine as it’s in a separate building with a very high ceiling), had sandwiches and cakes and enjoyed chatting together and had a lovely afternoon. Although we chat when we get together for embroideries, it’s not in the same way as today, a lot of topics that hadn’t come up came up. Also it felt more relaxing and I suppose a little more intimate than gathering in a tea shop. They are all very talented and interesting people, some of them cooked as jobs in the past and a lot of interesting conversations were held.
正直なところ、集まりには結構参加しているものの、まだ数人のお名前しか覚えていませんし、お友達と言える距離ではないのでこう言う集まりは少し緊張するのですが、こんな風に大人数で集まる機会はイギリスに来てからなかったので、ちょっと昔（香港やシンガポールで大勢のお友達と集まったあれこれ）を思い出したりもしました。良い機会だったと思います。
To be honest, I only remember a few people’s names although I have attended quite a lot of gatherings, I don’t feel I can call them ‘friends’ yet, but I feel we probably got a little closer than before this afternoon tea gathering. It also reminded me of the many gatherings I had with my friends in Hong Kong and Singapore as I had never had such a gathering since we moved to England, it was fun.
