最初に書く美容院については長くなります、良い機会なので書いてみましたが、興味のない方は飛ばしてください。

今回、日本に1ヶ月滞在するので髪の根元を1度も染めずには済まないので、今日の午前中に美容院に行ってきました。コロナ前にもわたしだけ長く滞在する時に染めてもらっていたことはありましたが西宮の美容室に行っていたので、今回は三宮で初めて。ネット検索するとすごい数の美容院がヒットするので、もう、エイッという感じで最初の方に出てきたところに決めてしまいました。すごくスタイリッシュなところは美容師さんが怖くて（笑）苦手なのですが、こぢんまりとしたところで、担当の方も優しくて良かったです。

As we are in Japan for a month, I needed to have my hair roots coloured here so I went to a hair salon this morning. Before the pandemic when I was here alone for a long time, I have had my hair coloured a few times but I was staying in Nishinomiya then so I had it done there; this was the first time that I went to a salon in Kobe. When I searched online there were so many hair salons that came up, in the end, I just had to choose without any particular reason, I chose the one that I saw in the beginning of a long list. I feel intimidated by hairdressers who seem over confident and very stylish but the one I went to was a little place and the hair dresser in charge of me was a very nice lady.

それにしても日本の美容院とイギリスの（というよりも、多分ほとんどの海外の）美容院の違いは凄いです。わたしたちが住んでいた頃の美容院と比べてもそうですが、さらに心地よく改善されていて、反対にイギリスの美容院は多分何十年も変わっていないんだろうな、と思います。

The difference between hair salons in Japan and in England (or is it outside Japan?) is just unbelievable. Even comparing to the way they were 30 years ago when we were living in Kobe it’s huge but now Japanese hair salons have come a long way whereas those in England, I wonder, haven’t changed much in the last 30 years.

まず、シャンプー台がイギリスは辛い。座ったまま全然シートが動かないところも多くて、わたしが行っているところは少しだけ前にスライドしますが、それでもほとんど首を後ろに倒すだけで首には冷たい陶器が当たりますし、椅子は上下もしないので一般的なイギリス人に比べて背が低いわたしが座って首の位置がちょうど良い訳もなく、ちょっとしたクッションのようなものを敷いてくれますが、まだ足りません。

First of all, the shampoo chairs are totally different. The ones in Japan are more comfortable than those in dentists, the whole chair moves on its own to almost a bed and it’s really nicely cushioned. Your head is supported from underneath, not just your neck by a cold ceramic thing, the whole head is supported. The hair dresser would do everything, you don’t lift your head up or to the side, just lie there and enjoy it until it’s finished. It is so comfortable and relaxing.

そして、準備。カラー剤がなるべく悪影響を与えないように日本では地肌に何かスプレーしてくれますし、カラー剤自体にカラー剤の悪影響を緩和するものを加えてあると聞いています、イギリスがどうなのか聞いたことはありませんが、多分カラー剤だけではないでしょうか。カラー剤を塗る前にイギリスでは顔周りにクリームも塗らないですし、耳カバーもしません、なので耳も顔周りも黒くなります。首回りに置くタオルも形だけ置いてあってなんのプロテクションにもなっていません。シャンプーが終わると着させられているビニールっぽい素材の上着を通して水が染みて、首から背中がピチャピチャで寒い。

The preparation for colouring is so different, too. In Japan they spray something on your scalp so it’s protected. I’ve also been told that they add moisturiser and something else to the colouring cream itself to reduce the bad effects. They put cream around the edge of your face and put ear covers on your ears to protect from the colouring cream. When I come out of my hair salon in England, all around my face along my hair line is black, so are my ears. That doesn’t happen here. They also protect your neck and back with a towel really well. In England, even though they put a towel on my shoulder it just sits there without protecting anything and when they finish shampooing my hair, my neck and the back is wet from water because it goes through the plasticky jacket you wear.

カラー剤の塗り方もシャンプーの仕方も、日本ではとても丁寧。イギリスより少し時間がかかりますが、終わるとカラー剤はしっかり落ちています。イギリスではちゃんと落とせていないので、頭を触ると指先が真っ黒（わたしは黒く染めているので）になります。そしてシャンプー中には必ず耳にも水をかけられて、先日はシャワーをジャーと耳にかけられました。びっくりします。一応、マッサージしましょうかと言われお願いするとしてくれますが、特にマッサージの指導を受けているわけではなくて適当に手を動かしている感じで、1、2分で終わります。

The way they put on the colouring cream and also the way to shampoo is quite different, too. Here they take time and make sure every millimetre of your scalp is covered by the colouring cream and then rinse off. It takes a little more time here but my finger tips don’t get black from the stuff when I touch my head. They take every care not to put any water in your ears whereas in England every time when I go to a hair salon they put water all over my ears and I can never relax. The massage you get here is just so nice, they get trained for giving massage as well.

