今日も引き続き、借りているマンションでゆっくりしています。風邪は昨日と同じか少しよくなったような気がするので、たいしたことなく終わってくれるかな、と思っています。たまに、最初は鼻風邪程度なのにじわじわゆっくりと悪くなることがあるので油断出来ませんが。
We are continuing to take it easy today without doing much. My cold seems slightly better than yesterday so I’m hoping it’s on its way out. Sometimes it starts with mild symptoms but very slowly gets worse and worse, hopefully this isn’t going to be one of those.
香港2泊、関空1泊してきたのでもう結構洗濯物が溜まっていたので、今朝はお洗濯をしました。借りているマンションでは最低限のものしか揃えられていないので例えばTシャツを干すにも干し竿にかけて干すしかなくちょっと不便ですが、なんとか全部干せました。
As we stayed in Hong Kong for two nights, then had one night at the airport this side, we already had quite a lot of washing so we did washing this morning, figuring out how to use the washing machine. The apartment we are renting has only the minimum things so it was a bit of a pain to hang everything for drying, but we managed.
わたしたちが日本に住んでいた頃は海外赴任者用のマンションに住んでいたので家電製品はどれもアメリカ製のもので、洗濯機もただ蓋を開けて洗濯物を放りこんで、洗濯洗剤や漂白剤や柔軟剤を入れてオンにするだけ、だったのですが、今は日本の家電は進化していて、お洗濯をするだけでもあれこれトライしてやっとでした（笑）。でも、このマンションの家電は声では教えてくれないのでそれほど最新のものではないということだと思います。
When we lived in Japan, we lived in a apartment built for expatriates so the washing machine was from the US and very simple, you open the lid, chuck in the washing, put some detergent, softener and turn it on. Japanese household machines have come so far and can be a bit complicated, it took us a while to work it out pushing all sorts of buttons! The latest household machines here usually talk to you, too, but the ones in this apartment don’t so I guess they aren’t the latest versions.
お洗濯が終わってから、近所のパン屋さんにお昼に食べるサンドイッチやお惣菜パンを買いに行きました。先日アップしたパン屋さんは昔懐かしい感じのパン屋さん、こちらはもう少し今風というのでしょうか。ハード系のパンも置かれていますが、主に柔らかい日本のパンのようでした。自然酵母のパンと書かれていました。
After we finished washing, we went out to a bakery to get some sandwiches etc for lunch, we’d been to one other baker nearby but this is a different one, still within a few minutes’ walk. The other baker was quite a traditional old-fashion type (but very good and very popular) but this one is more modern and uses natural yeast. We got there just after noon so a lot had already been sold but it looked like their bread is mainly typical Japanese style, which is soft and fluffy, although they did have some hard bread as well.
どれもこれも美味しそうで、日本でパン屋さんに行くとついつい買い過ぎてしまいます。こんなに買ってしまいました。余ったのは、甘い系（シナモンバンズ）も買ったので、おやつか、明日のランチにでもいただきます。
They all looked so good that we bought so many. Whenever I come back to Japan and go to a bakery I just cannot help buying too much. One was a cinnammon bun so we’ll have it with tea later, and we’ll have tomorrow whatever we didn’t finish.
この後、小さなチャバタも食べました。どれもフレッシュでとても美味しかったです。
After this, we also shared a small Ciabatta – they were all very fresh and delicious.
日本のパンはふわふわで少し甘味もあって独特で欧米の方には余り好まない方もおられ、それはそれでわかります。そして、お惣菜パンのようなものはイギリスにはないような気がします。実はわたしも日本にいた時はそれほどお惣菜系のパンは食べていませんでした、当時は余りコンビニで食べ物を買うこともなかったような気がします。でも、今では、日本に帰って来るとお惣菜系のパンが食べたくなります。食事と一緒にいただくときはハード系のシンプルなパンが好きですが、今は日本でも結構ハード系も手に入りやすくなりましたね。こちらのチャバタも美味しかったです。借りているマンションから数分のところに2軒もおいしいパン屋さんがあるのはとても有難い。この、パン屋さんの文化はイギリスにはなくて残念です。パン屋さんって単価が安いのに大変なお仕事なので、いつも有難いなと思います。
Typical Japanese bread is soft, fluffy and slightly sweet, very different from what I know from the UK or other western countries, and I can understand why some western people don’t like it. To be honest, I didn’t used to eat these type of bread when we lived in Japan but now I really enjoy them. There are all sorts what we call something like “savory meal bread”, which you eat as a meal rather than with a meal and they are delicious. I do prefer simple firmer bread like baguette or ciabatta etc to have at a meal and these days many Japanese bakeries also bake such types and they are delicious, too. It’s great that we have two good bakeries within a few minutes’ walk, I don’t think this happens in England. I always feel thankful that these bakeries work hard and serve such great bread at such low prices as I know it’s a hard work getting up early etc.