行っている美容院の担当の若い男性はとても良い方でなんの不満もありません、ただ、イギリスの美容院全体がそういうレベルなので、もう少し向上してほしいな、とは思います。ですが、イギリスの人はずっとそういうサービスを受けているので何の不満もないのでしょうね。ロンドンには日本の設備の日本の美容師さんが働いている美容院がたくさんあるので、羨ましい。引っ越してすぐは2度ほどロンドンでしてもらっていましたが、ずっとというわけにはいかず、コロナのロックダウンが明けてからは住んでいるところの近くに行くようになりました。

I don’t have any complaints to the young male hair dresser I get in England, he is a really nice guy and I feel comfortable with him. However, I do wish the whole hairdressing industry improved a little so the customers are more comfortable. I guess if this is all you’ve had all your life, you don’t have any problem but the experience can be a lot more pleasant. In London there are many hair salons that have Japanese equipment and Japanese stylists, I wish I could go there but it’s really too far for me to go every time so I gave up after the pandemic.

お値段は、日本の方が安かったです。こちらでは9000円弱でした。イギリスでは16700円払っています。まぁ、美容院はどの美容院かによって全然お値段が違うので一概に比べられませんが、イギリスで行っているのはどちらかというと高めのチェーンですが、それほど特別なところではありません。

It was much less expensive in Japan by the way. I paid about 9,000 yen, which is £49. In England I pay £92!! It is difficult to compare because there is a huge difference between salons, but the one I went to today is not a cheap place, I would say middle-of-the-range. The one in England is a chain salon, nothing special, although I guess it’s not a cheap place.

ちょうどお昼頃に終わるように予約を入れていたので、コーヒーを飲んだりして待ってくれていた夫とついでにランチをしました。

I made my appointment with the hair salon so I’d be done around lunch time, so my husband was waiting for me having coffee and having a little walk around the place so we could have lunch together before coming back to the apartment.

三宮と元町辺りだけに限っても飲食店は数えられないくらいあって、ネットで調べてもどこに行けばよいのかわからない、というのが本当のところです。まぁ、日本は、それほど美味しくないところはないとは思っていますが、どうせなら美味しいものを食べたいし。ちょっとだけ調べて、元町の「トマト座」という昼間はパスタだけ、夜はピッツァやリゾットや他にも色々といただけるイタリアンに行きました。小さな路地にあって前を通りかかる、という場所ではないのですが、わたしたちが着いた1時15分くらい前には6人（後で合流された方もおられたので実際には9人、かな？）待っておられました。多分、30分くらい待ったでしょうか。

Even just near Sannomiya and Motomachi, there are uncountable places to eat so it’s quite confusing to search online, but I do want to eat something good rather than something just so-so, so I did do a little search and decided to go to an Italian restaurant, “Tomato-za”. They serve just pasta at lunch time and serve other dishes like risotto, pizza and others in the evening. It’s in a little ally off the main area, not where many people would walk past and go in, but there were 6 people (other people joined them so I think there were 9) queueing outside the restaurant already when we got there around 12:45. I guess we waited for about 30 minutes before we could get in.

2人用のテーブルが6つ、カウンター席が3つの小さな店内で、お料理はシェフがお1人、サービスは女性がお1人でされていました。こういうお店は、日本には本当にたくさんありますが、イギリスではほとんど見かけません。

It has only 6 tables for 2, plus 3 counter seats, very small. In the kitchen there was a chef, nobody else and a lady was serving. There are thousands of small places like this in Japan but I don’t think we see many like this in England.

わたしは、豚肉と茄子とバジルのトマトソース（生パスタ）。美味しい！本当に美味しい！店内に入ってからも結構待ちましたが、待った甲斐がありました。もう1皿食べたかったです。こんなに美味しいパスタが日本では多分たくさんのレストランで食べられるんでしょうね〜。1つで良いから、こんなお店が近くに欲しい。

I had Pork, Aubergine & Basil with Tomato Sauce (Fresh Pasta). Delicious! So good! We waited for a while after we got inside as well, but it was definitely worth the wait. I would have liked to have another plate! I guess there are many many places like this, where you can get perfectly cooked delicous pasta in Japan, I am so envious. I wish there was just one place like this near our house.

夫は、スパゲティー・ボロネーゼ。これも、美味しかったと言っていました。

My husband had Spaghetti Bolognaise, which he also enjoyed.

今日は、夜、焼肉に行くので単品でパスタだけオーダーしました。1,000円ずつで、2,000円でした。安すぎる！

As we are going out for Korean BBQ for dinner, we just had a plate of pasta each. 1,000 yen each so 2,000 yen in total (£11). Too cheap!

マンションに戻ってから、すぐ隣にあるサロンでマッサージをしていただきました。シンガポールではよくコンドに来てくれるマッサージ師さんに来ていただいていましたが、イギリスに行ってからマッサージをしていただく機会がなく久しぶりでした。相当こっていたらしく、「凄いですね、辛かったでしょう」と感心されました。もう、麻痺しているのか、辛いとは言わないですが、確かにいつもこってはいます。

After we got back to the apartment, I had massage done – there is a massage salon next to the building we are staying in and I’ve been wanting to have it done since we arrived. I used to have someone come to our apartment for massage when we lived in Singapore but I haven’t had it done since we moved to England. It was great – quite painful but at the same time it felt good. The masseuse told me that my body is full of knots. I know…
